As a special ed teacher this caught my eye. I had one student with selective mutism, and I feel I failed him. I want to find how to help, because God has a way of putting people in my life that I never intend. Some are learning experience, and some I help. I apologize on every behalf of every teacher who failed you. BTW, you have a lot to say, and we value your words.
im an 18yr boy at school i was referred to a the quiet kid people tryed to talk to me befor but i never said a word back and i felt sad about ib had this my entire life and i have just found out i hade this about a few months ago no one has tryed to figgure out what i have or help me im dealing with this alone but the wierd this is i care about it but i cant find my self enoff to show it or get help
i get referred to as "mute girl" or " the girl who does not talk" at school. and im 17. i've had this disorder my whole life. i am going to try and do whatever i can to fight this and make it go away.
@Bethany123456789999 I know how you feel Bethany, I'm 17 and I've been seen as that girl too since grade 2. Even my boyfriend tells everyone that I just don't talk to people.
I used to have selective mutism from age 3 till age 11 it was hard and i still don't like social situations today, i'm currently 15 and have been talking 4 years and a half, its still really hard - but i'm getting there.
im the silent girl too ..but i think ive gotten much better in 6th grade i was quiet for the whole year..but im defenitely not going to give up..b/c i deserve to be happy like everyone else...and there is a difference btw refusal and defance..i was none of those either..but my teachers thought i was :(
im also "the girl who never talked." even now a senior in high school im still sometimes refered to as that. i hate it. "there is a world of difference between refusal and failure" is one of my favorite quotes. it describes SM really well. great poem!

I was selective mute from the time when others my age were just learning how to talk until I was 16. I'm 21 now and I'm slowly going back into it.

@Jessica164 I once dated a guy who dumped me because I was too shy, how about that ...
