  • i am 12 and tom waites is my all time favorite singer. im not sure i love his raspier voice but still truely beautiful!

  • GENIOUS!

I love this song soooooo much!

  • Even on the worst night, Waits makes me glad to be alive - and at least as glad that he's alive.

  • 10 people have never had a silly girl's arms around them

  • Wow, how many times in one night can someone play this? So, so sweet, so perfect.

  • I don't wait.. but Tom Waits

  • nothing much to say but, thanks Tom.

  • I an not a big fan of Tom Waits, but with this song he touched my soul...

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!

  • wauw :)

  • How can this man tell me what my boyfriend isn't able to tell?

No doubt Tom Waits is just ingenious.

  • Ally Mcbeal brought me here...Vonda Shepard sings this in an episode in season 2...this song is beautiful

  • No great song is ever long enough...

  • Wow. Even after one year of adamantly tracking down every song Tom Waits has ever put out, I'm still being pleasantly surprised to find find new ones. Thank you.

  • You can also get this version of the song on the album 'Tom Waits: Frank's Wild Years Demos,' though it's a very rare CD. (Limited to only 500 copies worldwide) Definetly one of the best love songs ever.

  • This is awesome. On which dvd-edition do I find the studio take out?

  • So how come anybody wrote another lovesong after this one?

  • @Fanthemenace absolutely agree. Although Johnsburg, Illinois is right up there for me as well.

  • great song sung perfectly.

  • This is Schubert reborn

  • Wordless.

  • my heart feels so delicate and opened...and i wish even more, that he would come home. i can't stop listening to the simplicity and profound beauty of his voice and that of the song, always able to pierce my heart. Oh, how i love Tom Waits' voice.

  • In case anyone was still wondering, Tom wrote this song for the film "One From the Heart" and it was sung by Crystal Gayle in the film score, which is on CD along with the rest of his tunes from the score. all memorable. It's my favourite CD of all his works.

  • Amazing song!

    ♥ K ♥ H ♥ G ♥

  • i probably constituted about nearly 20 plays of this.

  • I whant to ask why everything true is so sad,it is damn beautiful but so sad

2:26 wow, amazing, I need to hear that once more

    no sé ,pero es preciosaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  • This song... It's to beautiful to describe..

  • google mp3iify to convert this video to an mp3.

  • This is taken from the soundtrack for the film One From The Heart. The entire soundtrack was written by Tom Waits and performed by Tom and Crystal Gayle. Available on DVD and CD. A beautiful score and a beautiful film.

  • This track is taken from the soundtrack of the film One From The Heart available on cd and DVD. The entire soundtrack was written by Waits and performed by Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle. The version on the soundtrack is sung by Crystal Gayle. A beautiful film and a beautiful recording. The film is directed by Francis Ford Coppolla. Enjoy.

  • Thank you for posting this. My only complaint about this song is that it is too short (though I appreciate its pointedness)! Beautiful.

  • This song just needs to play over and over on one continuous loop. That would make me happy.

  • i want this song to my funeral

  • which album is this beauty on??? Please tell me, I'm listening this over and over and crying so much. I raise my glass to his glory (TW, not my ex, LOL)

  • @SteelyVelvet

It's not on any album, but on a dvd. It's part of the bonus material.

    amazon.com/One-Heart-Frederic-Forrest/dp/B0000YRL8K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1275826025&sr=1-1

  • @SteelyVelvet Ya its on an album. Soundtrack to the film "One from the heart". Sung by Crystal Gayle though. Easy enough to get. Try watching live version posted by SarahV. Pure quality..

  • lyrics anyone?

  • I never heard this before. Excellent.

  • I stumbled across this by accident yesterday and now i feel as though my life is complete! Simple words, gorgeous melody and a voice that makes Leonard Cohen sound like Tweety Pie!.....i could listen to this over and over and never tire of it....i could go on but there aren't enough superlatives.

  • @dubb1995 just retract the Leonard Cohen line and your comment will have more meaning. I love Tom Waits and make no mistake he respects Leonard Cohen's work and voice. Don't lower yourself to the dummy dubbie level.

  • @impact49 I love leonard cohen too and certainly meant no disrespect lo him..it was just throwaway comment and was in no way meant to be derogative.

  • this is better then the crystal gale version, in my opinion.

  • tom waits

  • it's the most beautiful thing i've ever heard...

  • beautiful song

  • genius.

  • Tom W. jesteś wielki.

  • feeling, only feeling.......

  • I can't get enough of this song... I hear it at least twice a day. I only wish it was longer.

  • Cute and moving:)

  • this is one of the greatest ballads ever written. the message is delivered in under two minutes... all of us hopeless romantics can only dream of writing a song this brilliant.

  • CooL

  • I don't know if I'm crying or smiling right now...

  • I've tried to listen to this song without tearing up, and so far I can't do it. The simplicity of this song is part of what's so moving about it. Too many other songwriters would over-emphasize the emotion when writing/singing a song like this, but Tom Waits pares it down, letting the simplicity of the emotion speak for itself. Real art.

  • Well said, SZRD.

He nails it without any fluff or filler.

In his voice the heartache is heard.

Simple words and melody to express so much.

I listen to this song once a night before shutting down my computer and going to bed. It sets my mind at ease and cleanses my emotional palette so it's fresh for a new day.

Thank you, podpower, for posting this.

Thank you, Tom, for being so wonderful.

  • Thnx guys and girls for your kind remarks about this video, which, after all, is just something I made and put out there...

Really good to see/read the kind of emotions it evokes...

Thanx for posting? No way, my pleasure!

Cause the world deserves to know... not just about Tom or this song in particular, but about the true good and great things in life!

Music, at least, is one of them!

    Coolpeace y'all! :D

  • Great great song.

  • Thanks indeed. Nice slide show and I've not heard this version before.

  • When I die 'You've got to take me home.' This is my last will and testament.

  • billonear not to soon, I hope

  • :-) Thank you.

  • This song hits so close to home right now

  • damn, this guy remainds me ive got blood on my veins

  • thx for uploading and nice collection of pictures

  • He has perfect pitch on every note, even while singing through the gravel in his throat. It's just pure genius and singers like this don't come around but a few times in a generation. The song is impeccable, coming in under two minutes. Tom Waits is not a "jam" singer. Say what you have to say.... and move on. Haunting, moving and completely captivating. Sung with grace in a major key, surrounded by the girt and grime of a voice tortured by life experience. Can't say it enough: Genius.

  • It's fucking unbelievable. I don't know, what's the matter with this guy. He doesn't have even a real "voice" in the classic sence, but this pain, this tears in it is completely unbelievable.

This is true poetry, thank you

  • Total and brilliant ball-clenching grip of the language..

  • Friend, this is wonderfull, I have to agree. I heard this song first done by Holly cole, you kinda feel like you can hear the blood dripping from her wrists onto the piano as she sings it. Listen to the album Temptation, she did a whole mess of Tom covers.

  • Beautiful!

  • Pure magic.................

  • Thanks for posting this video Podpower. What a little piece of heaven, eh? Tom Waits is loved and admired by many of us. This is truly a beautiful song. Thanks again!

  • Thnx very much and you're welcome! Love this little piece of magic!

  • Anyone know what CD this song is on? not the Crystal Gale version, the one with Tom Waits singing this.

  • One from the Heart ;)

  • Hai, podpower here...

This version, the one with Tom Waits singing it, is not available on any cd to my knowledge. I ripped the audio of the dvd containing the movie One from the heart. On this dvd there are extras... among others several 'rough' versions of what would later become the soundtrack to this movie. So if you like this track... buy the dvd! Be sure to get the right one though! There are at least two versions out there; one with just the movie and one with the movie AND the extras!

  • @podpower do you have the mp3 as i have the dvd but obviously the wrong one??

i think i just need this song..

  • Waits keeps it all in perspective for me. There are very few musicians that can bring a tear to my eye

  • To dmw321: I've just discovered old Tom and every song so far has brought a tear to my eye. I'm stunned by his voice and honesty.

  • I'm sitting here listening to this over and over...I almost forgot how it feels to love.

  • I tend to think of history in terms of centuries...not days...our time here is very brief...

  • Oh, rough and ready Tom Wait's! My hats off to you!

  • Simply beautiful! My great uncle was a hobo...at one time, it was the fashion in middle class America for the American male to jump trains and become a hobo.

The length for being a hobo was usually no more than 6 wks., but it was a lifetime in stories for the one's who did it.

  • Truly beautiful, but incredibly heartbreaking. Thank you for posting it, I have never heard this song before.

  • Tom Wait's you look to me like the typical 1930's bully, yet you sing so beautifully...

I'm glad you used your gift for the good, instead of?

  • Most excellent. -Ron

  • where do you get this version?

  • the answer is in the info at the right side

be sure to get the correct dvd by the way...

there are two versions out there, as far as i know...

one containing the extras and one with just the movie!

    check amazon :D

  • thanks. i need to buy this version!

  • Touching!

  • love it...it's a sad but awsome song

  • great song...

  • (you've gotta)take me home turned a romantic piece into a "the piano has been drinking not me" kind of song. it's the difference between "he's in love" and "he's wasted".

    Well, being Tom, "he's both".

  • I made a comment that the reissue of the soudntack also has Empty Pockets on it at the end. You gotta hear this amazing suite on the reissue. It's stunning. SO, by the way, I'm guessing that maybe this version here was on the extras of the DVD...the audio quality of some of those extras, especially tom playing some stuff for the engineer, is just fabulous. I guess the reissue of the DVD with extras came out around the same time the CD reissue came out.

wonderful stuff. Cheers to the arranger, 2

  • got more than half of the song by ear, could upload it as soon as i finish it, if anyone is interested.

  • thanks...I believe this song is in Tom's first songbook, of which I cannot find at the moment. THis is, ofcourse, from One From The Heart. If you folks haven't heard the reissue CD of this soundtrack with the added suite with Empty Pockets in it, it's an astonishing song, and unbelievable that it was left off on the first issue of One From The Heart.

Just classic. Look for the CD with the black trim and color shot of the street on the cover.

  • i wanna play that. great performance.

  • i love this track. reminds me of my soulmate

  • Another American masterpiece by Tom Waits. Life enhancingly touching and quite beautiful.

    Thanks for posting.

  • short but sweet

  • oh oh my god, this is amazing

  • Beautiful!

  • I love Tom -- and I've never heard this before. I'll be playing it this Christmas for my wife.

  • Wow. I didn't know about this version. Is there any record I can get it on or is it only on the DVD? I have practically evey Tom Waits album out there, official and unofficial but not this. And i need to have it! No offense to Crystal Gayle but Tom Waits should have sung all of the songs on One from the HEart.

  • If he agreed with you he wouldn't have invited her... I'm glad he did. I mean, Tom Waits is a composition genius, but the One From the Heart soundtrack needed a touch of innocence and softness (I think the album is kinda kitsch) that Crystal's voice has. 4 me, It's definitely among the Top Ten albums ever.

  • Actually, I don't think that Crystal Gayle was chosen by Tom. It was coppola's decision that he should work with a female singer and I believe Bette Middler was first choice but that's by the by: I wasn't proffesing to speak for Tom Waits; i was simply giving my own opinion. I prefer Waits' own versions but it's still a very good album.

  • There's no need for getting defensive :) I respect your opinion and partially agree with you. But not all songs could be sung by Tom alone, because some are clearly "dialogues". but I get what you mean, there are some other songs that would go more Tomish if the only thing we heard was a deep cracked voice and a piano...

  • Sorry if I expressed myself too defensively... i'm unused to civility on Youtube :) Yes, the duets clearly had to be duets and Cystal Gayle sings her parts well enough; it's the tracks sung solo by Crystal Gayle that I prefer to hear Tom sing. His take on Old Boyfriends on the Smother Brothers show is spine tingling. But they are still brilliant songs regrdless but I tend to see it as a flawed recording.

  • note my comment to beatrobert up at the top

  • He's got the light on him. A man who was meant to be. And meant to be in our lives. THe One From THe Heart DVD has some audio extras it might be from it, but somehow I doubt it. THe extras, however, are sonically amazing.

  • i am so greatful that i have tommy's music in my life

  • So much poetry in so little time. Just to confirm that size don't count...:)

  • awesome

  • Thnx! :-D

  • How can someone make you cry in so little time with so few words, the man is truly a poet genius...

  • You are totally on my wavelength

  • :-D

  • Said it once, say it again: this is LOVELY.

    Waits is THE poet.

  • One of his best... thanks for the upload! =)

    Next Fannin Street? *smile*

  • You're welcome! Who knows what's next... ;-)

  • This is magnificent.. simple but yet so beautiful.

  • Thnx! It really is beautiful.

  • Sometimes less is so much more!

  • I agree! Nice little song, isn't it? :-D

  • what album is this song on? any version, I dont care!

  • It's from the 'One From the Heart' Album/soundtrack but Crystal Gale sings it.

  • You're right! One of my favorite albums... and though I like the version on the album I prefer this one... Just that little bit more!

  • where did this version come from, though? I can't find it on any album.

  • One From The Heart soundtrack

  • I LOVE this! Please tell me where I can download the music.

  • Absolutely lovely.

  • Thnx very much! Just a little something I put together. Glad you like it!

  • This guys something unique and special

  • He is! Apparently he's coming to Europe this summer, so I'll make sure not to miss out on that!
