Yes, but he probably had safety glasses on in case of the accidental hit to the face (Can't look at it for more than a second or two or the glasses would start to burn/melt)

Pretty easy to wreck some eyes at very close range if you focused it.

You can't shine this kind of laser for that long, it would destroy it if you used it for more than 5 minutes without letting it cool off (Usually around 5 max is what you use it for).

And no, the smoke adds to the effect, but the pointer itself is strong enough to be seen perfectly without it. The smoke just adds a cool effect to the laser and makes it more visible in most cases.
