  • You can also check out more of Alex's music/info his official site is deltadawndotorg (have to spell out dot because Youtube won't allow the web address) - also on myspace/aharveysong

  • Check out the real Alex Harvey, American Singer/Songwriter of...Delta Dawn, Hell and High Water, Reuben James, Rings and...To Make My Life Beautiful - you can see him on Youtube Alex Harvey & Gineille.

  • I want a download of this beautiful song. WERE

  • on which album is this song?

  • @Rocketskates505 Sorry for the late answer...This song wasn't on any album...to my knowledge.I found it on a compilation of '70s love songs

  • VERY NICE ! BEAUTIFUL VOICE !

  • I listened to this on CD earlier. When the backing comes in it is just marvellous to hear.

  • Some dimwit placed next to the video''The Sensational Alex Harvey Band''...which it is not...This song is by the american singer-songwriter Alex Harvey.

Even funnier is that EMI records woke up seeing over 33.000 views of my posting, with the usual reaction....pathetic...after 3 years.Maybe they just don't know that an Alex Harvey exists in US...whatever...

  • @20ceeyou06 I heard this song for the first time after I moved from Canada to the Netherlands a few years ago. It was a HUGE hit here in 1971, and in fact regularly makes the Nederland Radio 2 annual top 2000 songs of all time. It's telling that his Wikipedia page is only in Dutch, I think!

He also wrote Delta Dawn, Ruben James and Tulsa Turnaround, amongst other country songs for artists such as Kenny Rogers, Billy Ray Cyrus, etc...

  • Well, I am going to get my 'Top 15' played on Radio Caroline, but I did tell them this should have been in the list of tracks I had to choose from.

  • brings back memories bought the album souvenirs thinkin it was the other alex and ended up loving it i still have it 36 years later. i think i paid £2-00 for it bargain

  • brings back memories bought the album souvenirs thinkin it was the other alex and ended up loving it i still have it 36 years later

  • very good song

  • I remember this song very well! Lots of good memories! It was promoted heavily on the official Dutch radio station, Hilversum 3, way back in 1971. They labelled it the 'Troetelschijf' (=pet disc) for a whole week. In those days everybody thought Alex Harvey used a synthesizer for the string sound, but they were actually real strings, heavily compressed.

  • I sometimes get the chance to listen to Steve Wright's 'golden oldies' (or whatever) when listeners send up their personal favourites for airing from 3-3.30pm.

I shall send mine one day and will include this. Do you think he would play it?

Naw. He's probably never heard of it!

  • love this song! heard it bout 10 times now....great lyrics love them

  • Very good - check Jim Ford too...-))

  • Nice...though too ''country'' for my taste or the message of the song...Jim Ford is OK

  • geweldig!!!!!!!!!!1

  • what a voice...

  • 'My Baby Must Be A Magician' by the Marvelletes is a possibility.

  • It wasn't the Marvelletes by any chance, was it?

  • Bern. Nothing immediately springs to mind, however, I shall do some research (and deep thinking!) and see what comes up.

Don't build your hopes up though.

    car

  • kippenvel

  • Like many songs that were unsuccessful in the US, I heard this in 1971 on KFI, Los Angeles, an A/C station that played for image and not teen ratings. They're talk now...of course. Whatever happened to music?

  • never die of love..Enjoy life and Alex Harvey..

  • Does anyone know where to find this on CD or as MP3? I love this song. The first time I heard it was at an exhibition where for the first time they were playing quadrophonic sound in the open air. A great sound and a great memory.

  • Aha, thanks very much. That's a 30 year old mystery finally dispelled!

  • Alkex Harvey = American?????

He was Scottish through and through!

  • No,he was not.He isn't THAT Alex Harvey from the scottish band The Amazing Alex Harvey Band or whatever it was called back in the days. This one is an american singer songwriter, etc and he's got a site to prove it. :)))

  • @20ceeyou06

THIS Alex Harvey was also the original singer of Delta Dawn, even before Tanya Tucker! His original version of that song is here on You Tube as well

  • @cmulwee001 just to clarify - Alex Harvey, the American Songwriter is the writer of Delta Dawn (yes, you could say he was the original too)

  • The Sensational Alex Harvey Band...that's the one with the scottish Alex in it

  • No, dude. This is ALEXANDER Harvey, an American country singer that cam out about the same time as SAHB. I actually bought the LP when it came out thinking it was a (Scottish) Alex Harvey solo project.. THIS Alex wrote "Delta Dawn" (by Tanya Tucker) and "Reuben James" (by Kenny Rogers).

  • Thank you, mailman63155. I'm just surprised that some are SO narrow minded that my earlier comment received four negative marks.

No matter, at least I know more now. Thanks again :-)

    John

  • Sterkte, kerel..

  • John, NIET doodgaan aub.

  • sweet song nice line..And the sweetest voice I ever heard. Is calling me to breakfast ....

  • een classic

  • A superb song.

I recall listening to this on RNI around 1972, together with loads of other favourites such as 'Give Up Your Guns' by the Buoys, 'Manana Manana' by Bonnie St. Clair and (a year or two later) 'Love of Life' by Earth and Fire.

Fabulous music you simply didn't hear over in the UK.

  • @Glamagal2009 : From one RNI fan to another - do you remember a song that Tony Allen used to play? It was one of his favourites and contained the lines "Baby must have been a magician" on the fadeout. He played it a lot, along with this Alex Harvey song. Hope you can help - and thanks!

  • been looking for this song for ages, like one of the previous writers i heard it on a pirate station and got a copy but in my many travells i lost it

  • I've found the track on a compilation CD called:

''Poetry in Pop'' published in 1992 by Capitol rec.(EMI Records inc.)and it is a dutch release only...I think

  • good song, came accross it on Radio 10 Gold in the Netherlands

  • Second ALL MUSIC website, Alex Harvey's album released in 1971 features Kim Carnes and Kenny Rogers on the credits. Do you know what's the track name they provided background vocals, please?

  • I wish I had the album...unfortunately, I have only this track-I'm sorry

  • One of the best POSITIVE love songs ever made. Still have the 45 single which i play on the pickup occasionally.

I just love this song! Thnx for posting!

  • I'm sorry....euh..geintje

  • Wow, I didn't think I'd ever hear this beautiful song again - I loved it in the early 70s. Thank you so much. The lyrics and melody are achingly beautiful. Does anyone still write such lovely songs, or is the world too full of foul-mouthed hotheads now? Sometimes seems that way to me, so it's wonderful to escape to this. Thank you.

  • It seems to me one of the early synthesizers is playing on this song. I wonder if somebody knows which type it is and who is playing.

  • Alex did it himself by overdubbing a lot of guitars !!! No synths, so far as I know .

    Kindest regards

  • The most beautifull love song ever!!heard it in the early 80's for the first time does anyone know more about this unknown alex harvey?

  • Alex Harvey was born in 1942 and i know that he was working with Kenny Rogers thats all i know
