The Hoth scenes were filmed in Norway, and when it's winter here and it's getting dark the snow turn more blue. We call it "The Blue Hour", because everything turns blue. It was suppoed to get dark in this sequence right? So the 2004 version feels more realistic. Snow isn't always white, it changes colour.
Adywan does an excellent job on his restorations, but in this case, I think the bluer tint is better for the Hoth scenes. It makes it look a thousand times colder.
I hope the blu-rays will look as good as this "Revisited" Version. I liked the color correction work! I wish G.L. cared about it as mush as Adywan does!
@Jediiii none of us would be here without GL, they are his movies. Like it or lump it, he can do what he wants. Saying that I still have nightmares about where Legolas skateboards at Helm's Deep.
The blue tint is nowhere near that blue. Someone made it bluer to prove their point. Not to mention, every TV is different depending on how their settings are, i.e. warm or cool, RGB, etc. IT'S NOT THAT BLUE ON THE DVD! It's not a fucking ocean! Somebody either made it bluer on purpose, or by accident, but my DVD isn't anything like that. So Adywan decides (incorrectly) to remove the blue tint, like it's an error. Pfft. Remove the Godfather's sepia tone then, too.
I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be getting dark, that's why it was dark and blue in the original, the new ones (while really well done) are too bright.
I don't completely agree with the color corrections Adywan does, especially in a scene like this. 6 months of the year, I live in snowy conditions and in a snow squall the color is often grey/blue.. not quite as blue as the non-color corrected film, but much closer to that than Adywan's version which looks like a sunny day being interrupted by a quick snow storm. In this scene it was getting late, around dusk, which makes the adjustments inaccurate.
@o7levi I do think that it looks too bright in the revisted clip but that's I believe due to the color changes made for the dvd in 2004. In an attempt to remove dirt and grain using computer filters, Lowry Digital probably brightened the whole movie and then artificially darkened it. This made it very difficult for Adywan to recover detail in the highlights.
There is an upload of this same clip but from the original dvd. It's not as bright and high contrast.
Well to me, snow = cold, and snow is white. The blue seems too over the top because even in scenes where 'cold' isn't really a highlight, the colour is still there (for continuity i guess). Good work Adywan.
@ 2:52 Ben: "Luke....LUKE!!!" Luke: "Aunt beru jus five more minutes..." Ben: "LUKE!!! get the fuck up!" Luke: "ok ok im up...damn its cold" Ben: "its so cold your penis is really small right now" Luke: "Um, wtf" Ben: "I mean you must go to the Fagobah system" Luke: Fagobah system? why?" Ben: "You must find yoda he is the homo that taught me to appreciate the touch of man" Luke:"...um i think im jus gona lay here and let the wampa eat me!"
meh... the original was definitely really blue... but i think your re-coloring misses the point....The intention of the original blue is the subconscious blue = cold and also that it is late in the day, almost night. now granted it was overly blue... but it gave you a sense of temperature and time.. your version is way too bright. It feels like mid day on the outside scenes and like a cheesy Sci-fi on the interior scenes. if you had kept some of the blue it would have helped.
@omcentire If you want Adywan to know your deal let him know on facebook on the groups Star wars: Revisited and Empire: Revisited.
It's not only the Hoth scenes that are blue, I can understand that bkue would make the scene more cold, but the blue tint is there throughout the whole movie..someone has made a major flaw when color correcting this film.
@omcentire if you read the description of the video it clearly states that colours got messed up with the comparison and the blues got stripped from the revisited version. Also the original was never as blue or dark in these scenes as it is now in the Official DVD's but also the brightness wasn't increased it just looks that was when compared to the horrible colour of the 2004 DVD version.
@omcentire also check out my channel and you can see the true colour of my corrected version of this scene without the comparison and you will see what i mean
Correcting the blue of The Empire Strikes Back is like correcting the green of The Matrix. In other words, it misses the point entirely. Here's my bitch Adywan who did such great things with the Star Wars revisits decides NOT to color correct the major-league yellow tint of that first film that extends beyond Tatooine and reaches into the grays of space and the Death Star, but on TESB - which has perfect art direction and intentional usage of blues and blacks - gets the correction treatment.
I just hate it when colour manipulation is used and the blue colour WHAT THE FUCK! They’re trying to make it look darker or what. The original is how it was filmed lets just, keep it that way.
i really hope this is not finished.... i'm looking at the DVD of the theatrical version (not the 04 one) and ... the color is too bright. it is night... it should be darker. not blue... but darker.
I loooove the massive drop in the blue cast, it makes it seem soo much colder. I would have dropped down the warm tones though, to bring some of the colour out of those flesh tones and/or, brought down the overall saturation. It looks great as is til you see the actors faces (not so much in the base, Leia's stuff looks great!) Maybe bring down the contrast and/or brightness too, seeing as it was late in the afternoon In-verse wise.
It's coming along. It's amazing how fantastic color correction can make the whole feel different. It feels like it is all enhanced like the PT, but it all looks real. Great work.
Adywan don't like blue filter none. The idea is that blue makes things seem colder.

@VictorLepanto Yeah but then the whole movie dont neeed that blue filter does it? why does dagobah or bespin need to be blue?

The blue adds a coldness to the scenes. Almost like it's dusk. Either way is fine, really.

@lukenukem1976 Grammar bad. " I still have nightmare about the scene in which Legolas skateboards". That's better.

The ultimate reason for the amount of blue in the 2004 version is to match up with Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for Hoth.

Thanx a lot!!
