I'm greek and i live in Greece and for years now the RIGHT recipe is : >tomatoes >cucumber >peppers >olives >onion >feta cheese and of course olive oil :D this salad called ''Choriatiki'' and means it's (a recipe) from village :P something like an ''exotic'' recipe :P anyway ...greetz from Greece guys :D

I've been to greece and agree that its never made with lettuce. Many of the salads I had there lacked character and freshness; just because you're in greece don't believe you're getting first class food on your plate. On the other hand, the feta and olive oil by themselves were first class. Oh, one more thing, most greeks in country were extremely rude, almost as bad as the french.

The American/ North American version uses lettuce and by the way its does not make a dramatic difference what so ever. in fact I love lettuce so I would put lettuce in any salad. plus lettuce is a great filler.

But when we give it a name like "Italian" or "Greek" and we are an official site, we have to be little more carefull and stick to the original. But of cource this is only my opinion. But this type of Greek salad, it is usally made in the summer when the tomatoes and cucumbers are in season, but not lettuce. As people in the last century did not grow lettuce in the summer when tomatoes were in season, this salad did not have this ingredient.

So when we say Greek Salad I think we have to stick to the original, because that's the beauty of this salad.

Greece is NOT an island and Greek salad is NOT made by these ingredients... You will need a couple of tomatoes, a cucumber, a red onion, Olive oil, some olives, some oregano and Feta cheese. You can also use some peppers for a better taste... But why don't you just come to Greece and taste the original one... You will love it!
