well.. that was really helpful and i really appreciate it. BUT what strategy did u use at the test? the test is all about techniques and getting over traps more than being good in math or english to some extent!.. so what did u do?
Hi. I'm taking a GMAT in 3 weeks and I'm looking for some extra practice tests. Can you tell me what web site you used to buy 20 tests for $8? Many thanks
BenWannabee mentioned that he bought 20 practice test for $8. Where can you purchase these GMAT practices exams? I have had trouble finding many. Thanks.
GMAT is lame. Seriously, I need to remember Geometry for business school? I had to write an essay about dinosaurs? I had to pay to take that garbage? Who wrote that crap? I was well below the average, but still got in a well-known MBA program and got excellent grades. It's a complete flaw of a test.
@Creuzillion I scored a 640 on my "official" test, which is what I needed for my MBA program of choice. However, I only studied for 2-3 weeks. Since then (working with the GMAT Coach to refine and improve their teaching methods, I've gone above a 700.
I had no time to study for the GMAT. I was in an engineering management master's program, and decided to go for a concurrent MBA. I decided to do so in October, and had to take the GMAT in December. Worse, I was in school and I had final exams. So all I did was take the two practice tests that you get when you register to take the tests. That's it. I also got a 640 (76th percentile). Had I had some time to study, and I would have really killed the test.
Hey, I will be taking the GMAT and the GRE and the prep course that I took helped a little but not as much. How many tries did it take you to score the well? I am extremely nervous !!! Any last minute advice...
@shopgirlforeva I took a practice test and didn't do so well so I realized I needed to study. Went with "The Gmat Coach" and increased my score a bunch in a few weeks. Def the route to take.
I study for 4 hours on weekdays (cannot study more because of work) and about for 7 hours on weekends. But I'm just dumb with Math, and English isn't my first language. Gosh, I hope I'll pass this thing with a normal score.. =\
I'm glad you did well on the test. I also self-studied and ended up with a 750. My biggest problem was the quant section but a three month self-study led to a 200 point increase. The verbal section was pretty easy.
Why do people feel the need to get into Wharton or Harvard? A 640 will get you into plenty of really good schools. I'm with ole boy in the vid. If I get a 640, I'll the happiest motherfucker this side of the Mississippi. BTW, my diagnostic test was a 490.. yikes. I got some work to do. Dude in the vid is hella laid back...lol. That's how you gotta be during the test.
@emnekoc haha I bet! US math education is horrific. I would read read and read some more, concentrating on what the author is trying to get across. Also study grammer rules
@emnekoc The GMAT's math is presented in a way that tries to confuse and belittle test-takers, so being "good" in math doesn't necessarily mean you will do well on the test. As far as verbal goes, the BEST advice is to follow a proven prep program. If you can't do that, then get a grammar book and study the "rules" of the English language. Also, read read read!
Thank you so much dude! it is really so nice and thoughtful to hear from someone like you and i truly appreciate your dedication. why dont you email me at sivsrinivas2005@yahoo.co.in. I have my exam on 24th june 2010

The maths part, I personally found REALLY difficult, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people feel the same way too. Verbal you can study by yourself, but Maths, if you can, get help!!

Why do so many people who take the GMAT have an undergrad degree in another field than business? My friend who went to a very good school, told me that it's just a review of the business stuff you learned as an undergrad in a different setting.
My point is basically, how could 1-2 years of an MBA, replace 4 years of an undergrad degree in business. I took way more business classes than what is required during the MBA. That's why I don't know if the MBA is for people with a B.S. in business
Believe it or not, the main purpose of business school is networking. can you explain this a little more??? im really confused about whether or not i should attend graduate school.....and i certainly dont have the money to attend a top 25 school.
I feel you also as a person who has a BS in Economics, but sometimes it isn't what you actually know, but more over the pieces of paper you have to show potential employers how qualified you are.
Hello Ben, Im currently studying my butt off for the coming GMAT exam in July. My strategy for this exam is just knocking down one problem at a time and becoming familiar with the type of questions. Im currently using the GMAT study guide from the GMAC. I have been taking practice exams and Im not happy with the scores Ive been getting. Do you have any other recomendations that you can offer?
Hey Ben, i have a simple question: are u allowed to use the calculator during the exam?cuz if not, i wanna start praticing without it. just you know..it's better. Thanks!
becuase you only have 1.8 minutes per question !.. and GMAT is basically a CAT (Computer Based Adaptive Test) that means, computer will keep adjusting the level of difficulty of questions (from simple to difficult) depending upon your right or wrong answers.
therefore one must know smart ways to solve questions quickly so that they may not run short of time if they get difficult level questions !
the School I want to Apply to offers a 1 year MBA program.. Now i have not looked into this much but - how many years do i need to finish in B school to get to the final MBA year?
Great Job 640! What did you do your undergraduate degree in and does that matter when you apply to Bus school- also in what ratio are the GMAT and University grades looked at from abmission. is 50:50?
Thanks. I did my undergrad in accounting. Your undergrad really doesn't matter that much as long as you got decent grades. Experience is a major plus on your application. Any experience, whether in a business field or not. (Peace Corps for example). You GMAT score will count for between 40%-50% of your application and is def more important than grades.
So even if i know nothing about Business, Finance, or Accouting, I can still apply.. Does first year in B school get people caught up who were not in Business undergrads?- so could some one apply with an Undergrad in Political Science- and get in right after Graduating with a BA?
B-school is an overview of general business things. Accounting, marketing, finance, etc. Schools encourage people with limited biz backgrounds to apply.. Your PS degree won't be a problem.
As far applying right out of school, that depends on what school you are applying to. UGA won't let anyone even apply without 5 years experience. Others are more lenient. Your GMAT score will need to be significantly higher as a new grad with limited experience then with someone with say 10 years experience.
Wow! Thanks for the info, What B School did you get into, and also- what kinds of Jobs would you recommed i get, I'am a first year University student- Also would it be wise to spend my next summers studying for the Gmat- or Should i study just before the weeks Iam about to take it?
Do you mind if I ask what your undergrad was in? I only ask because I found some of the sentence correction problems hard. The last few questions I had were between grammatically incorrect awkward sentences and grammatically correct awkward sentences - that any professor on earth would hand your paper back to you to reword ;)
My undergrad was in accounting. If you look at "The Official Guide 11th Edition" there is a pretty good verbal review in it. Work through that, do the practice tests, and you should be fine
The test is setup and worded to make it a lot harder than it should be. Download GMAT Prep from the MBA website. It is in the same format as teh real exam; just learn the basics and you will be fine. Also use GMAT Powerprep. Gage the time it can be your friend if you know the material and your enemy if you do not. You also have up to 5 attempts per year at 250 dollars a pop until you pass it.
Wow, it took me 4 to 5 months of hardcore studying to beat the GMAT with a 590. All I needed was a 520 for probationary status, and a 550 for full admission.
Me too, brother. You have good verbal skills. I don't know being a native speaker would give you that much of an edge. I am an ESL, who got a 27 on it despite of studying. My practice scores were higher though.
Hey man that is a really good video. I have been psuedo planning to take the GMAT for about a year and now currently serving overseas BUT i do find time to study once in awhile so your 4 weeks worth and a very good score makes me confident ill will do well. i appreciate your vid man
I just want to let you know that this vid you did really helped in encouraging me to demystify the GMAT and distress some as well. I would like to see/hear more of you thoughts, so could you please make more vids.
Great video! I'm taking the GMAT this Saturday, and I'm kind of anxious, but it sounds like I've taken the same steps that you did, so hopefully I'll be at school in the fall :).
Thanks for putting the video up. It is very interesting and you made everything so clear. I am doing my GMAT in 2 months. Did you not think the verbal section was difficult?
Thanks for sharing. God bless:))

Thanks!
santomichele88 2 years ago
No calc on the test. That's why it's so important to learn the "smart" ways to solve problems
BenWannaBee 2 years ago
becuase you only have 1.8 minutes per question !.. and GMAT is basically a CAT (Computer Based Adaptive Test) that means, computer will keep adjusting the level of difficulty of questions (from simple to difficult) depending upon your right or wrong answers.
therefore one must know smart ways to solve questions quickly so that they may not run short of time if they get difficult level questions !

the School I want to Apply to offers a 1 year MBA program.. Now i have not looked into this much but - how many years do i need to finish in B school to get to the final MBA year?
tropicalmist999 2 years ago
Great Job 640! What did you do your undergraduate degree in and does that matter when you apply to Bus school- also in what ratio are the GMAT and University grades looked at from abmission. is 50:50?
tropicalmist999 2 years ago
BenWannaBee 2 years ago
So even if i know nothing about Business, Finance, or Accouting, I can still apply.. Does first year in B school get people caught up who were not in Business undergrads?- so could some one apply with an Undergrad in Political Science- and get in right after Graduating with a BA?
tropicalmist999 2 years ago
B-school is an overview of general business things. Accounting, marketing, finance, etc. Schools encourage people with limited biz backgrounds to apply.. Your PS degree won't be a problem.
As far applying right out of school, that depends on what school you are applying to. UGA won't let anyone even apply without 5 years experience. Others are more lenient. Your GMAT score will need to be significantly higher as a new grad with limited experience then with someone with say 10 years experience.

Wow! Thanks for the info, What B School did you get into, and also- what kinds of Jobs would you recommed i get, I'am a first year University student- Also would it be wise to spend my next summers studying for the Gmat- or Should i study just before the weeks Iam about to take it?
tropicalmist999 2 years ago
Great video and congrats on your score!

Hello.. Good tips thank you.. Can you please name some websites & books which would be helpful..?
