he's totally mimicking the voices of the construction workers too, thats phenomenal. and i also noticed how he can do two sounds at once. like when he mimicks the kookaburras, hehe. he seems to like those
We have just been camping in Barrington Tops. There were lyrebirds everywhere. They had a very wide range of sounds, mostly other birds as it's a wilderness area. One morning at about 5:30 I heard one go through his entire repertoire and their vocal skills are astounding. I also heard one doing a car alarm and lots of kookaburra.
Wow and I thought human girls were demanding : P These birds have to imitate all these sounds AND flash their feathers to get a date lol. Amazing vid.
(Continued from below) near his pet lyrebird. The lyrebird retained the tunes after it's release into the park. Neville Fenton forwarded a tape of his recording to Norman Robinson. Because a lyrebird is able to carry two tunes at the same time, Robinson filtered out one of the tunes and put it on the phonograph for the purposes of analysis. The song represents a modified version of two popular tunes in the 1930s: "The Keel Row" and "Mosquito's Dance".
@freeradicals, the following was quoted from Wikipedia's page on the Lyre Bird, and I'm sure if you do a little searching you'll be able to find the actual recording.
"Similarly, in 1969, a park ranger, Neville Fenton, recorded a lyrebird song which resembled flute sounds in the New England National Park, near Dorrigo in northern coastal New South Wales. After much detective work by Fenton, it was discovered that in the 1930s, a flute player living on a farm adjoining the park used to play tun
@SockMonsters Apparently the voice box of the Lyrebird is so advanced it can mimic two sounds at the same time (you can hear that occasionally in this video). I read somewhere that a Lyrebird had been recorded reproducing two flute tunes at the same time - the recording engineers had to do some sort of phase shift on the sound to separate the two songs!. Haven't been able to find it on the web tho, so it's just hearsay for now.
Bless you Chook. You are the most amazing bird that ever lived and i love your videos. I hope animals go to heaven so I can meet you one day in person
R.I.P. Chook. You singularly brought positive world wide attention to your species and achieved more in your 32 years than most humans manage in their lifetime...
@GilaTomster You'll be pleased to know that the Superb lyrebird is not endangered and is common in forests along the Australian east coast from southern Queensland down through Victoria reaching right into bush-fringing suburbs of large cities. Both it and Albert's lyrebird (which is listed as "vulnerable") are protected under Australian law. They are fantastic birds. Coming across a Superb male displaying in the bush is something I'll never forget.
RIP Chook. That's some awesome sounds. Pity he never copied the tradies themselves with a couple of "awww, f*ck it!" calls but great sounds all the same!!!
chook was talented had a gift like no other he could laugh like a kookabura (haohaohaohaohaoo) he could make a saw sound (zipzipzipzipzipziP) rest in peace chook for we all miss! :(
@ChristRegeneration Definitely a classic example of evolution at work - the better male mimic gets all the girls, fathers all the babies, produces a batch of even better mimics. Simple really :)
What a fantastic bird. We recognised the sound of the different particular drill techniques, possibly drilling holes for dynabolts in concrete and a saw. RIP Chook and thanks for delighting so many people and showing us the abilities of your species.
Extraordinary! He's imitating human speech as well as Rainbow Lorikeets, Kookaburras, drills, people whistling, vehicles starting up... this demonstrates an amazing memory along with the ability to mimic the sounds so expertly. So much for "bird brains" - birds are extremely intelligent.
