My shih tzu would do this very rarely and I thought it was a seizure type of thing... now my cockapoo does it (a few times a day) so glad to know it is just a reverse sneeze!
My Daisey May does the same thing! She does it when we r outside walking and she sniffs in high grass or weeds! I thought she just kept getting stuff in her nose cuz her nose doesn't leave the ground! I guess it's the beagle in her?
CUP THE PALM OF YOUR HAND OVER THEIR NOSE - it works same as having a human breath into a paperbag when they are hyperventilating. Have been using this technique for 5 yrs on my 3 Boston Terriers...and it stops within secs without fail. The rubbing throat thing does nothing - only adds to dogs panic...the more you try to soothe them, the more they think something is wrong.
I do the same thing with my morkies when it happens to them except I hold the top of their nose so they can open their mouths. It really does help. :)
I have rubbed my cane corso' throat and that does not work. Neither does lifting her up behind her front legs. I wont open her mouth, as that souns scary to me...too easy to get accidentally bit. I did pinch her nostrils like in this video VERY briefly, not even a second...and it stopped immedietly. It may be "normal" but when her eyes are popping out because she cant breath then pinching her nose for a microsecond I dont think hurts her. Its the only thing that worked.
My dog does this too once in a while. One day, a couple years ago, it started happening every few minutes, so we had to take her to the vet and he gave her antibiotics for it. I don't know if that was stopped it but fortunately it did stop. It was very scary.
My puggle did this in the middle of the night and woke me up and I was terrified. I tried to give him water and everything. Eventually he stopped but it was so scary to witness! Thanks for the information. Now, I know not to freak out when he does it again. :)
My Westie does this sometimes when she pulls on the lead or excessively sniffs the carpets. I sit with her and encourage her to stay still and relax till it passes.
My dog just did this for the second time that I've had him in a year, and it scared the piss out of me! Thank you SOOO much for posting the video, at least I know what I read on the internet about reverse sneazing is in fact what he has, and I don't need to have a heart attack or rush him to the vet. THANK YOU! <3
I am a vet, and I have mini Dachshunds that do this; it's called reverse sneezing (NOT a collapsing trachea, which is much more serious). Please do not administer anything by mouth as they may aspirate into their lungs (some suggestions on here to give honey, etc.). I simply rub their throats gently as the swallowing motion interrupts the reverse sneeze and doesn't interfere with air flow. It is hard for owners to watch as dogs look a little panicky.
my dog started doing it when she was alone with my mom , and my mom did not do anything about it , so my dog eventually started wobbeling around, and coldnt' stay on its legs, because it had a hard time breathing. Its because they panic , so when they get a seassure like this , make sure that they focus on something else
Thanks for posting. My dog just started doing this and I got so nervous I called the vet. He said it sounded like a reverse sneeze, but to get on here and look up some videos to see if it was...and it's definately the same thing. What a relief!
We have a morkie (Mona Lisa) and we give her olive oil to help her calm down. It's really scary when this happens. I still panick a little when she does this.
I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is about two and a half years old. Because of her squshy type face, she does this occasionally. What I do to help it, is gently massage her neck in a downward motion. (:
wow, im soooo glad its nothing serious...my dog suddenly started doing that and we were freaking out. all i knew was that massaging his throat downwards seemed to help.
It can also be behaviourally induced so I would avoid paying the dog too much attention during the episodes (as scary as it sounds) as you may encourage it to associate the behaviour with affection and hence, it will do it more frequently - weird condition
My 4-year old Pekingese does the reverse sneeze every now and then; do pretty much the same thing to get him to stop, but I put the pad of my thumb over both his nostrils and use my fingers on the same hand to scratch his ear while holding him against my chest...doesn't work without me babying him a little, he's such an attention hog lol
i have a 5 month old boxer and this happen while he was eating i wasnt sure if he was choking or doing this.. so could i just rubb his neck while he is doing this or ... ?
The best way that I have found to stop reverse sneezing is to get the dog to swallow, either by rubbing their throat or offering something really tasty.
We are babysitting our Puggle Granddog and she did a reverse sneeze for the first time. We thought she was going to die. She stopped after 5 minutes but it was scary not knowing what was happening. We thought she was choking on something. We'll try the brief nose pinch technique next time it happens. Thanks for the info.
I took my labrador to the vet today because he had a episode today and sure enough it was reverse sneeze. SCARY when it happened it lasted almost a minute and I had no idea what was happening. It's comforting to hear other stories and that this was normal thank you for your video
OMG i panicked when my dog did this.. i thought she was going to die... i was patting her chest and trying to rub her belly and her throat, i had no idea what was happening.i also thought she has something in her throat or anything.. i was going to take her to the vet and she stopped.. .and went back to sleep... she has done it twice since and it still makes me panick a lil when she does it... have a look at her on my channel... she even takes on a click beetle and the beetle lives !
Our mini-pin has been doing this for a week now. She will get little episodes of it. I thought she had something caught n her nose, we also suspected allergies. We took her to the vet today to get her checked cuz she used to sneeze regularly on occasion, but never the reverse type.
My dog has been doing this, and last night it just kept happening and I couldn't get it to stop right away. I'm so glad to hear this will not kill her. I am taking her to the vet on Monday, but I'm relieved that this is not an emergency. I was so scared. :( Thanks so very much for posting this video!!
I am so glad I read this. Like so many others, I was worried about what might be wrong. We knew a woman who's little dog had a collapsing trachea and I was terrified it might be something like that.
When our dachshund does this I don't pick her up but I do pet her and talk to her, telling her it will be alright. I would never pinch her nose like that though. Seems to me it would only aggravate the situation.
@Stef9521 Thanks Doc for the info. We just lightly pinch his nose for a moment. We only do it when it lasts over a minute. Sometimes he will start and do two snorts and stop. So we wait and do it as a last resort. It is so funny that it is such a mystery and so many vets have different views on it. It is frightening for dog owners. Thanks again. :)
@Stef9521 I just take and gently rub the dog's throat. It doesn't always stop it 100%, but it does calm it down significantly. Talking to him and getting his attention while he does it also helps.
@Stef9521 but you are only pinching for a nano second...what are the negative impacts of cutting off that supply for a nano second? Just curious as this method is the ONLY thing that works for my girl. Massaging the throat does not work on her.
wow.. this is funny because my dog just starting doing this maybe a week ago and freaked the crap out of me!!! it really crazy to see it so common.. and i also noticed this is happening to alot of other people during this season.. hence all the new comments.. is it a seasonal thing? cold? thanks for that nose trick.. will try
My puggle has done the very same thing since I've had her! I had no idea what it was. I saw another dog do it and did a search on Youtube, but hearing another puggle do it, sounds just like my dog. It's nothing to be concerned about?
Thanks for posting this! My pug does this occasionally. I finally recognized what it is, so when it happens to her, I just talk to her in a soothing voice, telling her she's ok, and it will stop. She usually will relax and it stops without my having to do anything else, and I think it keeps her from panicking.

You're supposed to massage the throat to relax the dog's muscles, although sometimes dogs whip their heads to much and you risk hitting their throats. But you're also supposed to plug the nostrils (by either pinching gently or covering the snout) so that the dog is forced to breath out of his/her mouth.
