so ironic that at the beginning, he wast trying to get the soldiers trained how to fire the gun and at the end he fights them with swords along with the samurais.
@RumbitSwe Believe it or not, that's not Hollywood. The charge was a legitimate strategy employed up through the early 20th century, no matter the weapons your enemy had.
@Timedevour36 No it was not. A bayonet charge is intended to demoralize the enemy, to temporarily increase your soldiers morale, or to quickly overrun a position (such as a hill or stronghold) instead of standing still getting fired on; none of these criteria was fulfilled. To charge at a formation of men--who are especially trained in melee combat, whilst your soldiers are not--is not something a real (non-retarded) commander would do.
@RumbitSwe I really, really suggest you look up the Japanese in WWII. Even if the enemy is trained in melee combat, or if they had ranged weapons, the Japanese believed (still believe, maybe?) that up-close was the "honorable" way of fighting. You're looking at it from a non-Japanese perspective. Was it stupid? Yes. It was also the way they did it.
@Timedevour36 During WWII they wanted to go back to the old ways just like the Germans. In this era, though, it's all about going away from the past, evolving, etc. And if they were so keen on being "honorable" I don't think they'd be using artillery and gatling guns, now would they?
And the common folks used as soldiers don't give a flying saucer about anything but surviving. It's not like the soldiers were the ones deciding when they were supposed to fight "honorable".
Yep! Hollywood....Muskets at that time were effective up to 400m, and since this is loosely based on the "Battle of Hakodate" they would've been using French rifles which were to my understanding very accurate/reliable during that time.
Tom Cruise's character is also based on a real life French Officer (Jules Brunet)..... not American.
hmm out numbered, no firearms or artillery and fighting on a more modern and open conventional field of engagement and yet they killed over half of the enemy troops and broke their lines and caused their enemies to stand down while either making them deeply respect them or scaring the shit out of them.......I think the Samurai kicked some fucking ass and were awesome
Unfortunately, many Japanese were smiling contemptuously watching this movie.
Because we know in the 16th century battlefield, the Samurai is using guns and cannons as a usual weapon.some historians say that in the Sengoku period(16th-1615) ,half of the matchlock guns of the world was produced in Japan. And the main weapon of a samurai was the spear for close combat. Watching Kurosawa's film , you will have a better understanding about this.
im still suprised that this battle and event was based off a true event I respectfully honor the couragous samurai who fought to keep their ways alive, and in the end their ways still live today in the hearts of many japanese. In respect i namee myself in an online game
The movie was based historically on the real satsuma rebellion, sort of.
The samurais weren't gung-ho about swords and bows, they used firearms whenever they could. The conflict was more a tussle for power between both the imperial army and the remnants of the old shogunate. Simply put, both sides had guns, samurai and Tom Cruise should've been French.
@IZn0g0uDatAll You logic is flawed because u haven't seen the movie.. They r riflemen with one shot rifles so they were lucky to get a second shot so they were defensles
Anyway. That looked stupid. A modern army with riffle would have demolished samurai with swords without taking any loss at all. I haven't seen the movie, but it looked plain silly
@IZn0g0uDatAll There were diversions and other tactics used to disrupt the army lines of fire. Hence they were mostly disorganized when the samurai hit them.
@IZn0g0uDatAllthey are not even rifles they are using muskets. after every shot you would have to reload gunpowder, ram the bullet in the chamber with a iron stick. a musketeer was lucky if he could fire 4-5 times a minute. muskets weren't rifled in the barrel so they were INTENSELY INACCURATE. you had around a 50-75 yard range before the bullet gets diverted by resistance. assuming they are rifled .only 200-300 yards range. cavalry speeding towards this soldier at 60km per hr would ofc pwn them
@TheBaddy28 while you are right about the effectivness / ineffectifness of guns at that time, i think your point about cavalry is not quite true. actually, cavalry charges proved to be totally unusable against disciplined line infantry for the horses simply refuse to charge into a wall of bajonetts.
they simply turned or stopped. only attacking from the rear, the sides or into a demoralised or undisciplined force that scattered at the sight of the cav charge this proved effective
"Hollywood is crazy, Tom Cruise? Are you kidding me? Tom Cruise is the last Samurai? I can't wait for Hollywood to do my movie "The last nigger on earth" starring Tom Hanks."

I have dreamed of a unified japan, of a country strong and independent and modern. And now we have railroads, and cannons, and western clothing. But we cannot forget who we are.
@nozzer2002 Descedents of samurai communities did not take part again it was the imperial japanese that where the majority in ww2 their predaseccors are this army here in the black uniforms.
I myself am a practicer of AMEK, which are the historical fencing techcniques of europe. These techniques were lost due to the influence of the gun sadly even when they were as sophisticated, if not more, then the techniques used by the Samurai.
I think it's a pity that they were lost, but in those times Samurai used the sword to oppress their farmers. They were far from honourable most of the time.
Cinématographiquement, cette scène est un pur délice, quant aux cascades, il va sans dire qu'on ne peut qu'exprimer de l'admiration aux figurants, cascadeurs et autres ! Cette scène est magnifique.
I am a man, who was born too late. I come from Polish. I should have been born 400 years ago to fight for their country as the Hussar and I should die on the battlefield. Or be born 100 years ago and fought in World War 2 and killed in the Warsaw Uprising, in which no one has helped our country!
WHat are you guys tallking about samurai bows are better then those muskets 100% first they have longer range secend they shoote/kill faster those guners they dont even have armor for arows.Only thing why Japan used muskets/meathock is cuz they very easy to train solders with it.
@Nishkid641 This movie plainly showed that even a gun can be exploited in favor of the sword. I'm not saying it's a straight shot, but if you do it right, swords can beat guns. Keep in mind, you don't need to reload a sword.
@killu19 Now a days guns can carry more than 30 bullets i think 1 of those bullets will hit you. But mainly this movie is about Japan being evolve by modern technology made from the Europeans and the Western Society which they succeed cause now Japan is more evolve than any other country. But the samurai will always be the fierce warriors of Japan.
@killu19 and gun have most benefits against sword. Even though have to reload, but if you keep far distance, gun can beat the shit outta sword. Learn how not to come too close to the enemy will make sword useless. Remember that sword is only useful when you come closer to the enemy, and gun can kill anyone from far away.
The samurai were too exaggerated. Overestimated in Western samurai: the sword well, but, in the West geomsulin paensingboda weak. Western more great articles. Wonre Japan was a vassal state of China. Japan is a tributary of China since ancient times. Paensing>>> gumdo
@dltk56 True. Katanas does not cut through plate armor (Although at that time, no European sword could either, so armor plated knights are killed by being hit in an unarmored spot ie. Armpit/Neck with half swording), and a longsword can cleave easily right through Japanese armor.
Fuck man you literally started the video IMMEDIATELY after the greatest quote in the movie. Which is what I have been trying to find on youtube for forever. SRGETRTGRTGR;tghjeui;rolrgfoegklwerhgowhegoshnkgeadhnf;aklwhrtio
Katsumoto: "What happened to the warriors at Thermopylae?"
Every time I see this, I cry, because I see the ones that I love so much, the unique Japanese soldier, the Samurai, die in the battlefield against the imperialistic evolved Japan. Every time I practise my kendo, I just think about this battle, and especially about Ujio since he can take bullets and be ok.
Evolving technology, science and economies can upgrade as much as they want, but there's something they'll never be able to advance in, a word called: "Honour"
@ShizukuSangoST That is exactly what happens when people don't move on(change). Just remember this bullets can't kill everything. Well WW2 was corrupt (Honour isn't everything until you know what it is).
@ShizukuSangoST Truer words have never been spoken. After watching both this and the old 80's show Visionaries, I actually wish for the idea of science and technology coming to an end and people re-embracing the old ideals of human culture such as honor, warrior discipline and compassion.
I never understood why Japan today hates their traditions so much. When I say that, I mean that the people of the young generation either see them as a waste or unneeded.
In all respect, you can have "honor" and fight with a gun. Some cultures might think "Honor" is eating the person you killed out of respect so their body is not a waste... To Japanese Samurai "Honor" was dying in battle. Some people might think, "Honor" was running away when you knew you would die so your wife won't have to raised your 2 month old daughter alone. It just depends. This movie is obviously for the Samurai, but don't be fooled, I bet there were many great individuals on both sides
You are right, but there is nothing as much a symbol for honor and selflessness like the traditional samurai.
To live by the sword brings traditional values back again. I greatly respect honorable people wielding guns, but i admire those who live by the code of the samurai.
@ChamorruWarrior I agree. There were actually no real winners in this fight I think. Both sides fought fervently for a cause they believed in and few of the samurai actually thought they were coming back.
@1169Timothy maybe not the nights of europe were trained in weapons and hand to hand but the samurai had a better martial arts training agenda i believe your familiar with jujitsu? It was used by them to force your oppenent on the ground then slit his throat easy to do to a knight due to heavy armor.
@aceofaces18 Knights were also trained in hand to hand combat and even combat with staffs. Knights could grapple in much the same way as some MMA styles teach today and it was not easy toppling a Knight contrary to popular myth. (Samurai Armour and Plate Armour weigh the same, only that plate Armour has better weight distribution). Still through i do not believe that they would have done better, Knights in this situation would have mounted up and rode head first into the rifle fire.
@1169Timothy I'm biased for knights, but I think a good shock cavalry charge of either samurai or knights could win, if only there wasn't steep terrain that prevented that. Neither were oblivious to new technology, because their armor evolved in both cases to be more bulletproof against matchlock guns and they began to use guns themselves. These civil war rifles are too powerful against armor, so I think an infantry charge couldn't work. Maybe a horse charge would provide a necessary advantage.
@deathbyazure I agree if all of them were cavalry they would have won the battle. However it is not that the terrain was bad for cav, it is that not all of them could be supplied with horses.
@1169Timothy I forgot the reason the samurai chose the terrain in the first place, in order to avoid the cannons and Gatling guns. Against riflemen alone the cavalry could stand a chance, but if artillery could be brought to bear against the charge then there's no way in heck it could work. I guess insufficient horses would kill their chances too. If we forced knights to work with the conditions the samurai have in the movie, they would do just about as well, which is to say they'd lose.
@ChamorruWarrior As is shown in the end of this scene: the horror of all those lost lives... I'm pro-Samurai, but the Imperial Japanese Army wasn't all bad - at least, until Emperor Meiji died. Afterwards, it probably declined...
@ChamorruWarrior i respect your opinnion and agree with your comment on family but there's no honor with firearms. If there was ever a greater failure than mankinds creation of warfare it was making it impersonal, cheap, easy and a mass produced warmachine. Did you know in WW1: 1 in 10 soldiers saw their killer? MG's shooting people down. If you are going to die or NEED to kill soldiers if not with your bare hands you should atleast look them in the eyes and recognize the loss of life.
As a human being who can reason, I'd rather not kill someone at all. That being said if I HAVE to kill someone, then as a human being I want to kill that person in the most effective way possible. The point of "honor" you speak of comes from WHY you are killing someone, not WHAT you killed them with and how close you were to that person. You can murder innocent people with swords, and save little girls with guns. Or vice versa. It's not the weapon, it's the intention behind the weapon.
@ChamorruWarrior Well good if you can choose alternatives to violence but if you are required to kill someone for whatever BS reason atleast give the person dying an "honorable" and "dignified" death. let them die giving absolutely every ounce of strength for ensure survival if their not going to live. At least traditional warfare was honest and fair. Efficiency doesn't make it right, it just cuts corners and makes murder for humans impersonal. A liars tool and a cowards means.
I would disagree with a lot of that. Shooting someone is personal, and you do think about the people you kill in war, my uncle has nightmares and PTSD from the Vietnam war. It simply depends on your point of view though. In your mind shooting someone from far away with a gun is not honor. But in my mind, the only reason I would do something like that is to defend myself or my family etc My sense of honor would not be what weapon I had, but the fact that I have to defend my family, any way I can
@ChamorruWarrior One thinks it's personal if it's one or two or if you have been shot or shot at. if it's just kill after kill it all becomes numbers and human life becomes less valuable at a distance. Vietnam PTSD would more likely be due to IED's. The number one link to PTSD is explosives because it's number one purpose it to cause fear and disorganize the enemy (well that and destroy machines). i'll respectfully agree to disagree since our sense of honor is why vs how.
I don't think I can agree with you as many of my family members from Guam (Pacific island) were murdered, tortured and raped by the Japanese who had a sense of this "honor" where being close with a bayonet is "honorable" while my people fought any way they could to save themselves and their loved ones from the "honorable" Japanese soilders. The Japanese liked to be close to us to murder us and rape our women, this does not make what they did to my island and thousands of others "honorable"
@ChamorruWarrior look i do not care for Japan now or the culture over the past 142 years. There's nothing i can say about your family to make it better but you make this about Japan as a timeless whole. Japan lost it's honor after 1870 so if they killed innocents after i will not defend ashiguru with rifles who are shameful. I'm talking about the samurai, followers of Bushido and medieval combat. it is that time period of the culture i love not their decay centuries later.
I"m sorry to say this, but in reality Samurai were often not really that honourable. You had great examples of those that fought with honour, no question, but sadly Samurai also felt themselves oftne superior then their peasant subjects, and were known to cut of hands of their subjects due to corruption of power.
When the gun came, the farmers were actually able to do something back for a change, even if it was a short period, I mean before it was banned.
@ChamorruWarrior Do not delve into the sad events of our past brother, yes we had our share of atrocities by the Japanese as I am from Kiribati but we need to accept the fact that bad people come from all strains of races from across the world. The Japanese who invaded our islands were not Samurai's if I may add,They were narrow minded soldiers brain washed by warlords fed by greed and corruption for the benefit of their own interests. Completely diff to what is shown here...
I know, I do not hate the Japanese, or the Samurai. In fact I can speak basic Japanese and am still learning. Japanese culture is very fun. But my example was not that Japanese people are bad, it was that although those soldiers thought it was "honorable" to be close and stab someone rather than shoot them, their intention was nothing of "honor". My great grandfather used a machine gun (One of three that Guam had) to defend his wife, kids and friends. Honor is not HOW you kill, but WHY.
@ChamorruWarrior Well I guess that puts me in an embarrassing position :P ;; I assumed you where conveying a sense of hatred towards the Japanese as you brought up the unnecessary bloodshed upon our people ;; Indeed your opinion on how honor is upheld or displayed is very justifiable and I can say nothing against that :) ;; I just ask for your pardon over my wrongful assumptions, Your ancestors smile down on your Great Grandfather's bravery and honor.
@ChamorruWarrior it's both the action and the intention; you can't have one without the other when it comes to manslaughter or murder. In such a civilized age we made warfare effective and efficient but we made people weak in conformity. Unattached and apathetic; they make warfare into a game to make it look cool. Sending boys with the wrong ideas just repeats the cycle. The worst tools we ever invented becoming a social norm and an acceptance as "necessary evil".
@ChamorruWarrior woht you say is Correckt from, a Human Eays not from Bushido, the Warrior loos hes Honor hes Respekt, and hes Charakter daht can you now see in the Wars.
it makes me cry to. I'm from Bulgaria but i respect the japanese loyalty and the way they think! If a deputy makes a mistake or a gaffe he can kill himself from shame in Bulgaria he will smile and act like nothing happened.
@767nutter , what did you thinl they did before they had modern guns?. Fire volleys of arrows at the enemy the same way that is what they did. Sorry, technology cahnged & nmade the bravery of individual soldiers futile mostly in the grand scheme of modern war. .
@Wolfen443 i was not saying war is funny at all, it was a light joke about a film that isnt even based on true events. also the way you come across is that you dont believe in war at all, so why are you on this page with this clip? stop trying to wind me up by exagerating my posts.

The rebellion this movie was based on was great! The imperial army gets some practice and the Samurai get to die in battle(a great honor).

@MajorKoenig4718 and every kid knows that a sword can never fight against gun. Learn to have strategic mind if you have virgins.
Nishkid641 5 months ago
@Nishkid641 This movie plainly showed that even a gun can be exploited in favor of the sword. I'm not saying it's a straight shot, but if you do it right, swords can beat guns. Keep in mind, you don't need to reload a sword.
killu19 5 months ago
@killu19 Now a days guns can carry more than 30 bullets i think 1 of those bullets will hit you. But mainly this movie is about Japan being evolve by modern technology made from the Europeans and the Western Society which they succeed cause now Japan is more evolve than any other country. But the samurai will always be the fierce warriors of Japan.
Thegreatdave1234 5 months ago
@Thegreatdave1234 My point is that there is a weakness to every strength. The world can learn something from the Samurai, though.
killu19 5 months ago
@killu19 True.
Thegreatdave1234 5 months ago
@killu19 and gun have most benefits against sword. Even though have to reload, but if you keep far distance, gun can beat the shit outta sword. Learn how not to come too close to the enemy will make sword useless. Remember that sword is only useful when you come closer to the enemy, and gun can kill anyone from far away.

dltk56 5 months ago
@dltk56 True. Katanas does not cut through plate armor (Although at that time, no European sword could either, so armor plated knights are killed by being hit in an unarmored spot ie. Armpit/Neck with half swording), and a longsword can cleave easily right through Japanese armor.

When I say that, I mean that the people of the young generation either see them as a waste or unneeded.
sadlobster1 4 months ago
In all respect, you can have "honor" and fight with a gun. Some cultures might think "Honor" is eating the person you killed out of respect so their body is not a waste... To Japanese Samurai "Honor" was dying in battle. Some people might think, "Honor" was running away when you knew you would die so your wife won't have to raised your 2 month old daughter alone. It just depends. This movie is obviously for the Samurai, but don't be fooled, I bet there were many great individuals on both sides
ChamorruWarrior 4 months ago 23
@ChamorruWarrior
You are right, but there is nothing as much a symbol for honor and selflessness like the traditional samurai.
To live by the sword brings traditional values back again. I greatly respect honorable people wielding guns, but i admire those who live by the code of the samurai.
Rivannous 2 months ago
@ChamorruWarrior I agree. There were actually no real winners in this fight I think. Both sides fought fervently for a cause they believed in and few of the samurai actually thought they were coming back.
Ragnarblackmane12 2 months ago
This is just a honest Question. Do you think that Knights would have done better in such a situation?
1169Timothy 2 months ago
@1169Timothy maybe not the nights of europe were trained in weapons and hand to hand but the samurai had a better martial arts training agenda i believe your familiar with jujitsu? It was used by them to force your oppenent on the ground then slit his throat easy to do to a knight due to heavy armor.
aceofaces18 2 months ago
@aceofaces18 Knights were also trained in hand to hand combat and even combat with staffs. Knights could grapple in much the same way as some MMA styles teach today and it was not easy toppling a Knight contrary to popular myth. (Samurai Armour and Plate Armour weigh the same, only that plate Armour has better weight distribution). Still through i do not believe that they would have done better, Knights in this situation would have mounted up and rode head first into the rifle fire.
1169Timothy 2 months ago
@1169Timothy I'm biased for knights, but I think a good shock cavalry charge of either samurai or knights could win, if only there wasn't steep terrain that prevented that. Neither were oblivious to new technology, because their armor evolved in both cases to be more bulletproof against matchlock guns and they began to use guns themselves. These civil war rifles are too powerful against armor, so I think an infantry charge couldn't work. Maybe a horse charge would provide a necessary advantage.
deathbyazure 2 months ago
@deathbyazure I agree if all of them were cavalry they would have won the battle. However it is not that the terrain was bad for cav, it is that not all of them could be supplied with horses.
1169Timothy 2 months ago
@1169Timothy I forgot the reason the samurai chose the terrain in the first place, in order to avoid the cannons and Gatling guns. Against riflemen alone the cavalry could stand a chance, but if artillery could be brought to bear against the charge then there's no way in heck it could work. I guess insufficient horses would kill their chances too. If we forced knights to work with the conditions the samurai have in the movie, they would do just about as well, which is to say they'd lose.
deathbyazure 2 months ago
@ChamorruWarrior As is shown in the end of this scene: the horror of all those lost lives... I'm pro-Samurai, but the Imperial Japanese Army wasn't all bad - at least, until Emperor Meiji died. Afterwards, it probably declined...
JustFlemishMe 2 months ago
@ChamorruWarrior i respect your opinnion and agree with your comment on family but there's no honor with firearms. If there was ever a greater failure than mankinds creation of warfare it was making it impersonal, cheap, easy and a mass produced warmachine. Did you know in WW1: 1 in 10 soldiers saw their killer? MG's shooting people down. If you are going to die or NEED to kill soldiers if not with your bare hands you should atleast look them in the eyes and recognize the loss of life.
TheUnrealStudios 1 month ago
As a human being who can reason, I'd rather not kill someone at all. That being said if I HAVE to kill someone, then as a human being I want to kill that person in the most effective way possible. The point of "honor" you speak of comes from WHY you are killing someone, not WHAT you killed them with and how close you were to that person. You can murder innocent people with swords, and save little girls with guns. Or vice versa. It's not the weapon, it's the intention behind the weapon.
ChamorruWarrior 1 month ago
@ChamorruWarrior Well good if you can choose alternatives to violence but if you are required to kill someone for whatever BS reason atleast give the person dying an "honorable" and "dignified" death. let them die giving absolutely every ounce of strength for ensure survival if their not going to live. At least traditional warfare was honest and fair. Efficiency doesn't make it right, it just cuts corners and makes murder for humans impersonal. A liars tool and a cowards means.
TheUnrealStudios 1 month ago
I would disagree with a lot of that. Shooting someone is personal, and you do think about the people you kill in war, my uncle has nightmares and PTSD from the Vietnam war. It simply depends on your point of view though. In your mind shooting someone from far away with a gun is not honor. But in my mind, the only reason I would do something like that is to defend myself or my family etc My sense of honor would not be what weapon I had, but the fact that I have to defend my family, any way I can
ChamorruWarrior 1 month ago
@ChamorruWarrior One thinks it's personal if it's one or two or if you have been shot or shot at. if it's just kill after kill it all becomes numbers and human life becomes less valuable at a distance. Vietnam PTSD would more likely be due to IED's. The number one link to PTSD is explosives because it's number one purpose it to cause fear and disorganize the enemy (well that and destroy machines). i'll respectfully agree to disagree since our sense of honor is why vs how.
TheUnrealStudios 1 month ago
I don't think I can agree with you as many of my family members from Guam (Pacific island) were murdered, tortured and raped by the Japanese who had a sense of this "honor" where being close with a bayonet is "honorable" while my people fought any way they could to save themselves and their loved ones from the "honorable" Japanese soilders. The Japanese liked to be close to us to murder us and rape our women, this does not make what they did to my island and thousands of others "honorable"
ChamorruWarrior 1 month ago
@ChamorruWarrior look i do not care for Japan now or the culture over the past 142 years. There's nothing i can say about your family to make it better but you make this about Japan as a timeless whole. Japan lost it's honor after 1870 so if they killed innocents after i will not defend ashiguru with rifles who are shameful. I'm talking about the samurai, followers of Bushido and medieval combat. it is that time period of the culture i love not their decay centuries later.
TheUnrealStudios 1 month ago
@TheUnrealStudios

@ChamorruWarrior But indeed... Forgive but don't Forget Che'lu :)
KiRiBaTiSOUL 1 month ago
I know, I do not hate the Japanese, or the Samurai. In fact I can speak basic Japanese and am still learning. Japanese culture is very fun. But my example was not that Japanese people are bad, it was that although those soldiers thought it was "honorable" to be close and stab someone rather than shoot them, their intention was nothing of "honor". My great grandfather used a machine gun (One of three that Guam had) to defend his wife, kids and friends. Honor is not HOW you kill, but WHY.
ChamorruWarrior 1 month ago
@ChamorruWarrior Well I guess that puts me in an embarrassing position :P ;; I assumed you where conveying a sense of hatred towards the Japanese as you brought up the unnecessary bloodshed upon our people ;; Indeed your opinion on how honor is upheld or displayed is very justifiable and I can say nothing against that :) ;; I just ask for your pardon over my wrongful assumptions, Your ancestors smile down on your Great Grandfather's bravery and honor.
KiRiBaTiSOUL 1 month ago
@ChamorruWarrior "Out of chaos and terror rises valor and bravery."
KiRiBaTiSOUL 1 month ago
@ChamorruWarrior it's both the action and the intention; you can't have one without the other when it comes to manslaughter or murder. In such a civilized age we made warfare effective and efficient but we made people weak in conformity. Unattached and apathetic; they make warfare into a game to make it look cool. Sending boys with the wrong ideas just repeats the cycle. The worst tools we ever invented becoming a social norm and an acceptance as "necessary evil".
