  • @Linux4UnMe

I have plans to buy a laptop with intel HD 300 graphics card. Does Gnome 3 runs properly with this particular graphics card?

    Thanks :)

  • @saikatbsk

not sure to be honest mate... i know there are some issues with ati and gnome-shell... not sure if it has been fixed 100% yet... but you can't really go wrong with Nvidia on Linux

  • @Linux4UnMe

Thanks for reply. Have a nice day. :)

  • @DreSlimer

Dunno... Maybe. When the community "not Gnome" fixes up the useless paradigm of switching workspaces between applications LoL.

I see Power users go for Openbox over Kde.... But the more choices the better i guess

  • I will never forgive the gnome developers for what they did...

  • After some initial critical view i am beginning to like the new interface a lot.

But it still need some tweaking to become more better.

  • @fahadabid

this is an old vid. But yeah, i agree even today :)

  • well that was a boring review

  • @TheTerraxa cheers. I do try to make my reviews as Boring as possible just to annoy you ;)

  • im so happy with my desktop in mint katya just like i installed....i not sure im gonna install gnome 3...great video!!!!

  • @Lancioyz125

good to hear ;) and thanx

  • I am currently running Linux Mint 11 with GNOME 3 interface, it looks just like yours but the speed for mine is much faster. My pc hardware: AMD x4 945 3.0Ghz, 8GB of RAM, Nivida 460, 700 watts Rocket PSU.

When you goes to System Setting it was loading for 14 seconds. But When I go to system setting for mine, it took only 1 seconds. why your slower than mine?

  • @lildon24

I assume because 1. I am doing a screencast with the built in gnome-shell screen recorder which has a massive memory leak and uses 100% cpu usage. And 2, My specs are way under yours at 4gigs ram, dualcore amd 3ghz, nvidia 7800gtx ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe

I understand. Which linux distro are you running? Ubuntu 11.04, Linux Mint 11, Arch Linux, or Fedora 15?

  • @lildon24

on this video? Arch. Everyday? Arch ;)

  • No offense to anyone who likes this, but it seems like this is for people who love their mouse and never use a laptop. Making things happen with key bindings is the name of the game for me. I don't think this is for me. Fluxbox ....... where are you?????????.............

  • @kd0bgz

actually. quite the opposite. Gnome-shell's work flow is much more geared towards keyboard use and there is a binding for everything

  • @Linux4UnMe currently using the Gnome-Slackbuild. The config has needed to be tweaked from file editing(which I don't mind), and I'm leery of installing another manager that might need so much attention. Right now, it's gnome, compiz and maybe emerald as far as eye candy on my machine. I just hate tracking down bugs. Peace :)

  • Why is everything that I loved about Linux hitting rock bottom?? Gnome 3 is a disaster!

  • @TrickyEmu

It's early days yet... in the meantime theres plenty of other choices... Don't forget Kde4 was a disaster and now it rocks ;)

  • How to you minimise apps? Can you? Seems very cluttered when everything on that desktop springs up at once?

  • @22ness0hayden

minimise button is gone... but you can add it if you want it quite easily

  • So much people complaining -..- GNOME 3 has been recently released, give it a chance to evolve and mature and it will be popular like GNOME 2.x was and I don't like KDE, and for me I love different things =D

  • It surprises me, you use Arc Linux as your main system OS? Does it have advantages over Ubuntu, like better speed or better stability?

  • @MsPwain

Not really. The advantage is that you choose your own defaults while building the system instead of having it already set up for you. Plus the software is more up to date therefore bleeding edge, so things "could" break. But it is easy to rollback/fix things if you know what your doing

  • @Linux4UnMe OK, thanks. I guess I will live some time with Mint untill I try Arch, cause I am still new to Linux. I like the idea of arch though.

  • Thanks for the review. I've been messing around with Gnome 3 and to be honest, it's a few sandwiches short of a picnic. My overall impression with not only Linux, but Windows too is for some reason, they want the desktop to look (and act) like a cellphone. In a sense a step backwards /w a Windows 3.1-like interface.

  • @midfingr

True... more like a tablet i'de say... Gnome headed in that direction, Windows8, Kde are developing for Touch aswell.... seems to be the future.... Although W8 will have a full fallback mode which is good... I wish Gnome 3's fallback mode was better for those that don't want the new interface.... however I am starting to sweeten up a little to it.... couple years it should be ready i reckon

  • WTF?!!

  • @Nightlight35

    what?

  • How can you cant turn off your pc with gnome 3??? what a joke! lol

  • @mx22a

ofcoarse you can turn it off... you have to press the alt key to reveal the option though. Stupid I know.... It will likely change in 3.2 since so many people are complaining about it

  • I still think Linux Mint with Gnome 2.32 is the best, thanks to the Mint Menu. Makes everything easy. And I love having all my windows in a bar where I can just click them, instead of having to go to Activities, and then look. I even like Unity better than Gnome 3 at the moment.

  • alt+F2

    r

    enter

    restart gnome-shell

  • archlinux +1

  • Nice video mate. Quick question...does Gnome still support Compiz-fusion? It looks kind of boring and it would be to bad if Compiz is no more.

  • @PAINTuRED

cheers bud. No, You cannot have Compiz in Gnome-shell

  • @Linux4UnMe We don't need to use compiz. just hover your mouse over activities.

  • @KushagraI1276

Say what?? You cannot compare Mutter to Compiz :s

  • Nice review - Thanks.

  • Thanks for the video! Looks interesting.

I'm building a new computer atm. I will use latest Ubuntu when it is released on the 28th. Don't know if I'll like Unity - if not I'll go for Gnome - not a KDE fan.

I still like the AWN dock so Unity will have to be an improvement on that to get my interest.

  • @technoboi0

cheers mate. yer gnome and unity have got a while to go yet before people will accept it

  • Im an Arch Linux guy and have moved to Openbox for more customization judging by the videos gnome 3 seems to have removed all customization and i dont like what they have done with the DE.

  • @MrAceBond

agreed. I don't mind the new design that much.... just bugs me that all the useful

functionalities are not there by default. arghh

  • Still wasting desktop space by not merging the title bar to the taskbar at the top. My pet hate in linux, it makes everything look chunky in comparison to Windows and OSX.

  • @2010Cess

This is just Gnome mate..... there are plenty of other Desktop environments.......

  • @Linux4UnMe I think it looks like in GNOME3 it is missing some things I like in the current GNOME, and also I am afraid it is more insecure with the extention capability. So I maybe look at LXDE or XFCE instead.

  • Probably the biggest and the fullest review i 've seen so far. Thanks!

  • Hmm, I think I'll stick with my KDE 4.6 for some more times.

This GNOME 3.0 reminds me of KDE 4.0 so in other words unfinished, bugged, incomplete.

  • @TheLinuxsensei

true dat. Alot of work needs to be done yet though....... ;)

  • I used it for like 3 days got over it pretty quikly, did like the look of it though.

  • @SeanHosie54

indeed indeed. Needs alot of work

  • Extensions extensions extensions.. im tired of hearing that in this video comments. I want that stuff out of the box, not with no lame add-on. Other then that great review Kaddy.

  • @74ryanwolf

i hear ya mate.... I can't really be bothered with extensions either.... otherwise I would learn more about it....... gnome should have the features by default

  • @74ryanwolf I agree, but just installing 1 package resolves a lot of the problems.

  • I still cant help but think great potential is there, but for a lot of people to accept it, it needs a lot more functionality out of the box, otherwise its just too limiting. Hopefully they fix that recording bug too

  • @ElderSnake90

    yep. Agreed

  • this is something to get used to, it seems pretty good but I liked the older Gnome versions, KDE, XFCE are gonna be my main desktop environments now unless for some reason I adjust to it.

  • @Ubuntufrog

true.... I prefer old Gnome too for now...... but I'm happy with Kde

  • wow unity is looking real good at this moment

  • @gonzo191

unity? say what? ......... This is gnome-shell... Unity is a seperate project

  • @Linux4UnMe i know it was a comparison to how unity and gnome 3 match up right now, atm unity appears to be better than g3 as its been out longer(im guessing)

  • @gonzo191 Yes I have the same after I had seen Gnome shell. I run now unity on all my pc's. Still buggy and it is still not my system that I will choose but I trie it now as much as I can to get used to. Still after a few weeks working with it I'm not used to it. I still lov e Gnome 2 more.

Unity will get some more changes and i hope that they ficks the menu so that ir reacts when i click on the menu button. Now it takes some time till it opens.

  • One thing I don't like about Gnome 3 is the HUGE titlebar on every window. Considering this sorta thing was made for netbooks, it's a bit of a stupid idea.

  • @sheps999 I agree huge turn off, but that can easily be fixed with css.

  • @robvelor It can? I'd appreciate a few pointers :)

  • @sheps999

    agreed

  • Good review. I thought the fallback mode was better and I hoped that would be an escape from gnome-shell, but noooo :)

  • @scorici

lol yer I was shocked to see a half baked gnome-panel fallback....

  • @xpawnrip yeah bad decision on their behalf, but you can get over that installing gnome shell extensions, then you'll get the icons back on the desktop and right click support, so no biggie

  • @robvelor

i'm yet to find out how to do that in the extensions..... so I am not sure if it "can" be done yet..... I will look into this..... if you know how though... drop me a line

  • @Linux4UnMe look for it in the AUR, gnome-shell-extensions, pretty much solves everything you need, right click, icons on desktop, and ribbon on the desktop.

  • Install gnome-shell-extensions to get right click working, also you need to kill the shell and go back in for minimize button to appear. Gnome shell is very extensible, as months pass by I'm sure you'll get all the things you'd like back.

  • @robvelor

yer hopefully.... it would be nice not having to mess with extensions to get basic functionality back ;)

  • Unity is 10 imes better as I see this. Unity now has the fall back to Gnome 2.32. It will dissapear but Unity ad it self isn that bad as you get used to it. I don like the menu from Unity but the side bar is just great.

That you need to go to the corner to see everything that is open. Not my thing. The unity side bar shows what is open and even as it is more times open. I use now Unity but some times i switch back to classic mode. That is now the same as my 10.10 was.

  • @emiel1976ep you can get over that using gnome shell extensions, then you'll get the ribbon on the desktop without going to the corner to know what is open.

  • @robvelor That that is not there out of the box. I tried Gnome shell on Ubuntu 11.04. It was a dissaster. It distroied my other options. i couldn't go back to Unity and Classic mode.

For me is a side bar like Unity, importand. I mis the bar were I can see what is minimized and there are some great options in Unity that made me use Unity more than Classic. Wile I like the menu in Classic mode.

Try Unity and compare the 2.

Still Classic is my nr 1 but Unity follows that quit close.

  • @emiel1976ep I've tried unity and I like shell better, I agree not having those options by default is a huge mistake but you can easily fix that by just installing an extra package. Personally I don't like the global menu unity is trying to change to, like mac os. Other than that its not bad, but I like how workspaces are handled dynamically on gnome shell.

  • @robvelor Shell doesn't work for me but I agree with the menu. In Unithy it is just crap. I still love the classic menu the most by far. The Unity menu is just crap. It is still bugy and it is way to big and way to complicated to use it fast. That is wy i use the side bar a lot. It gives so much ectra's that I mis in Shell. I want to see what I have opent all the time and if possible, see what is open as i have more than 1 of the same programs open and that is what Unity can do the best for me.

  • @emiel1976ep sure, it's all about personal preference and that's what makes linux great :)

  • @robvelor That is true but I hope that they change to what was possible in Gnome 2. You can change almost everything to what you like.

And yes it is what I like and don't like. My personal thing is, is that both shell and unity are not my thing. Unity works better for me than Shell but both are to clossed for me. Shell is even to locked down for me. That is why I like Gnome 2. You can make it how you want and even give it a Windows menu and style. Not that I want but you can do it.

  • Reageren op deze video...It is all personal but I think that the classic mode in Unity a big plus is above the fall back mode of gnome shell.

Still I hope that both will improve and give more freedom back to the end user because now i get the feeling that they start to lock everything. Starts to look like that they follow Apple and lock everything up and make it the way they like it.

  • @robvelor

yer I prefer gnome-shell over unity anyday..... but atm they are both unusable for the majority imo

  • @Linux4UnMe I agree, it does seem unfinished, but definitely looks promosing in the near future.

  • @Linux4UnMe <I showed Unity to some friends and I let them try it. After that I showed Gnome 2 and let them try it. Unity was to complicated for them wile Gnome 2 was easy and they loved it when i showed how i had my desktop. I showed them first the look after an installation and later how I have my main pc. They all switched to Ubuntu now with the Gnome 2. I tried Shell and a friend of me did the same but he called me because he didn't now how to put of the pc.

  • @emiel1976ep

cool, thanx for the comment. I like how Unity also has a 2d backup that doesn't need 3d acceleration. That is something Gnome-shell should also implement

  • gnome3 beats unity thank ops gods

  • I've been trying it since it was available on the testing arch repos, so far I have more good things to say about it than bad, I'm sure it will get better as the first updates are released. Thanks for the video.
