Thanks for the video! Everything works as expected, except that in the latest "Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric" ami-0fe3dc7b gnome is not installed, so it won't be started by vncserver as stated in .vnc/xstartup. So it shall be installed separately, notice though that gnome desktop may be too heavy for a micro instance.
Hello, This all works very well. Except after restarting my VPS (ubuntu 10.10), it will work a few times, but after restarting my vps more than 2-3 times , the vncserver stops working, and I have to re-install the whole OS again and start over. I do everything, but when i start vncserver it will say there is already one running as :0 or :1 or :2 etc. So I go to the processes and I don't see any vnc server processes running.. I don't know what to do :s
Hello There..."Tutor"...This video tutorial is superb. It is clear and works. Thanks very much for your efforts. The issue now is that you can't actually USE that desktop Ubuntu Machine effectively. There are 30 thousand software tools on offer for ONE CLICK install but your tutorial does not cover how to create the SUPER USER with authority to MANAGE the machine. (in other words, it's quite a waste...to say the least.) All the best
When you stop your instance does the VNC4 SERVER and config stay as is or are they deleted the same way that happens when you terminate the instance? :D
XFCE desktop looks more appropriate for the micro instance.
sudo apt-get install xfce4
and "startxfce4 &" at the last line in .vnc/xstartup
