As a EU citizen I believe something very drastic must happen in order for us to do that, don't forget... we have a huge stake in making sure the US stays strong and healthy; our economies would severely suffer from a collapse of the dollar. Only this could trigger a switch from the dollar as reserve currency. This would probably hurt the EU as much as the USA, Its pretty safe to say no one wants this...

But giving corporations more tax exemptions is dangerous, you can't be lowering and raising taxes every 4 years. Companies are always looking for maximum profits so the low wages coupled with ridiculous tax exemptions in India & China is attracting them, its part of the great game of capitalism!

Adam Smith was an early champion of Laissez-faire, essentially freedom of markets and free trade which has always been a core principle of Economic Liberalism. I agree that China is out-competing the world when it comes to prices, but in the end its really up to us consumers to decide if we prefer quality over quantity, its not government's role to decide for us...

Forming and "perfecting" a union of 20+ countries is no easy task. I'm pretty sure we don't want a federation so we are pretty much creating a new form of government that will continue to foster great unity and prosperity into the next couple of centuries!
