Such beauty as this interpretation by Barenboim is truly a rare treat. I am working on this piece myself, and it is inspirational beyond words to hear such a masterful presentation of this beautiful Beethoven sonata. Bravo Barenboim, bravo!
You can search for any other interpretation of beethoven's sonatas, no one has the same combination of sensibility and comprehension of beethoven's intentions and spirit. It is absolutely perfect. It s a kind of evidence for ears and soul. Technique matters less with a slow sonata, but what is more difficult to acquire, is what you won t find in any school and with any professor, it s when what someone does with his fingers is instantanetly the expression of his soul
@darkspartan78 Agree! i used to think like that. And i just only can play the intro. But this song, don't know somehow it brings me so much inspirations, cannot stop making improvisation versions. It's like a train taking me to new lands which i can see through every single notes. So amazing song!
@darkspartan78 Yeah, I know what you mean. And even when I get the notes, rythem, everything, I will never be able to play it with the expression he does... :/
And I'd like to add that when I first saw this performance, it taught me why people move while playing music. It's the feeling of the music itself in you and expressing it. It's hard to express such emotion without moving.
This performance... Is breathtaking. I don't know of many words which can be used to describe something like this. This is art in its purest form; this is the Mona Lisa of music. This is pure genius and takes more talent than anything else in the world.
Barenboim did a perfect job. He performed this so tangibly, he showed the world just how incredible music can be with this performance. And of course, Beethoven would be pleased. This song is beauty itself.
Best rendition ever. I tried to play the piano but it was not in the cards for me. I do know enough, however, to be certain (at least for me) that it is proportionately more difficult to play a piece slower than faster-compare another great pianist but always faster Valentina Lisitsa. Flawless though she is, I prefer this rendition for its slower, and i think more difficult, tempo.
Comparing Barenboim playing this movement to anyone else is ludicrous. His absolute virtuosity and connection is incredible. Never mind the spiritual aspect..the cerebral quality is stellar.
I've listened to many different interpretations of this movement, all well-played and moving in their own way. But this one feels like the "right" one. It just somehow captures that lyrical, song-like feeling - cantabile - that eludes even the most technically proficient pianists. I would want this interpretation to be played at my funeral.
I love the way he does the transitions, and I can't help but be drawn into the mood he creates with such depth of feeling - slow but not ponderous, careful but not strict, a reverent masterpiece in my opinion.
Daniel is just an amazing performer. I love his style and feeling. I grew up musically listening at his performances (in vinil records), and I simply haven't find anyone who could play this well. Thanks for posting this video!.
alexilmagnifico: right on the money, if you like it, spend the money, but it would be cool to be able to watch all 1020 minutes of these 6 DVDs online. keep wondering when netflix et al are going to catch up to the online music services in level of DVD content they stream. with music, it's almost getting to the point where a subscription to a service is the only thing that makes sense.

Barenboim is definitely one of the greatest living musicians/performers/conductors.
