Strange as it may sound, for me the TR1 torso monster was and is scarier than the TRA one. It's smaller and crappily rendered, but somehow it's much creepier.
I think that's what Crystal Dynamics didn't really understand generally; scaling everything up wasn't always needed. It created a much more epic feel, but TR1 used level design to evoke more feelings than one of vastness - claustrophobia, for example. Not to mention that at times during TRA it just looked like Lara had shrunk.
After Valve included the developer's commentary in Half Life 2 I thought many more would follow their example. I can't understand why this didn't happen, because it's a very cheap and effective way of making the user appreciate every little detail of the game and the efforts of the people behind it, and connect with him on a more personal level.
I'm wondering why they weren't able to show the rib cage for the mutant boss (like in TR1) in TRA? Was it because of ESRBs limitations? I know they had to take out the sequence of being impaled by spikes or the rating would've been brought up to mature instead of teen.
One thing bother me. Tony says so much about not placing magic in TR1. And what we've got in Anniversary? All the Atlantis hi-tech changed into some crazy mumbo-jumbo. That's the thing I couldn't stand playing Anniversary - lack of those marvellous cutscen with inprisoning Natla in criogenic capsule. Just some ice-crystal-thing... That was huge disappointment
The designer's comments are an extra unlockable feature in Tomb Raider Anniversary. I'll explain more to that on your channel a little later on.
As for TR1 and its remake, some people just love it and some don't. I guess that if you started out with TR1, you'll find the remake to be exaggerating, things falling out of proportion.
Thank you for your comment, happy raiding, happy Christmas! :)
Not exactly what I think about TRA - it was great with all those gameplay changes [especially Natla's Mines - from hate to lova I could say] but even if story in TR1 was merely told it was WAY better. And TR1 intention wasn't creating such $#!t like Underworld...
And to sum up - thanks for explanations in my channel, happy Christmas with your family and crazy New Year's Eve party
So remember everyone - if you don't want your young son nor daughter became a frustrated kid or youngster, wait few years with presents such as "Tomb Raider Complete Edition from part I to L". Give them normal childhood, not next generation of Tomb Raider adicts like you or me xP
Now, when I get bored, I fight for a moment with my computer [cursing] and run the TR1, which antique control system drive me crazy [and againg cursing], but this game TOTALLY change my life. The serie of games, to be exact. I was playing TR3, then TR4 [which I still didn't finish by myself...] and it was probably the moment when I start interesting in history, art and things like that. And of course - I started cursing back then xP
What to say... I didn't got the original and I think that's why my Designer's Comments didn't work. I'm glad to AT LEAST hear those. Great work, man, great work...
To TR1 - when I remember myself playing it [it was 2001... no comment, please...] I remember how hard and extremly stressing it was. And to think that I was playing like total, 11 years old lame, standing in one place and getting all hits. And I start cursing just when I was playing. And now - pff! Few minuts per level...
Thank you for uploading these! I just finished Underworld and was really disappointed to not find any designer commentary as I really enjoyed listening to it in TRA. Seems Underworld does not nearly have as much replay value :(
After fighting the torso I was waiting for the rest of the body thats is legs. I as waiting for those god damn legs and they didnt appear. Now it seems silly but I was 7 that time lol. Anyway completing Tomb Raider 1 without any cheats while being 7yrs old is probably biggest achievement in my life so far. And Im so proud of it xD
Thanks a lot for making theese! As I think I've allready told you I hate to play with Toby and Jason talking something on the back so It's very rewarding to actually see what they're talking about and pay attention to really listen since my english isn't perfect and I love TR1 and anniversary a lot :P Yay long commenters on a vid this time XD
Yeah, I played TR1 in 2006 and realized to my suprise, there was nothing to be scared of... I remember it so clearly though, I used to be like constantly shakin like a leaf when I played it back in the days (Could have been because I was like 9 years old) :D
Anyway, love the all these vids, I decided to try out TRA this weekend and for every level I finished, I was like "Yay, I wanna see lkjkorn's vid for this level!" Saw them all, one at a time ;)

I really do wish that they would reimagine Tomb Raider II as they did number 1 for Anniversary.
The original story could take place right after Underworld and Lara could try to make up for nearly bringing the world to Ragnarok.

Thanks a lot! I agree, it's kind of hard when you're concentrating on the gameplay. Secret for me is adding subtitles ;).

Eww! The torso in TR1 looks freaky! Just knowing that I'm going to have to fight that thing later on in the game is...just wow. XD

And I can understand your "concerns", lol.

lol. I fought the torso in TR1 today. It wasn't as freaky as I thought it would be. It was kinda hilarious in a way. XD
