@srowley6 Oh dear , your comment really does show how woefully ignorant you are about the G&S operettas. Do a little research into the G&S productions
yes indeed. it is a bunch of pirates singing an over-the-top boisterous and loud song about being stealthy. that is the joke. This probably isn't how it was choreographed in Gilbert and Sullivan's day, but I'm certain it was at least this big and loud. and in "The Model of a modern major general", the joke *is* in fact that he knows very little about soldiering and war.
i'm eighteen and i used to love this film as a child i used to watch it all the time when it was my turn to say what to watch, i have to say, after all these years... it still makes me laugh.
Just prior to this sequence, they crashed their ship into the trees along the shoreline, causing a terrific crash (and causing the cowardly policemen to hide).
just wanted to say thanks for posting these clips. The recent Tony awards started me remembering shows I was able to see. I was at opening night of "Pirates" when it moved to Broadway, and "With cat-like tread" brought the audience to their screaming, stomping, cheering feet. One of the most exciting nights, ever. (And I was able to share with people in the office without trying to wheedle them into watching the entire movie)
I've watched this like fourteen times in the last few days. This is the most epic thing ever.I love the way they press their noses against each other and scream in one another's faces.
been listening to this a lot..........accidently had an outburst at school........started singing and dancing down the corridor ......... not many friends left looooool
@SaphiraSpirit 1) An abby is like or near a cemetery, so a giant tombstone with a scary angel would be a nice flair( we have a lot of nerds around here.) and 2) I was merely mentioning something cool our production was doing, if I could say all the badass stuff that being a pirate entails, well I'd run out of characters. To each his own.
...I played a pirate for the first act of the musical, then the police sergeant for the second half. Well, -A- police sergeant. There were two of us. :p
@christytheawesome REALLY!!?? pro much! "oh pardon Frederic pardon!" XD i was just one of the silly police men but still it was so fun! even though we hurt ourselves...ALOT XD tarantara!
Starting at 2:30, when Kevin does his little russian dance thing, it make me think of the time that I had to learn to do it for an audition.... it's a lot more work than it looks!
We had to do this for audions and it was dorky but funny as hell. I thought its like a cross between The pirates of the carribunn and romoe and juilet X_X im wrong arnt i?
we had to can can during this song. LOL! I loved this play in sooooooo many ways!
This was the best musical made since Singing in the Rain, though this may even be considered better. This song is one of the best, singing really loudly about being quiet. Great!
I've only just discovered this - the Delacorte stage production and the film - and I was just blown away by both of them! There can never have been such a brilliant Pirate King as Kevin Kline - he just creases me up, so funny, as well as being SO dishy! And he moves like a ballet dancer - talk about multi-talented!!! STILL not available over in the UK - grateful to the US for giving it a bit of a modern make over but - can we please have our Pirate King back - "over the billowy waters"! Ta.ra!
For anyone who's confused about why they're singing "A fly's footfall would be distinctly heard" at the top of their lungs:
Although written roughly 80 years before Weird Al Yankovic was even born, this song was meant to be a Weird-Al-ish parody of the very noisy "Anvil Chorus" from Verdi's opera _Il Trovatore_. (Verdi's opera was only about 25 years old when Gilbert & Sullivan wrote _Pirates of Penzance_ -- so, like Weird Al, G&S were in a way spoofing the "pop music" of their time.)
this song just makes you want to charge and make a triumphant kick line and celebrate life =] well at least it does for me. and anyone else love how kevin moves in this clip?
Everytime I watch this, my eyes are drawn to Kevin Kline's legs. I dunno why, but they're like...eye-crack. I can just sit here stupidly and watch them. Especially from 2:30 to 2:40
We had to watch this in my theater class this past year and I thought that it was absolutely hilarious, but how they ended it had me completely boggled :p
