Bird only averaged 1 more APG for his career than MJ. Jordan's best season for APG is higher than Bird's best. Mj averaged 31.2 PPG, .558 fg%, 6.6 RPG, 11.4 APG, 2.8 SPG, 1.4 BPG in the 1991 finals against Magic. Jordan could be as good a passer or better than Bird if he needed to, but considering he was the greatest scorer of all time its no surprise he averaged less assists than Bird. After 88, Bird couldn't hang but from 85-88, Larry was about the only guy in the L that could match Jordan shot for shot and actually outscore him a lot of times plus actually win the games. And the greatest individual skill is hard to judge b/c MJ didn't do the same things as well as Bird and Magic. It really comes down to preference. But if basketball were 1 on 1 I'd take MJ, but its still 5 on 5. So I'd take the other 2 for that reason. The ONLY team that the bulls faced that was up to par in the Finals was the '93 suns. The 2nd best team was the '91 lakers.

If Bird stayed healthy MJ wouldn't have advance that year. If MJ was drafted in 79 with Bird & Magic, MJ wouldn't have 6 titles. Bird & Magic were so good they wouldn't allow that.

Larry Bird was a different kind of player than Jordan, you can't compare them. Jordan did awesome things on the court, most of the time putting the spotlight on himself. Bird was a team player, he helped the team with his passing. If you know something about basketball then you'll realize that the offense that outscored the Jordan's Bulls during the '80s were run by Bird's passing game making abilities.

Bird only averaged 1 more APG for his career than MJ. Jordan's best season for APG is higher than Bird's best. Mj averaged 31.2 PPG, .558 fg%, 6.6 RPG, 11.4 APG, 2.8 SPG, 1.4 BPG in the 1991 finals against Magic. Jordan could be as good a passer or better than Bird if he needed to, but considering he was the greatest scorer of all time its no surprise he averaged less assists than Bird. MJ could create his own shot a lot better than Bird so he didnt need to pass as often.

First of all your talking about 2 diff eras in NBA history.... Bird was the whos who in the 80's along with Magic.... When it comes to 92 on MJ is was and will always be king.... BUT would MJ have been where he was/is now without Bird/Johnson..... I think not, nor would the NBA.... It would have went bankrupt if not for Bird/Johnson.... Is MJ overall better in the books..... YES but pay respect to Larry legend and Magic for that matter for paving the way because No Larry/Magic= No Jordan

After 88, Bird couldn't hang but from 85-88, Larry was about the only guy in the L that could match Jordan shot for shot and actually outscore him a lot of times plus actually win the games. Adrian Dantley or someone like him maybe could score with Jordan but they weren't dominant teams unlike the Celts of that era.

You'll notice that everytime in these vids, Bird and Jordan trade highlights, but Bird's team always wins. That's what winners do. That's what playmakers do. Jordan was just an insatiable ball hog that was more than happy to get out of the stacked 80s and into the watered down 90s.

@folkrockman You forgot rebounds, assists, FT%, 3PT%, blocks per game, and basketball I. Q. was slightly better than MJ and they both had the same FG% at 50%. So if MJ is better it was b/c of his Defense and not much else. The NBA is 5 on 5 not 1 on 1. So I'd take Larry or Magic for that reason.

@TheJman2011 Right is that why Mike didn't start winning until Magic and Bird retired....Jordan never beat a healthy/or young Magic or Larry. MJ was slightly better at scoring than Bird, but they shot the same FG 50% and MJ averaged only 6ppg more. but Larry was WAY better at EVERY other aspect of the game. It comes down to preference...I'd take Bird or Magic. Bird slightly over even Magic for me in terms of individual skill.

@usnate1 the young Michael Jordan, like any other player had to build up his body, and become more skilled/experienced in the NBA before winning. Especially since he had no team to back him. U say he never won til people like Bird/Magic retired or got sick...but Jordan still had a lot weaker TEAM and Jordan still dominated. U say you'd take Bird Magic then Jordan...you must mean the young Jordan in the 80's because the championship winning Jordan has the greatest individual skill...EVER!!!

@jkblackburn1911 Actually in the 80's Jordan had his best seasons, scoring titles were there and the DPOY. And the greatest individual skill is hard to judge b/c MJ didn't do the same things as well as Bird and Magic. It really comes down to preference. But if basketball were 1 on 1 I'd take MJ, but its still 5 on 5. So I'd take the other 2 for that reason. The ONLY team that the bulls faced that was up to par in the Finals was the '93 suns. The 2nd best team was the '91 lakers.

@jkblackburn1911 Bird missed most of the 89 season due to injury and the Celtics finished 42-40 without him. Following seaon (1990) Bird returns. The Celtics were dominating the East and started off with a 31-4 record. Bird got hurt and the Celtics went down hill, including losing 9 of their last 10 without him. If Bird stayed healthy MJ wouldn't have advance that year. If MJ was drafted in 79 with Bird & Magic, MJ wouldn't have 6 titles. Bird & Magic were so good they wouldn't allow that.

@jkblackburn1911 I attended a game in the old Boston Garden. It was Celtics vs Bulls regular season game. During that game the Bulls frontcourt got into foul trouble so they put MJ on Bird for an entire quarter. MJ had no trouble scoring, however Bird had no trouble scoring either. The difference was Bird was killing MJ everywhere else. MJ couldn't grab a board and 2 of Bird's passes fooled MJ so bad he looked like an idiot. Btw..in that quarter Bird only missed one shot.

@waff1eirontmacsplat I agree that Jordan is an infinitely better player than Russell. Russell propably would have some success defensively against Jordan. He was mobile and did not bite on fakes easily. He is probably comparable with Rodman in that sense. The game evolved so much in those decades that you cannot compare him to modern players. But Russell was the most destructive defensive player in his time and his opponents were psyched out by him.
