I'm all for protesting the NSM, but this was a terrible display on the part of the Anti-crowd.
These people beat up a homeless man (shirtless guy, with no Nazi tattoos). His demeanor (probably mentally unstable) and the garbage bag he was carrying, which probably contained his stuff, should have been a clue as to who he was.
The other person was holding a sign that said:
"Christianity=Paganism=Heathen= (swastika symbol, i.e. Nazism)
The guy had nazi tattoos which you can see from pictures (a swastika on the left upper breast and the SS bolts on the right) He went into the crowd to instigate coming from the Police HQ across the street. He may have been unstable or whatever but the fact is he had nazi tattoos and he went in the crowd to instigate. My guess is the guy had gotten out of jail due too the bag and the wristbands which look like what you might get in jail. Think before you speak!
There's a close-up pic of the homeless guy at the OnePeoplesProject website. I don't see the tattoos you're referring to. Also, look for the video "KKK rally Los Angeles" by MeatMeier, which shows the whole incident as it unfolded. Yes he was antagonizing, but they should've been observant enough to see he was unstable and let him alone or have a cop escort him out of the area.

He starts arguing with a guy in an anti racist shirt and then start yelling about his 1st amendment rights again like I have seen at other rallies from right wingers. He didn't portray himself very well so it was very much his fault.
