I wanna try to give the Mighty Orbots a come back, though it might be a while before I get that chance; however. For now I'm stuck watching the theme song, and the transformation sequence; however cool it is. For the theme song, I wanna hire Journey to sing the new theme song I wrote out. But i can't do that until AWESOME ENTERTAINMENT is a real company. But it will be soon.
I remember this cartoon from the early 80's. It was always on WAAAYYY to early (5:30 a.m. in Wisconsin) and I only saw it a few times, but I remember thinking the animation was head and shoulders above the other stuff currently running (mostly Hanna Barbara schlock). Little did I know I was watching Japanamation (that word didn't exist, at least in my little town).
As a loyal dedicated Transformers G1 fan, I must admit that this cartoon had just as much juice as TF during that first season in 84. I remember debating with other kids about the quality of animation being the best and how both Mighty Orbots and Optimus Prime had a cool block style, not to mention the color scheme and helmet being similar. I personally feel Tonka knew that it couldn't go after big companies like Hasbro but felt the squeeze from this quality upstart and decided to kill it.
A pity this didn't go on longer--though its success was derived from the popularity of Voltron, the Godmars influence makes this a lot cooler in my mind (plus, the animation is just ridiculously good).
Voltron is something so I don't want to compare and Mighty Orbots is worth looking for since the robots that combine have five different personalities.....
@sort187 There was no Japanese version. This was copied from Godmars anime. Same robot. Only thing they changed was how the individual robots looked before transforming. The artwork was done by a Japanese studio hired by an American company. Same deal like Transformers and Thundercats.
Tonka tried to sue them because they thought they were trying to copy their Gobots line and actually won too despite being wrong so thats why it was pulled from the air after only 13 episodes (gay I know)
@sort187 I dunno about that. From this clip, I'd say the animation is the difference between anything by Shounen Jump and anything by Gainax; the underdog PWNS. Plus this isn't adapted from a japanese show like Voltron and Power Rangers was, it's actually the other way around, being aired in America BEFORE Japan.
I never knew about the Gobots lawsuit until recently. I always thought it got killed by being sandwiched between Dragon's Lair and Turbo Teen...two of the most suck-ass cartoons in TV history!
They actually proposed a second season, but it was blocked by the toy companies who thought it was competing too much with other transformable toys such as Go-Bots and Transformers. A shame..I loved the show!
i wonder what would a live action version look like .the robots where the main characters that combined into one robot someone please make a masterpiece of mighty orbots
I really really liked this show over here (Latin America)!! ^^ Good memories!
I always wondered how the hell was that the robots grow so big as to take Rob and Oh No inside!! It was like a freakin building inside there!!! All you guys remember when Rob had to command the Orbots by himself?
This has the longer version of the song. Coolness! I wish that one day they would release the show on DVD. Fans really want it. The robot that would come from 'Godmars'.
Damn, such memories! I loved this show! It kicked ass back in the day and, in my opinion, kicks ass of most of today's "american anime."
You guys suppose we can get a petition to the original producers to crank out a Mighty Orbot DVD or something? I've got a hunger to watch this thing again!!
Wow I remember this on channel 7 waaaay back, was one of those cartoons that you'd actually set an alarm to on a Saturday morning, unlike now where everything is computer animated, all of this stuff was hand drawn and painted..thumbs up on the flash back.
Yep! That would be "Raid on the Shadowstar". The Orbots actually try to take out Umbra on their own, WITHOUT Rob! (They think he's going to replace them.) When Rob finds out, he teleports to where they are, but is intercepted and captured by Umbra.
Boy, I thought I was the only one on earth who remembered the Mighty Orbots, nice to see I ain't alone!! This had some really great animation and effects, better then most back in the day!
OMG!!! Mighty Orbots! I love the female robots - bow? and boo are they? they're so cool and sexy! And I love their nemesis....that sun/planet dude what's his name. Definitely my favorite uniting-robots-into-one right next to the Voltron lions version! Love the song too! and Ohno and that cute pilot whats-his-name
The list of comments on this video are like a mile long, it really seems like people love this show. makes me think that if we're never gonna get a DVD of the show then those of us who do have episodes of the show should like band together and make a torrent out of the entire series or something.
Honestly, I couldn't give a shit whether or not the DVD set is bootlegged. The coloration and use of flare effects in the animation was remarkable for its time. I suspect more hours/render-frame went into this 'cartoon' than anything else of its day. Awesome.
Hands down my favorite cartoon as a kid, before Galaxy Rangers and Transformers...the music is awesome and the show is hilarious and well done. One of a kind.
This show had a movie to it in the late 80's, anyone know what it was called or even heard of it? I had seen it when I was a kid but cant remember the title of it.
I loved Orbots because it didn't seem designed to sell toys like so much of the great wasteland of 80's animation. It was a real, bonafide CARTOON. I'm sure if it became a huge hit and didn't get swiped by the GO-BOTS legal vultures it would've produced some toys. But still, my point is Orbots had heart.
Those idiots at Tonka were the ones who destroyed the Orbots. They sued the creators on the basis that the name sounded too close to their "Gobots" toyline and actually won. Another reason to hate the Gobots.
I agree with you..the gobots sucked hard; a plain ripoff of every robot show there ever was and i hated it with a passion. I looked forward to seeing Orbots every saturday morn
It amazes me how nuts they went with foreshortening and perspective in these 80's cartoons. You don't get that anymore, only flat shit nowadays like Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends.
Well it was done by an anime studio. This is one of TMS (Tokyo Movie Shinsha)'s first television series for American Staturday mornings done in conjunction with MGM.
