Some dimwit placed next to the video''The Sensational Alex Harvey Band''...which it is not...This song is by the american singer-songwriter Alex Harvey.
Even funnier is that EMI records woke up seeing over 33.000 views of my posting, with the usual reaction....pathetic...after 3 years.Maybe they just don't know that an Alex Harvey exists in US...whatever...
@20ceeyou06 I heard this song for the first time after I moved from Canada to the Netherlands a few years ago. It was a HUGE hit here in 1971, and in fact regularly makes the Nederland Radio 2 annual top 2000 songs of all time. It's telling that his Wikipedia page is only in Dutch, I think!
He also wrote Delta Dawn, Ruben James and Tulsa Turnaround, amongst other country songs for artists such as Kenny Rogers, Billy Ray Cyrus, etc...
brings back memories bought the album souvenirs thinkin it was the other alex and ended up loving it i still have it 36 years later. i think i paid £2-00 for it bargain
I remember this song very well! Lots of good memories! It was promoted heavily on the official Dutch radio station, Hilversum 3, way back in 1971. They labelled it the 'Troetelschijf' (=pet disc) for a whole week. In those days everybody thought Alex Harvey used a synthesizer for the string sound, but they were actually real strings, heavily compressed.
I sometimes get the chance to listen to Steve Wright's 'golden oldies' (or whatever) when listeners send up their personal favourites for airing from 3-3.30pm.
I shall send mine one day and will include this. Do you think he would play it?
Like many songs that were unsuccessful in the US, I heard this in 1971 on KFI, Los Angeles, an A/C station that played for image and not teen ratings. They're talk now...of course. Whatever happened to music?
Does anyone know where to find this on CD or as MP3? I love this song. The first time I heard it was at an exhibition where for the first time they were playing quadrophonic sound in the open air. A great sound and a great memory.
No,he was not.He isn't THAT Alex Harvey from the scottish band The Amazing Alex Harvey Band or whatever it was called back in the days. This one is an american singer songwriter, etc and he's got a site to prove it. :)))
No, dude. This is ALEXANDER Harvey, an American country singer that cam out about the same time as SAHB. I actually bought the LP when it came out thinking it was a (Scottish) Alex Harvey solo project.. THIS Alex wrote "Delta Dawn" (by Tanya Tucker) and "Reuben James" (by Kenny Rogers).
I recall listening to this on RNI around 1972, together with loads of other favourites such as 'Give Up Your Guns' by the Buoys, 'Manana Manana' by Bonnie St. Clair and (a year or two later) 'Love of Life' by Earth and Fire.
Fabulous music you simply didn't hear over in the UK.
@Glamagal2009 : From one RNI fan to another - do you remember a song that Tony Allen used to play? It was one of his favourites and contained the lines "Baby must have been a magician" on the fadeout. He played it a lot, along with this Alex Harvey song. Hope you can help - and thanks!
Second ALL MUSIC website, Alex Harvey's album released in 1971 features Kim Carnes and Kenny Rogers on the credits. Do you know what's the track name they provided background vocals, please?
Wow, I didn't think I'd ever hear this beautiful song again - I loved it in the early 70s. Thank you so much. The lyrics and melody are achingly beautiful. Does anyone still write such lovely songs, or is the world too full of foul-mouthed hotheads now? Sometimes seems that way to me, so it's wonderful to escape to this. Thank you.
Yes, I must be one of very few Brits who have heard this song, and only because I heard it from the Dutch pirate ship "Radio Veronica". I'm trying to obtain it on downloadable mp3, or even CD but no luck so far. Can anyone help ?
Anyway, great to hear it on youtube - been looking for 25 years (really !)
Its unbelievable this is Alex Harvey .Good Record .Got a good voice .Ive been listening to the Band for donkeys years and never heard this until last year
It's not! This Alex Harvey is an american. The band you've been listening to is a british outfit from the '60-'70s(something called ''The Amazing Alex Harvey Band''???kind of name....Nevermind that if you like this track!!!
