  • For people who don't get it, a K-Tool is a wedge kind of tool (just google it for an image). They slide it on the lock, hammer it tight, then use a bar to wiggle/rip the lock off.

The reason they do it is because they either can't break the glass or it's dangerous to break the glass.

  • Break the glass you fools!

  • I didnt really understand :(

  • Damn I like this song. It fits good. Great vids as always.

  • You guys make some damn good videos. As a man who just passed FF1, I don't get much of a chance to force doors, but you guys have brought me pretty close to seeing the real thing.

  • Good video too, by the way!

  • I generally can't stand the use of music in training or fire videos, because it's usually something impossibly corny or stupid, or it's Creed. The use of this song was clever and by a good band! Huzzah!

  • RBFilmnut,

You are exactly right on all points. Breaking the glass should be the last option on storefront doors.

After breaking the glass, you MUST take time to remove cross-bar and clean out glass shards around frame so your hose line does not burst. This will take two, three or four times longer than if you had just pulled the cylinder in the first place.

Initially breaking the glass is what unprofessional and untrained firefighters do that are not trained in through-the-lock techniques.

  • Additionally, many storefront doors are no longer made of tempered glass. They are now plexi-glass, lexan and other plastic products. They will not break! Through-the-lock will be much faster in those cases as well.

We have a drill posted on our website's "Online Drills" area that covers this topic in-depth with several side-by-side comparison videos. Feel free to check them out and let us know what you think.

    Stay safe!

  • Pretty Cool video. This also is a better method if your department is concerned with PR. (Which they should be) in your community. Kudos!

  • cripster and redneck, once you break the glass you have lost an option of closing off that room if you have to, for example, the room flashes over' Also, break the glass and how are your firefighters and civilians gonna get through all that broken glass, the crash bar, and such...you've gotta take the time to clear the whole frame, and there's still gonna be glass on the ground to cut your hose lines. Through the lock is better, safer, and just as fast if not faster.

  • Nice use of the tools. On not advancing...just remember, fight fires and save lives. If you can't do one, do the other. not going interior just because you "think" there isn't anyone inside is just gay. That's what you get paid for so start fighting fire agressively or work on an ambulance...

  • ok i hat to say but if theres a burning bulinding you all stupid if ur gonna pic a lock to get in

  • 90 Percent of Fire Calls arent actual fires, Merely activated alarms, Thats why this comes into effect. If there was a fire, and no one inside we wouldn't advance inside at all.

  • Thats why companies either need to supply Knox boxes or be at our mercy when we come. If we need to make entry we need to make entry, how do you know its not a fire that you cant see immediatly on arrival or that there isnt an emergency? Also not entering because you think "no one is home" isnt cool. What happens if you forgot little billy was still inside cause he went to bed early? You still need to make a search of the building anyways.

  • "ok i hat to say it but" your a douche bag!

  • Hello, the video is okay, but it would be much better if you takt the cam to an other position. The music is very good. Who is singing this? And the title? Best regards from Germany
