Interesting. The piece is done well. I think it's nice to see a young person out on stage singing counter-tenor. That doesn't happen all that often. I almost studied counter-tenor techniques, but I ended up developing my Baritone range. Now my upper-register only comes in handy during "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.
The song is "Dove sei amato bene?" by Handel from the opera Rodelinda. I just got back from Aspen where I heard him sing a scene from Handel's Theodora. His voice has made remarkable progress in the past year. His distinctively warm tone, often missing in many counter tenors, was even more refined and beautiful. It seems LA Opera hired him last spring for a principle role in Noye's Fludde. Hope to hear much more from him!
I got to see the whole Spotlight Awards in person. All the students were amazing. This singer though had the audience spell-bound with his sincerety, pure notes, and unusaually rich counter-tenor voice. Several of the people around me were so moved they had tears in their eyes when he sang. His technique is impressive, especially for one so young. Kudos to Caleb Barnes and his voice teacher!
An amazing talent recently discovered by me at USC opera scenes.
