Wow. Even after one year of adamantly tracking down every song Tom Waits has ever put out, I'm still being pleasantly surprised to find find new ones. Thank you.
You can also get this version of the song on the album 'Tom Waits: Frank's Wild Years Demos,' though it's a very rare CD. (Limited to only 500 copies worldwide) Definetly one of the best love songs ever.
my heart feels so delicate and opened...and i wish even more, that he would come home. i can't stop listening to the simplicity and profound beauty of his voice and that of the song, always able to pierce my heart. Oh, how i love Tom Waits' voice.
In case anyone was still wondering, Tom wrote this song for the film "One From the Heart" and it was sung by Crystal Gayle in the film score, which is on CD along with the rest of his tunes from the score. all memorable. It's my favourite CD of all his works.
This is taken from the soundtrack for the film One From The Heart. The entire soundtrack was written by Tom Waits and performed by Tom and Crystal Gayle. Available on DVD and CD. A beautiful score and a beautiful film.

I stumbled across this by accident yesterday and now i feel as though my life is complete! Simple words, gorgeous melody and a voice that makes Leonard Cohen sound like Tweety Pie!.....i could listen to this over and over and never tire of it....i could go on but there aren't enough superlatives.
@dubb1995 just retract the Leonard Cohen line and your comment will have more meaning. I love Tom Waits and make no mistake he respects Leonard Cohen's work and voice. Don't lower yourself to the dummy dubbie level.
this is one of the greatest ballads ever written. the message is delivered in under two minutes... all of us hopeless romantics can only dream of writing a song this brilliant.
I've tried to listen to this song without tearing up, and so far I can't do it. The simplicity of this song is part of what's so moving about it. Too many other songwriters would over-emphasize the emotion when writing/singing a song like this, but Tom Waits pares it down, letting the simplicity of the emotion speak for itself. Real art.
I listen to this song once a night before shutting down my computer and going to bed. It sets my mind at ease and cleanses my emotional palette so it's fresh for a new day.
He has perfect pitch on every note, even while singing through the gravel in his throat. It's just pure genius and singers like this don't come around but a few times in a generation. The song is impeccable, coming in under two minutes. Tom Waits is not a "jam" singer. Say what you have to say.... and move on. Haunting, moving and completely captivating. Sung with grace in a major key, surrounded by the girt and grime of a voice tortured by life experience. Can't say it enough: Genius.
It's fucking unbelievable. I don't know, what's the matter with this guy. He doesn't have even a real "voice" in the classic sence, but this pain, this tears in it is completely unbelievable.
Friend, this is wonderfull, I have to agree. I heard this song first done by Holly cole, you kinda feel like you can hear the blood dripping from her wrists onto the piano as she sings it. Listen to the album Temptation, she did a whole mess of Tom covers.
Thanks for posting this video Podpower. What a little piece of heaven, eh? Tom Waits is loved and admired by many of us. This is truly a beautiful song. Thanks again!
This version, the one with Tom Waits singing it, is not available on any cd to my knowledge. I ripped the audio of the dvd containing the movie One from the heart. On this dvd there are extras... among others several 'rough' versions of what would later become the soundtrack to this movie. So if you like this track... buy the dvd! Be sure to get the right one though! There are at least two versions out there; one with just the movie and one with the movie AND the extras!
Simply beautiful! My great uncle was a hobo...at one time, it was the fashion in middle class America for the American male to jump trains and become a hobo.
The length for being a hobo was usually no more than 6 wks., but it was a lifetime in stories for the one's who did it.
(you've gotta)take me home turned a romantic piece into a "the piano has been drinking not me" kind of song. it's the difference between "he's in love" and "he's wasted".
I made a comment that the reissue of the soudntack also has Empty Pockets on it at the end. You gotta hear this amazing suite on the reissue. It's stunning. SO, by the way, I'm guessing that maybe this version here was on the extras of the DVD...the audio quality of some of those extras, especially tom playing some stuff for the engineer, is just fabulous. I guess the reissue of the DVD with extras came out around the same time the CD reissue came out.
thanks...I believe this song is in Tom's first songbook, of which I cannot find at the moment. THis is, ofcourse, from One From The Heart. If you folks haven't heard the reissue CD of this soundtrack with the added suite with Empty Pockets in it, it's an astonishing song, and unbelievable that it was left off on the first issue of One From The Heart.
Just classic. Look for the CD with the black trim and color shot of the street on the cover.
Wow. I didn't know about this version. Is there any record I can get it on or is it only on the DVD? I have practically evey Tom Waits album out there, official and unofficial but not this. And i need to have it! No offense to Crystal Gayle but Tom Waits should have sung all of the songs on One from the HEart.
If he agreed with you he wouldn't have invited her... I'm glad he did. I mean, Tom Waits is a composition genius, but the One From the Heart soundtrack needed a touch of innocence and softness (I think the album is kinda kitsch) that Crystal's voice has. 4 me, It's definitely among the Top Ten albums ever.
Actually, I don't think that Crystal Gayle was chosen by Tom. It was coppola's decision that he should work with a female singer and I believe Bette Middler was first choice but that's by the by: I wasn't proffesing to speak for Tom Waits; i was simply giving my own opinion. I prefer Waits' own versions but it's still a very good album.
There's no need for getting defensive :) I respect your opinion and partially agree with you. But not all songs could be sung by Tom alone, because some are clearly "dialogues". but I get what you mean, there are some other songs that would go more Tomish if the only thing we heard was a deep cracked voice and a piano...
Sorry if I expressed myself too defensively... i'm unused to civility on Youtube :) Yes, the duets clearly had to be duets and Cystal Gayle sings her parts well enough; it's the tracks sung solo by Crystal Gayle that I prefer to hear Tom sing. His take on Old Boyfriends on the Smother Brothers show is spine tingling. But they are still brilliant songs regrdless but I tend to see it as a flawed recording.
He's got the light on him. A man who was meant to be. And meant to be in our lives. THe One From THe Heart DVD has some audio extras it might be from it, but somehow I doubt it. THe extras, however, are sonically amazing.
