@mikkaramies Im not a linguist nor a native speaker, myself, but I think I can give some explanation. There are 3 ways of expressing here subjunctive.

1. "would be a carrot" - this contains the possibility that the statement could become true in the future. As the song obviously can not become a carrot, its wrong in this case. use would be e.g. "If I would study harder, I would pass my exam"

2. "was a carrot" - implies that ist is very unlikely that the statement becomes true.
