  • "NOT SOUND AT ALL!! WE NEVER SPEAK A WORD!..."

  • With subtly that would leave Adam West speechless......

  • How can you not smile while watching this,

  • Kevin Kline sure knows how to lunge.

  • That guy has some muscles in his legs.

  • 3:18 - They rolled a natural 1 on their move silently checks.

  • friends and i did this down our high schools main hallway.... our eng teachers joined us lol

  • Appalling. Gilbert & Sullivan would turn in thier graves

  • @491mayflower And how would you know that? Have you ever met Gilbert and Sullivan? You can't possibly know their reaction.

  • @srowley6 Oh dear , your comment really does show how woefully ignorant you are about the G&S operettas. Do a little research into the G&S productions

  • @491mayflower The whole comedic point of the song is the irony between the subject matter and its execution.

  • Tarantara, tarantara!!!!!!!!!!! Gal is Pi π

  • Did the producers realize how silly this is?

  • my friend dani and i love this song. best show ever.

  • 2:29 to 2:40 look at the pirate king, our grandchildren will be doing that move in the future as gangsta's

  • 7 people were burglers who tried to copy this and were caught

  • I actually managed to sneak up on a friend of mine while singing this very song at the top of my lungs.

  • yes indeed. it is a bunch of pirates singing an over-the-top boisterous and loud song about being stealthy. that is the joke. This probably isn't how it was choreographed in Gilbert and Sullivan's day, but I'm certain it was at least this big and loud. and in "The Model of a modern major general", the joke *is* in fact that he knows very little about soldiering and war.

  • A musical number... Not the smartest people. XD

  • Kevin kiline=Gold performance in this movie

  • Oh man, Kline and his boots :3 *fans self*

  • this is the bard song that makes you stealthy

  • I love this tune!

  • This is my middle school play! I'm the Pirate King FTW!!!

  • 7 people are jealous of Kevin's moves

  • THE PIRATE KING IS A QWOP MASTER!!

  • Which version of Pirates of Penzace is this? Thanks

  • @1Celebrindor The 1985 film version with Kevin Kline.

  • @1Celebrindor The DVD version. Derp

  • i wanna "walk" like Kevin Kline

  • Kevin Kline has the quads of a god.

  • i'm eighteen and i used to love this film as a child i used to watch it all the time when it was my turn to say what to watch, i have to say, after all these years... it still makes me laugh.

  • @rosiemany I love this film too I watched it since I was 3 and would buy the DVD at 24

  • The guys with the yellow script have pretty easy lyrics to remember.

  • i'm in this play! i'm a pirate so i sing this!

  • Let's vary piracy with a little burglary.

Fantastic. and thanks for the lyrics. It's always been hard to make them out.

  • The constant 'Ra's' that are going by the policemen just top this piece. It's so funny xD

  • Kevin Kline must have totally blown his knees out doing this night after night on stage.

  • Just prior to this sequence, they crashed their ship into the trees along the shoreline, causing a terrific crash (and causing the cowardly policemen to hide).

  • just wanted to say thanks for posting these clips. The recent Tony awards started me remembering shows I was able to see. I was at opening night of "Pirates" when it moved to Broadway, and "With cat-like tread" brought the audience to their screaming, stomping, cheering feet. One of the most exciting nights, ever. (And I was able to share with people in the office without trying to wheedle them into watching the entire movie)

  • dancing like that must have tiring them out

  • I've watched this like fourteen times in the last few days. This is the most epic thing ever.I love the way they press their noses against each other and scream in one another's faces.

  • Pirates of Penzance: With Cat Like Tread

  • been listening to this a lot..........accidently had an outburst at school........started singing and dancing down the corridor ......... not many friends left looooool

  • @myskylaughs You lack the right friends then, I would buy you a beer for that. The world needs more spontaneous musical numbers.

  • @myskylaughs wow.

  • I love this song, I'm a pirate right now, and this is the best song ever. (Mostly because we have a weeping angel from Dr.Who in the abby.)

  • @E123OMEGArobot Umm... 1) why is there a weeping angel in an abby? and 2) what does that have to do with being a pirate?

  • @SaphiraSpirit 1) An abby is like or near a cemetery, so a giant tombstone with a scary angel would be a nice flair( we have a lot of nerds around here.) and 2) I was merely mentioning something cool our production was doing, if I could say all the badass stuff that being a pirate entails, well I'd run out of characters. To each his own.

  • i was in this play and i was a pirate! i got to attack the pirate king but my sword broke halfway through the play!

  • i did the sound for this for a musical i was in

  • ...I played a pirate for the first act of the musical, then the police sergeant for the second half. Well, -A- police sergeant. There were two of us.

  • ...I played a pirate for the first act of the musical, then the police sergeant for the second half. Well, -A- police sergeant. There were two of us. :p

  • I think it needs an encore... only LOUDER... AND MUCH SLOWER!

  • Love it, love it, love it. Thank you. :))

  • I remember perfoming this about a year ago! So much fun :D

  • @christytheawesome haha i no rite!! we just performed it last month :) what role where you??

  • @Notster07 I played Ruth! :) Who did you play?

  • @christytheawesome REALLY!!?? pro much! "oh pardon Frederic pardon!" XD i was just one of the silly police men but still it was so fun! even though we hurt ourselves...ALOT XD tarantara!

  • @Notster07 Oh really! I love the song forward on the foe! I wish I couldve been in it :/ haha

  • I wish this was my highschool rally song

  • Starting at 2:30, when Kevin does his little russian dance thing, it make me think of the time that I had to learn to do it for an audition.... it's a lot more work than it looks!

  • We had to do this for audions and it was dorky but funny as hell. I thought its like a cross between The pirates of the carribunn and romoe and juilet X_X im wrong arnt i?

we had to can can during this song. LOL! I loved this play in sooooooo many ways!

  • I'm doing this show right now and I wish we could have this many pirates

  • Oh hey Angela Lansbury

  • @DisYaGirlx3

Agreed. My castmates sing it with a whisper and then loud on the come friends.

  • Cute. Kevin Kline sure is agile.

  • who is here from TvTropes?

  • Loudest Song I've Heard About Being Quiet. Like This If You Agree =].

  • just noticed the pirate king scaling the wall in the back round of samuel's solo

  • i love this song but i have to know it for a play so it works

  • Kevin Kline is having a -lot- of fun. You can tell throughout the entire production.

  • i love this movie my family watches it every leap year

  • this song rocks

  • st laurence's college brotherhood sing it better

  • @MrLily443 BLASPHEMIST!

  • <3

  • 'whats that i heard something' lol!!!

  • This was the best musical made since Singing in the Rain, though this may even be considered better. This song is one of the best, singing really loudly about being quiet. Great!

  • lol, the end.

    "the major general, cums"

  • Best cast of Pirates ever! Although I do prefer the live version. The audience's presence adds to the fun.

  • i love the bush jump at 1:59

  • Kevin Kline's outrageous dancing in this number... Not to mention the epic shout-singing and sword waving. I can't stop laughing.

  • ...In your attempt to quietly loot the castle, you sing loudly, stomp around, and gain the attention of the major general.

well, what did you expect when you roll a 1?

  • @ZaneBarrow I GOT A 4!

  • @ZaneBarrow I c what u did thar

  • @ZaneBarrow You Deserve a medal

  • @ZaneBarrow lol they 'never say a word' apparently, that must be a great consolation when their joyful singing has woken up everyone

  • @ZaneBarrow Pure awesome bro.

  • @ZaneBarrow too many people liked this comment im gonna dislike it ....noyhing personal

  • @civsaballerina No worries, I would do the same thing...

    Actually... No I wouldn't, but I won't hold a grudge. =)

  • @ZaneBarrow it's a musical

  • I've only just discovered this - the Delacorte stage production and the film - and I was just blown away by both of them! There can never have been such a brilliant Pirate King as Kevin Kline - he just creases me up, so funny, as well as being SO dishy! And he moves like a ballet dancer - talk about multi-talented!!! STILL not available over in the UK - grateful to the US for giving it a bit of a modern make over but - can we please have our Pirate King back - "over the billowy waters"! Ta.ra!

  • NO SOUND AT ALL WE NEVER SPEAK A WORD!

  • This reminds me of my dogs! LOL - I swear they act like this! LOL

  • I can't get over how freaking epic this song is!!

  • this is my schools play this year i cant wait to try out :D

  • @TheDarklayla

It was my first musical, it was frakking awesome. I would love to do it more,

  • @dj1159 same here, but to be exact, this was the first high school musical i was in and it was AWESOME!

  • I'm a policemen in my high school's musical for this! :D

  • @E419S Dude! Same here but middle school! Tarantaaaa!!! :D

  • just...the funniest.

  • Kevin Kline is fantastic! Sooo funny. THANKS A LOT.

  • I love this so much. I love Kevin Kline even more though. The thigh action on that man...

  • it's even funnier on stage where each step is like a drum beat

  • Rex Smith, the man that is Fredric, has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. I could listen to it all day.

  • @RuneFactory07 Same here!!!

  • Lol, at 2:28 I always imagine the slow part in New York, New York :P

  • If there is anything better in this life than Kevin Kline doing THIS in a fluffy white shirt, I have yet to discover it.

  • @rudesby I strongly agree!

  • this gav eme chills. ( i a good way)

  • I tried out for the nurse simply because in the version we're doing the nurse is in this number.

  • For anyone who's confused about why they're singing "A fly's footfall would be distinctly heard" at the top of their lungs:

Although written roughly 80 years before Weird Al Yankovic was even born, this song was meant to be a Weird-Al-ish parody of the very noisy "Anvil Chorus" from Verdi's opera _Il Trovatore_. (Verdi's opera was only about 25 years old when Gilbert & Sullivan wrote _Pirates of Penzance_ -- so, like Weird Al, G&S were in a way spoofing the "pop music" of their time.)

  • @ThrobertMcGee My school chorus is singing both of those songs! so far, this is my favorite one that we're doing.

  • this song just makes you want to charge and make a triumphant kick line and celebrate life =] well at least it does for me. and anyone else love how kevin moves in this clip?

  • lol

  • @shmoofles don't we all?

  • Everytime I watch this, my eyes are drawn to Kevin Kline's legs. I dunno why, but they're like...eye-crack. I can just sit here stupidly and watch them. Especially from 2:30 to 2:40

  • @FlatxSharp i know right?

  • >_< ....at least there are some hot guys there.

  • i want to wake up to the sound of a band of opera singing pirates frolicking in my backyard!

  • Hahaha XD

We had to watch this in my theater class this past year and I thought that it was absolutely hilarious, but how they ended it had me completely boggled :p

I'll never forget my theater teacher saying "I love Kevin Kline" in a dreamy voice :)

  • I think its hilarious that they say Quite then they begin singing so loudly.

  • I love this song!

  • I can see someone photoshopping "Here's your crowbar" -bit

  • i did this play three years with the Casper Children's Theater and this was the FUNEST song and dance to do i still remember all the moves we did and all the words also to all the other songs this play was one of the best i have been in I LOVE IT

  • @BlackSabbath612 You. Are. Amazing. Thank you!!

  • And they say ninjas are the stealthy ones!

  • Hehehe. I'm in this musical as one of the daughters. Oh, those pirates XD

  • @homeschoolveggie really, truthfully?

  • @MsZoologist1 Not the movie, but in a local production of it (through a college).

  • @homeschoolveggie oh, lol I thought you meant this, that comment was quite misleading, but thats still cool, I'm kiki, 12 whats your name?

  • How the hell does Kline do those insane lunges?

  • @MattZ2007 it is his body, what is weird about it?

  • My school's doing this play haha, I'm The Pirate King XD

  • @nightwhatchman

    Hey there Tim.

  • @MrZoommr Name isn't Tim

  • why the fuck hasnt this version been released on dvd yet. i fucking hate all the movies executives who wont release certain titles. especially disney

  • I believe the rapport developed between the principals (except Ms Lansbury) makes this a rare gem among film musicals, in their familiarity not only with the piece, but also with one another. I was, however, somewhat saddened to read on Wikipedia that the British actors in the minor roles were only miming to the material of their Broadway counterparts. Not now unalloyed, but, irrespective, an immense and lasting pleasure.

  • this movie got other version a "modern" one... with breakdance and all even with a scene of starwars parody : / anione knows the name of that remake??

BTW: this version is da coolest of course, just wanna see tif i can find the other tnx

  • @pupolozano You might be thinking of 'The Pirate Movie', which was released around the same time, I'm told. I've not seen it, but I know it's a musical with more modern-style music. I've read that it tells essentially the same story.

  • @kittyprydekissme must be that one! tnx ill check it tnx again, hope is here in utub.

  • My school just finished this. I felt so bad for stage crew because they tossed their tools off stage without even thinking about the other people!

  • Oh thank you. This is one of my favorite songs!

  • love my costume 4 this song!!!

  • Wow those pirates are almost as sneaky as me lol

  • Our school is performing this musical and this is one of my favourite songs.

  • @MysteriousTOAST

    omg same!

  • Whoever wrote 'Hail, Hail, The Gangs All Here' should've been sued.

  • This can be taken two ways. It is the stupidest black op ever or the awesomest one ever.

  • Ahaha... :]

    They're so quiet! lolz

  • At first I thought 'kin 'ell;theyre septics"! but by the end i was singing along and cheering. For sheer enthusiasm and panache its one of the best! Thanks for posting Crayford
