Actually they are pronouncing an R sound, my temperamental Italian friend. What they're saying is "Furedi" and not Fleddie. Indeed, from what little I've read about the Japanese language, it seems to lack an L sound, so they'd probably have a hard time saying Fleddie.

The reason they say "Furedi" is because they "Japanize" it, which means they take the name and type it the way its prononounced in japanese. フ(Fu)レ(Re)ヂ(Di), フレヂ, Furedi. It makes it easier for the japanese people to pronounce it, since they dont have the "Fr" sound in their vocabulary.
When theres are two consonants (in this case Fr) they usually go with the kana of the same consonant plus U, so you get Fu. All kana are syllables, so the rest of the name goes fairly well. Furedi, which as opposed to what some people said is spelled フレディ, and not フレヂ.
