@DeRmItDeNsPiNeNtAnZt Hey Fritz, get lost. This is an ENGLISH FOLK SONG written in the 13th Century; some considerable time before Rauhnacht were around!
fugheles from old english fugelas(birds) From Germanic *fugla-. Cognate with Old Frisian fugel (West Frisian fûgel), Old High German fogal (German Vogel), Old Saxon fugal (Dutch vogel), Old Norse fugl (Swedish fågel, Danish fugl), Gothic fugls. The Germanic base is a variant of *flugla- ‘fly’ Old English flēogan also the old english fugel is still with us today as fowl.
Why oh why am I reading comparisons to Cradle of Filth? They are a completely different sub-genre! You cannot compare folk metal to gothic metal and say one band is better than the other because they are both so different. It's like comparing Behexen with Nightwish just becaue they both happen to be Finnish.
Much of the album is written in Old and Middle english which does have some Norse influences, so I guess it's not suprising you recognise some of it. The Old English language was spoken by the Anglo-Saxons well over 1000 years ago and died out with the Norman invasion in 1066.
Spoken old English never died out with the Norman invasion, it was not the language of officialdom any more that being French. But most of the population continued to speak old English for a very long time after 1066. If you go to parts of the North of England today you will hear the locals say words like night but pronounced neet similar to the old nicht.
"the irony of it being that Celts, French, Germans, Spaniards ect ect ect are ALL just as mixed up"
Exactly. Which is why I'm particularly annoyed that the mongrel tag is only in the case of England. For example- all those "pure" blood Scots with their Celtic/Basque/Angle/Norse/Irish/Pict ancestry.
The tag is used persistently by the pro-mass immigration lobby to sideline those with legitimate concerns. It has no relevance to history or culture.
Did anyone fail to notice that Anglo Saxons, Normans, Vikings et al were of a common racial origin, even culture as they spoke similar languages? Makes fascinating reading to discover that the people of Britain today are largely unchanged from the pre Roman stock. So I and my family who fought and died in war to defend our HOMElands have a right to be proud and exclusive and shun those who seek to usurp a nation thats is the envy of both the civilized and Uncivilized worlds. HAIL ENGLAND!

Until the 'delights' of a 'vibrant, multicultural society' were forced upon us the English were considered a homogenous people-in fact remarkably so, since we were an insular nation with the sea as a natural border. The germanic tribes composing the English nation were so closely related that they could understand each other without using an interpreter. After the C 5th,Norse Vikings and finally Normans underlined this close bloodline-hardly mongrel.Quite 'pure' really-unless you're a revisionist.

@seaxwielder You make no sense. I'm proud of being English, I love my heritage. Many races are purer, such as the Germans or French but our ancestry is far more mixed than theirs is. I can see no way how saying that makes anyone an anglophile, it just demonstrates that they have a vague understanding of where the "English" came from. I have no problem with saying I'm of the English race, so long as nobody thinks there is such a thing as "pure" Englishness because of the mixture of our races.
"Many races are 'purer',like the Germans and the French".Most people who live in France are the descendants of Gauls (Celts), as well as Italic people, Sarmatian peoples (Alans, Taifals), Bretons, Aquitanians (Basques), Iberians, Ligurians, Suebi, Jews and Greeks in southern France, mixed with Germanic peoples arriving at the end of the Roman Empire such as the Franks, the Visigoths and the Burgundians, some Moors or Saracens, and Vikings, known as Normans!
@seaxwielder Oh, terribly sorry that one of my examples, which wasn't actually important or indeed relevant to the point I was actually getting at which you've totally failed to respond to, was incorrect. I suppose that means my entire argument is invalidated now.
@seaxwielder Rofl. French are DEFINATELY not descendants of the Gauls. Those were almost wholly assimilated by the end of the Roman occupation there, and were utterly wiped out by all the tribes that washed over it in the next centuries; Visigoths, Franks, Burgundians etc. Just wanted to point that out. The closest you get to Gauls is in Bretagne, and even those are only very distantly related (Bretons came from the Celtic branch that split to the British isles).
These 2 individuals are not fascist/Nazi, and although I don't know them personally, racist either. All I hear is the sound of knowing where one comes from.
There is a rather large difference between "national pride" and "fascism". The race of the English is a mongrel one anyway, we're a mixture of Scandinavian, Roman, Celtic, Saxon, Angle, Jute. You name it, we've got it, so I highly doubt that anyone who has a real understanding of our past (like these guys quite clearly do) and takes pride in it would really have a problem with "non English" people, because there isn't one single race that makes English, it's a big mix of loads.
@redcoatsrule You're completely right, they were the true founders of England (good old Wessex), but do you think today's English would be what it is today without the mix of celtic, germanic, norse, Norman (technically norse but developed enough to make a noticable difference) and everything else we have had since then?
The Saxons were the original English, but who we are today is because of the huge variety of culture within us.
@666satanification666 Well the anglo saxons did bring in the Germanic influence... The real english people the aboriginals of that area where killed or pushed into wales and scotland (mainly wales). Also Normans were also of norse/germanic decent, they just happend to be given land in Normandy by the french because they were sick of having paris sacked by them :P. So the English today are more germanic/norse than you think...
Well yeah I suppose the Britons could be described as the real english but the concept of England wasn't actually introduced until around the period of Alfred the Great as I'm sure you know. Contrary to popular belief the arriving Angles and Saxons (and Jutes) didn't actually wipe out that much of the Britons' population, although they did quite a bit. As well as the Normans being descended from the Norse the Danes were also given a lot of land in East Anglia by Alfred so that's all Danish.
@666satanification666 what aload of bollocks cos there is a text saying raulf was bryttisc on his modor healf and his faeder waes Englisc besides the word Englaland means land of the angles (i'm sure you know that) you know that anglo bit of anglo saxon therefor as ive already said no England or English language without the anglo saxons!!!! the natives that were here before the anglo saxons came were britons and not even remotely Englisc also i don't believe the total wipe out theory .
@redcoatsrule ...What on earth are you talking about? I vaguely get what you mean at the end, if the total wipe out theory refers to the Saxons killing the Britons then I agree with you, genetic tests of today show us that the Saxons did not totally anihilate the British inhabitants, but there is evidence to say that they did do a fair amount of killing. Almost every chronicler at the time describes them as murderous hordes, an obvious exaggeration, but proof nonetheless of some killing.
How can the Britons become the 'real English'.449 the brothers Hengist and Horsa arrive to fight as mercenary warband leaders with followers from Jutland and Angeln or Engeln. The viking- like fighters came from the land of Engles Engla land, they called themselves the Englisc. How could the Welsh be the 'real English',since these newcomers had named the land after themselves? Ethnic cleansing and also apartheid WERE used against the Britons who ran.
@666satanification666 Try reading about this subject. The Danelaw was reconquered by Aethelflaed and King Edward. In 937 the Danish area became part of England, unified by King Athelstan the Mighty.Try reading the website dedicated to this period.
@Hrafnsmerki1 the briton natives were not the real English end of story ive already explained enough times and i don't think every norman was a pure breed norse i'm sick of that bollocks. Do the cymru(welsh) call the themselves english no they don't and the Englisc(anglo saxons) called the bryttisc welsh from wealas welisc, from wealh meaning a stranger, foreigner.
@redcoatsrule ok... well then who were the real English??... well i did say that the normans were of Germanic or Norse decent.... that implies that they werent all norse or germanic... Well the welsh call themselves welsh... Chinese people that immigrated to australia and became citizens call themselves australian... that doesnt mean that they werent australian to begin with... all im sayin is that the natives got pushed into wales.. well i made a mistake earlier The british is welsh and english
@Hrafnsmerki1 No 'British' is a civic term-and pretrty useless as a definition of a national identity. The Welsh English Scots and Irish are all proper ethnic identities.
@Hrafnsmerki1 The REAL English were the English the Engle who gave Engla land its name. They are an ancient northern people with a history which goes back thousands of years.Check it out!
@redcoatsrule (just read some other comments) To me it doesnt seem right to call the anglo saxons the REAL english.... they immigrated there they werent all born there. They might have started the idea of the English people but still i dont think you can call them the REAL english. Its just like with australia, All the colonial people that came here and conoliaized the place brought the idea of Australia... but the real australians are the aborignials...
.. Well it is right . There wasn’t an England here in Britain nor anywhere else in the world, until the Angles came here along with the Saxons and Jutes, lead supposedly by Hengist and Horsa and they settled down from Kent and hastily spread onwards to form Angleland, the clues in the name pal . lol
@666satanification666 Mongrel? That implies a racist belief in the 'pure' race.Which one would that be? Only the English are ever insulted in this manner, but I excuse you because both your lack of education and ignorance show you to be a product of the Anglophobe 'Liberal' revisionism which now infests our 'education 'system.
@seaxwielder What?! Shame this has come about. Not entirely sure where the idea that I am racist has come from simply because English are mongrels. There are purer races and there are mongrel races. I never made a statement that one is better than the other and it really doesn't make sense for anyone to believe anything otherwise. What is wrong with a race being mongrel? You seem to say I'm racist for claiming we are mongrels then go on about how it is a great insult to England?
@NSHunter95 Precisely! When did you ever hear any other race of people called by this dog term? I've got news for those who have been indoctrinated to spout this racist garbage against the English,we are not taking this shit with impunity anymore.
@seaxwielder Have you listened to a goddamn word I have been saying? You seem to have just been backing up what I've been arguing! I don't understand how the Saxon's interactions with other races has anything to do with it! I do know what the Danelaw was, and I do know that the Saxons were bastards to the Britons. However, genetic studies have proven that there is a lot of British blood in us still, plus (as you just said yourself), we absorbed the Danes in the Danelaw.
@666satanification666 - the "mongrel" tag has been rammed down our throats by the left. They think that by pointing out the "racial" mix of Angles,Saxons,Jutes,Danes, and even Normans (ALL originally from Denmark/ Schleswig Holstein) plus the addition of North- Western European "Celts" (Britons) this will mean we can have no objection to enforced mass immigration of completely alien cultures/religions who refuse to assimilate.
It's outrageous propaganda, but subtle and it's almost worked!
@adventussaxonum I hear what you're saying, but happen to disagree (except on the point about the Germanic people's common ancestors). I don't really see how it is used to justify mass immigration, but I definitely see how it can be (and should be) used to explain why hating foreigner migrants is bad. Having a problem with mass immigration is something I understand, but actually harbouring prejudice against those who have migrated isn't something I think should be tolerated.
@666satanification666 - It's used to justify mass immigration in this fashion: ANY objection to the NUMBERS of immigrants being admitted is met with the assertion that the English are all mongrel immigrants anyway (end of discussion). Most people do not have a problem with colour. They DO have a problem with ever increasing sections of British society refusing to assimilate or recognise the validity of the very society in which they sought to live . Why come here?
@adventussaxonum The mongrel tag has SOME validity, though little enough, the irony of it being that Celts, French, Germans, Spaniards ect ect ect are ALL just as mixed up. Blood purity rarely lasts more than a few hundred years.. unless your some isolated tribe of inbreds. It has some point if your arguing about blood. IF your arguing about culture though then it becomes some what mute.
@seaxwielder So really I really don't understand where you are coming from. My curious and obnoxious views? Could you tell me what they are please? From your description I don't actually know what it is that you think I believe. All I said in this argument is "the English race is not pure because there are so many different races which compose it" and then you've gone off on this big fucking rant about how I'm obnoxious? You're going to have to calm down and explain that to me I'm afraid.
Go cry somewhere else and stop pissing on everyone’s parade, the music is good, the English pride is immense. don’t like it? Then go spam some anti English video. You Red scum
@jackrumbold Big deal.Better than sending off thousands of men to kill brown people in Afghaniastan and Iraq in the name of 'peace'.Now that is fascism.
@jackrumbold Well I'm sorry you get that impression from them. There is actually nothing in their lyrics that gives off hits of Nazism. IF your thinking from their work with the 'Anti Geldof Compilation', its not really a fascist album.
@jackrumbold. The lyrical themes have to do with nationalistic pride, but they aren't Nazis, or at least they don't write about National Socialism or fascists views. I can't really say they aren't Nazis as I don't know the band personally, but I highly doubt it. They are just proud of their Anglo-Saxon heritage.
@VerginixAbbyAirsoft He is of the leftist strain in which ANY expression of natioanl pride automatically equals nazism. You are best of ignoring these idiots, who are merely victims of the current lefty propaganda.
@jackrumbold 1. Forefather aren't neo-Nazi's, not even close and 2. Even if they were neo-Nazi's, they would have the right to believe and support whatever they like. Freedom of speech and free expression is a good thing. I don't see how you get the idea that they are Nazi supporters anyway.
@codorra fugheles and ich don't come from german they are cognate with them words like they are with dutch ik and vogel and other germanic language cognates like Old Frisian fugel (West Frisian fûgel), Old High German fogal (German Vogel), Old Saxon fugal, Old Norse fugl ,gothic fugls, old english fugel.
middle english ich comes from old english ic Germanic cognates include Old Frisian ik, Old Saxon ik (Dutch ik), Old High German ih (German ich), Old Norse ek (Swedish jag), Gothic ik .
eve nthough i love tlaking abouth history and languages i think many peaple get sick and tired of peaple discussing it on youtube. maybe you should talk about it in a video abouth history becus most peaple watching it wil be interested. but many peaple hate it wen these thing are discussed at songs.
and waths the use calling me a stupid person? not much i just try to be considerate of those who only want to listen to a song en comment on that song. i myself love these history discussions and evrything but many peaple dont
another common germanic word was deor(meaning animal survives in modern english as deer) cognate with dutch dier german tier just like fugel survives as fowl in modern English another comon germanic word would be sword. old English sweord cognate with Old Frisian swerd, Old Saxon swerd (Dutch zwaard), Old High German swert (German Schwert), Old Norse sverð (Danish and Norwegian sverd, Swedish svärd).
fugheles doesn't come from norwegian or swedish it comes from old English fugelas and fugel(old english for birds and bird) it is cognate with the norwegian and words but doesn't come from them fugel is also in German as vogel and that which is a west germanic lanuage like English and to those idiots that think english stopped being used in the year 1066 your fuckin stupid it carried on being used by the Englisc folc but changed due to foreign influence.
They're actually singing in Middle English. The same English as Chaucer. Old English is in use before 1066. Early modern from Shakesperian, Modern from late Georgian onwards
@dreamthief12345 i don't know why i post comments like this but it really does my head in when people say old english stop being used bang on 1066 no it didn't.
@redcoatsrule I know it didn't. English has ever and always will be a fluid language, ever changing. Old English itself changed very frequently, as did middle and early modern english. Its more of a generalisation: 1066 marks the point in time where anglo-norman is introduced heavily to England, and marks the turning point between old and middle english, even through old english would have continued to be used among the rural populace for possibly over a century afterwards.
Yup, its medieval form of english. You see diffrent words, but look that there are words that are still in english, but spoken diffrently (Night for example)
3x Miri it is while summer ilast With fugheles song Oc nu neheth windes Blast And weder strong Ei, Ei! What this night is long! And ich with wel michel wrong Soregh and murn and fast* Miri it is 'tween dark and dark This fleeting stage 'Till we return back to the night From whence we came And henceforth our spears take aim Hope to win eternal fame Hear our names e'er more
Goddamn,I never even heard of this band before 10 minutes ago and I"m a fan already. This is good. Its about time we English had such an expressive voice to speak for us.
I've been struggling to get a copy of the cd for a good price from a reputable site (i don't know of any shops which sell real metal...so there's no point in looking in town)
I could dowload from itunes for like £8, but I'd really rather have a physical copy (and lyrics booklet!!!) any help?
Tried to google the modern english translation for the middle-english (no not Anglo-Saxon ;) lyrics. Couldn't find anything.Suggestions anyone?

Those were almost wholly assimilated by the end of the Roman occupation there, and were utterly wiped out by all the tribes that washed over it in the next centuries; Visigoths, Franks, Burgundians etc. Just wanted to point that out. The closest you get to Gauls is in Bretagne, and even those are only very distantly related (Bretons came from the Celtic branch that split to the British isles).

666satanification666 1 year ago
@666satanification666 without the anglo saxon s there wouldn't be an English anglo saxon is the origin of Englishness
redcoatsrule 1 year ago
@redcoatsrule You're completely right, they were the true founders of England (good old Wessex), but do you think today's English would be what it is today without the mix of celtic, germanic, norse, Norman (technically norse but developed enough to make a noticable difference) and everything else we have had since then?
The Saxons were the original English, but who we are today is because of the huge variety of culture within us.
666satanification666 1 year ago
@666satanification666 Well the anglo saxons did bring in the Germanic influence... The real english people the aboriginals of that area where killed or pushed into wales and scotland (mainly wales). Also Normans were also of norse/germanic decent, they just happend to be given land in Normandy by the french because they were sick of having paris sacked by them :P. So the English today are more germanic/norse than you think...
Hrafnsmerki1 1 year ago
Well yeah I suppose the Britons could be described as the real english but the concept of England wasn't actually introduced until around the period of Alfred the Great as I'm sure you know. Contrary to popular belief the arriving Angles and Saxons (and Jutes) didn't actually wipe out that much of the Britons' population, although they did quite a bit. As well as the Normans being descended from the Norse the Danes were also given a lot of land in East Anglia by Alfred so that's all Danish.
666satanification666 1 year ago
@666satanification666 what aload of bollocks cos there is a text saying raulf was bryttisc on his modor healf and his faeder waes Englisc besides the word Englaland means land of the angles (i'm sure you know that) you know that anglo bit of anglo saxon therefor as ive already said no England or English language without the anglo saxons!!!! the natives that were here before the anglo saxons came were britons and not even remotely Englisc also i don't believe the total wipe out theory .
redcoatsrule 1 year ago
@redcoatsrule ...What on earth are you talking about? I vaguely get what you mean at the end, if the total wipe out theory refers to the Saxons killing the Britons then I agree with you, genetic tests of today show us that the Saxons did not totally anihilate the British inhabitants, but there is evidence to say that they did do a fair amount of killing. Almost every chronicler at the time describes them as murderous hordes, an obvious exaggeration, but proof nonetheless of some killing.
666satanification666 1 year ago
@666satanification666 Totally wrong again.

@666satanification666 You really MUST read a bit more. Alfred the Great ?
The Venerable Bede wrote the Ecclesistical History of the ENGLISH people in the 7th century lad.
The English called themselves the Englisc from the 5th century onwards. They were called the English in Angeln for hundreds of years before that too.

... I know. What's your point? I really don't understand what you're actually getting at.
666satanification666 1 year ago
@Hrafnsmerki1 the briton natives were not the real English end of story ive already explained enough times and i don't think every norman was a pure breed norse i'm sick of that bollocks. Do the cymru(welsh) call the themselves english no they don't and the Englisc(anglo saxons) called the bryttisc welsh from wealas welisc, from wealh meaning a stranger, foreigner.
redcoatsrule 1 year ago
@redcoatsrule ok... well then who were the real English??... well i did say that the normans were of Germanic or Norse decent.... that implies that they werent all norse or germanic... Well the welsh call themselves welsh... Chinese people that immigrated to australia and became citizens call themselves australian... that doesnt mean that they werent australian to begin with... all im sayin is that the natives got pushed into wales.. well i made a mistake earlier The british is welsh and english
Hrafnsmerki1 1 year ago
@Hrafnsmerki1 No 'British' is a civic term-and pretrty useless as a definition of a national identity. The Welsh English Scots and Irish are all proper ethnic identities.

@Hrafnsmerki1 The REAL English were the English the Engle who gave Engla land its name. They are an ancient northern people with a history which goes back thousands of years.Check it out!
seaxwielder 1 year ago
@redcoatsrule (just read some other comments) To me it doesnt seem right to call the anglo saxons the REAL english.... they immigrated there they werent all born there. They might have started the idea of the English people but still i dont think you can call them the REAL english. Its just like with australia, All the colonial people that came here and conoliaized the place brought the idea of Australia... but the real australians are the aborignials...
Hrafnsmerki1 1 year ago
@Hrafnsmerki1

Only the English are ever insulted in this manner, but I excuse you because both your lack of education and ignorance show you to be a product of the Anglophobe 'Liberal' revisionism which now infests our 'education 'system.
seaxwielder 1 year ago
@seaxwielder What?! Shame this has come about. Not entirely sure where the idea that I am racist has come from simply because English are mongrels. There are purer races and there are mongrel races. I never made a statement that one is better than the other and it really doesn't make sense for anyone to believe anything otherwise. What is wrong with a race being mongrel? You seem to say I'm racist for claiming we are mongrels then go on about how it is a great insult to England?

NSHunter95 1 year ago
@NSHunter95 Precisely! When did you ever hear any other race of people called by this dog term? I've got news for those who have been indoctrinated to spout this racist garbage against the English,we are not taking this shit with impunity anymore.
seaxwielder 1 year ago
@seaxwielder Have you listened to a goddamn word I have been saying? You seem to have just been backing up what I've been arguing! I don't understand how the Saxon's interactions with other races has anything to do with it! I do know what the Danelaw was, and I do know that the Saxons were bastards to the Britons. However, genetic studies have proven that there is a lot of British blood in us still, plus (as you just said yourself), we absorbed the Danes in the Danelaw.
666satanification666 1 year ago
@666satanification666 - the "mongrel" tag has been rammed down our throats by the left. They think that by pointing out the "racial" mix of Angles,Saxons,Jutes,Danes, and even Normans (ALL originally from Denmark/ Schleswig Holstein) plus the addition of North- Western European "Celts" (Britons) this will mean we can have no objection to enforced mass immigration of completely alien cultures/religions who refuse to assimilate.
It's outrageous propaganda, but subtle and it's almost worked!
adventussaxonum 1 year ago
@adventussaxonum I hear what you're saying, but happen to disagree (except on the point about the Germanic people's common ancestors). I don't really see how it is used to justify mass immigration, but I definitely see how it can be (and should be) used to explain why hating foreigner migrants is bad. Having a problem with mass immigration is something I understand, but actually harbouring prejudice against those who have migrated isn't something I think should be tolerated.
666satanification666 1 year ago
@666satanification666 - It's used to justify mass immigration in this fashion: ANY objection to the NUMBERS of immigrants being admitted is met with the assertion that the English are all mongrel immigrants anyway (end of discussion). Most people do not have a problem with colour. They DO have a problem with ever increasing sections of British society refusing to assimilate or recognise the validity of the very society in which they sought to live . Why come here?
adventussaxonum 1 year ago
@adventussaxonum The mongrel tag has SOME validity, though little enough, the irony of it being that Celts, French, Germans, Spaniards ect ect ect are ALL just as mixed up. Blood purity rarely lasts more than a few hundred years.. unless your some isolated tribe of inbreds. It has some point if your arguing about blood. IF your arguing about culture though then it becomes some what mute.
Tiwaz81 11 months ago
@seaxwielder So really I really don't understand where you are coming from. My curious and obnoxious views? Could you tell me what they are please? From your description I don't actually know what it is that you think I believe. All I said in this argument is "the English race is not pure because there are so many different races which compose it" and then you've gone off on this big fucking rant about how I'm obnoxious? You're going to have to calm down and explain that to me I'm afraid.

@jackrumbold. The lyrical themes have to do with nationalistic pride, but they aren't Nazis, or at least they don't write about National Socialism or fascists views.

Many of the words that are unfamiliar to english speakers hail from Norse languages. For example:
fugheles - fugl norwegian and fogel in swedish.
FriendoftheDork 2 years ago
fugheles doesn't come from norwegian or swedish it comes from old English fugelas and fugel(old english for birds and bird) it is cognate with the norwegian and words but doesn't come from them fugel is also in German as vogel and that which is a west germanic lanuage like English and to those idiots that think english stopped being used in the year 1066 your fuckin stupid it carried on being used by the Englisc folc but changed due to foreign influence.

They're actually singing in Middle English. The same English as Chaucer. Old English is in use before 1066. Early modern from Shakesperian, Modern from late Georgian onwards

@dreamthief12345 i don't know why i post comments like this but it really does my head in when people say old english stop being used bang on 1066 no it didn't.
redcoatsrule 1 year ago
@redcoatsrule I know it didn't. English has ever and always will be a fluid language, ever changing. Old English itself changed very frequently, as did middle and early modern english. Its more of a generalisation: 1066 marks the point in time where anglo-norman is introduced heavily to England, and marks the turning point between old and middle english, even through old english would have continued to be used among the rural populace for possibly over a century afterwards.
dreamthief12345 1 year ago

It's quite a bit older than what Chaucer wrote in. But yes it's still middle english.
