We don't need a central bank to "stabilize" the economy and the banking system. After all, the banking system pre-1913 wasn't really all that bad. The Long Depression is a myth, as the original recession only lasted 6 years, and there was actually GDP GROWTH soon thereafter. The bank panic recessions of the 1800s were actually pretty short (about 1-3 years on average).  But the Fed proponents paint this gloomy picture of unregulated banks gone wild and everyone becoming poor instantly.
