The language is called Braj Bhasha. Before the spread of standard Hindi (which is based on the old Delhi dialect), Braj was the dialect spoken around Agra and Mathura, including the area, called 'Braj bhoomi', where the god Krishna was meant to have grown up. The book is superb - the first Devdas film stayed true to the book - whilst this film is cinematically stricking and not accurate to the original story, I love it!
