@willwelsh816 That is the exotic sound of the "cuica", played by Airto Moreira. I think you can actually see him play it in the Isle of Wight footage.
This is not music for the simpleminded nor can it be comprehended by those who have not gotten past shuffling in e flat. To understand how it fits together and works takes a kind of sophistication far beyond the simple. It is just another kind of beautiful.
Hey all, my dear men! I have seen so little, but really enough - thanks Jazzmen! Any chance at all any of you know where I can buy this exact recording? Fillmore cd's seem not to have it, neither the other ones, at least not the exact full version. Anyone know where I can find this tune I will be grateful to you so very honest much and more. Thank you and enjoy the great music so loved and so overlooked! Thank you mister Miles and thanks to all who were there, and may God bless You and us too!
I wonder if Sony has the full unedited un-macero-ated tapes of these performances. I must have at least 100 Miles CDs but I don't have this set because of the way it was edited. Thanks for posting this though-- it makes me think I should buy it anyway.
@pongespob Don't be so condemning. Miles was trying to see what was possible if rhythm took the place of melody and harmony. It was pretty brave in 1970.
@pongespob The raspy airy random-note-ness is what I love most about Miles Davis. He also bends and clips notes in ways you don't anticipate, plays in front of the beat, behind the beat, through the beat...you never know. There are hundreds of "technically consistent" trumpet players but i find them boring
@ajdicks "...He also bends and clips notes in ways you don't anticipate, plays in front of the beat, behind the beat, through the beat...you never know...."
Yeah mistakes due to lack of control are like that.
have you checked the clip on youtube, miles davis all blues 1964 la?
how he plays behind the beat in that clip is too cool. if it was lack of control he would never get back on the beat but he does so often. you should check him out more thoroughly before leaving such comments.
@pongespob also from my experience of playing this song. it's all based on cues. so when miles cues the melody he HAS to anticipate before others. otherwise everyone will be just looking at him all the time for his cues and look like an idiot on the stage.
One of his greatest albums-four nights in a row... I think!? Where are you? I want you back! ...

This is awesome.
I've got a USA copy of this on vinyl , and its quite a different mix.
I prefer this one , the head is included a few times more.
Is this a re-edited edition?

@bypassa: Miles Davis was a Columbia recording artist. You should be able to find it in their catalog or on Amazon.

@samanthajanepink i think the way it got macero'd, they only kept what they deemed the best parts of the performance.

@ajdicks Miles was trying to see what was possible if he substituted his raspy, airy, wrong-note noise for an actual trumpet player.
