I live in the Antelope Valley, high desert area you are referencing. A lot of strip malls they were building, as soon as the "recession" started, everything stopped. All construction, now for lease signs and unfinished construction everywhere. You are right about the jobs out here as well. The only major industry out here is the Aerospace/Defense. Not much for other manufacturing.

Driving down Bear Valley Rd there. I been to that home depot a ton for my brother. He bought his house few months ago for 120k and it foreclosed on for 300k. Needed minimal work and has a total of 7 garages (5 are a detached work shop with 2 car attached). Off of main street I just looked at a rental house possibility for 35k. 3 bedroom house for 35k! That same home I looked at up there was bought in 1982 for 45k lol. That area is toast.
