Pretty far from Othello, but what a delivery he gives, so passionate and with his usual power and volume, excess within control. Del Monaco is sadly overlooked, but he surely ranked among the greatest
To tomzoricic: your impolite comments are noted. I happen to admire the best of Mario del Monaco's recordings very much; but his singing was decidedly variable - especially from the late 1950s on, when his voice became increasingly dry. As for the performance of Tu ca nun chiagne posted here - I stand by my earlier observations.
MDM is certainly charismatic here, but his voice sounds rather dry. Unfortunately he pushed his way through this song with an unremitting forte and didn't have the energy for a decent squillo (ring) on the high note at the end. Martinelli thought Caruso's version of this song the best, and chose it as one of his "desert island discs".
Of course it is. You still had doubts about that? I'm now beggining to understand Butterfly and why the critics use to say it's His best opera. It is genial -- very rich score, full of "sheet music metaphores". But Tosca is still the best. I love all of his operas anyway, except Edgar, which I still don't know. It is very actual music. Verdi is too much thought to the theater (grand opéra) and sooo repetitive. Sometimes, it is even boring. Puccini is perfect.
Doooku Are you for real or you write comment just becouse you have nothing to do??????????? Mario Del monaco voice, was simply amazing , one of the best TENOR that mother nature gave us.
Oh my God!!! What a voice. I've been a fan for long years, but he sounds so incredible here. I also just discovered Corelli's version here on Youtube and that too is simply amazing! What the opera world would not give to have either one of those voices now and it's incredible to think they were contemporaries!
Il più grande tenore di tutti i tempi. Nessuna voce, fino ad oggi, può avvicinarglisi. Questa interpretazione è una pietra miliare, un riferimento insuperato di cosa vuol dire veramente cantare.
hello my name is vanessa gorgan. i was killed by a man 3 years ago, and now i am back to kill. if i show up in your room tonight with bleeding eyeballs and a slashed throat, dont be alarmed, im just coming to kill you. PASTE THIS ON 10 VIDEOS OR I WILL COME FOR YOU IN 18 DAYS.
...and today we need to hear all these tenors without passion, voice, and they are boring. Mario Del Monaco was an incredible voice, an outstanding artist. The opera now is just a show, similar to holiday on ice.
Yes my friend in your american understanding as burger at Mc Donald, but in our Europian culture opera is a synonym for much more, this a cultural event.
Fabris77 ... I've tried several times to post an answer, but it doesn't seem to take. I'll try again. They were two separate Sullivan shows. I was just amused that it seemed he only had one suit. I also heard him on Sullivan sing the Butterfly duet with Kirsten, a Vesti la Giubba (in a tux and somewhere on YouTube and a Celeste Aida.
Fabris .. He sang this and the "Musica Prohibita" that's also up here, with him in the same suit, BTW., on the old Ed Sullivan show. As a ancient DelMonaco fan from age 14 (I'm now 70) I was lucky enough to have seen these performances live from my living room in South Philly. I waited all week to hear him on the show. This would have been back in the mid to late '50's. The sound doesn't stop. It just overwhelms, doesn't it!?
Del Monaco non dava certo il meglio di se nelle canzoni napoletane:anzi direi che era negato per questo genere musicale. La pesantezza dell'emissione e l'enfasi declamatoria dell'accento, non giocavano a suo favore.
if you find a tenor today that sings like Del Monaco, please let me know. I will keep listening the old records of Del Monaco, Di Stefano, and Corelli, and don't go to the theaters. Today opera is a sad and boring show. Just a show. Grande Del Monaco!!!!!!
You are 100% right my friend.Today Opera is a joke and mediocrity rules.Perhaps, there are not good belcanto teachers like melocchi, who can teach the new generations of singers.
Mediocre teachers only produce mediocre tenors.
If Del monaco or Corelli were singing today they will put a lot singers out of business.
Так проходит слава мира... Оставляя сиротой высокое искусство. Такое совершенство голоса уже, видно, более невозможно. Спасибо Италии за дель Монако!!!
