im 47 and a scouser, but i wish i could walk through liverpool with builings like the old days instead of NEXT AND PRIMARK AND THE SHIT LIVERPOOL1.give me lowrys days anytime
What a beautiful song that is a great tribute to LS Lowry, I'd heard of his paintings but only recently have got interested in seeing his work and now that i have i can see why they are so popular, they are simple paintings but capture an era that he knew and when u look at them they just seem to me as if they are alive
Great artist, could stare at a painting of his for hours.
By the way, anyone who loves Lowry must watch the Oasis music video for their song The Masterplan. The song fits the video so well and is brilliant and not loutish rock like Roll With it, it's just amazing watching those paintings come to life.
What a lot of people don't know about Lowry is that he loved the painter D.G. Rossetti.
He was never more happy than when he added to his collection.
The Stone gallery in Newcastle sold him some wonderful works.
Just to give you an idea of the sort of eye he had 'Proserpine' by Rossetti was purchased by him for the some of around £5,000 when it was sold it made over a £1,000,000.
I have seen photos of Lowry sitting in his house with his collections of Rossetti's around him.
Met the man as a child back in 1969 at Workington, he was sat down at the bottom of a grass verge drawing the remains of Jane Pit at moss bay, i was messing around there with a mate on a saturday afternoon.
We didn't really no he he was.
He was a frail looking old man and did not say much, we just sat there and watched him draw for about 10 mins then off we went on our merry way
Wonderful, pennylaneuk. A marvelous tribute to this truly amazing man.
For what it's worth, I've linked this to a mosaic of some "matchstalk" folk of my own ~~ away from all the smoke & factories, and enjoying a well deserved day at the seaside.
Thanks again, you've done the great man proud. Hopefully, brought him to the attention of others who may not already have been familiar with "the old master".
I could never understand why they sang 'kids on the corner of the street that were sparking plugs' until I heard it a few times and realised what the true words were.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hate this song - it makes Lowry out to be some kind of hick, forelock tugging simple Northerner. He was a trained artist who studied under Valette and a technically brilliant draughtsman who chose to paint in what is percieved as a childlike way. A true genius.
OK BEAUTIFUL PAINTING THAT THEY ARE but at the end of the day the beauty i see here is my childhood of Manchester even in the 70's 80's and 90's some things thing dont change but i did not have clogs lol
@pennylaneuk Sorry it was a genuine comment, I was the one who took it down cos I though someone might misunderstand it. It was something I remember reading in the Evening News. No insult intended sorry, just a query.
Thank you so much richie for your kind words. Its a video I revisit frequently myself as I love ths song too. It also happened to be the song that was #1 in the uk charts the day I turned 18!
i work as a roofer, some years ago i heard a tale of a house being renovated in longsight, the contents of the house and loft were skipped and anything burnable was burned in the rear garden, including some old paintings.when asked what type of paintings they were the reply was " some old matchstick paintings". dont know if its true but certainly possible.
I love this, you have just given me a starting point for a lesson teaching art and design to 16 year olds! Nice one! It is fitting because they come from an industrial northern town too, and they aint got much.
Nice video. Loved Lowry since I was a child. My mums bank had a Lowry print in the waiting area. Made the long queue disapear. I could stare at the picture for ages. The picture felt so alive. Just moved within 40 miles of Manchester so will go the Lowry and have a look. Is it any good?
Believe me , I have been to Salford Art Gallery & Museum and also the " LOWRY ", I truthfully think the LOWRY is TOTAL CR@P, looks like a VERY EXPENSIVE baked beans can, when it was all at Salford U could park outside and it was FREE - U weren't under any obliquation to give Megggabucks, there was also the art museum and antiquieitues too !
SORRY - don't think this building has benefited anyone in Salford - has it ?!
It's very good but alas not as good as the old Salford Art gallery & Museum, however very near is the Imperial War Museum North and the newly arty fartyified Salford Quays - a great visit but don't forget wot it's really all about !
I did a job in birmingham several months ago and i,m CONVINCED there,s a genuine Lowry on the wall in the reception i told the owner to name his price alas he wouldn,t sell it..thanks for posting this Awesome Awesome Awesome,,,,
I'd love to know why you have formed this opinion? I happen to think it dignifies working class people as it shows their resiliance, fortitude and hard working attitude.
artists paint stuff, dunno what the right or the wrong of that is, today you have porn films whatever, yesteryear an artist done an impression, all human, all want and need sex, dont try too destroy one man through art
xmzytb. Why are you posting this stuff? It has upset me deeply. None of what you say is true, why, just why are you saying this? Ive got tears as i write this.
Well I am very sorry to upset you. I am saying it because it is the truth. Mr lowry was a human being, not just some sweet painter of children in the streets. I am not a sick person at all. I love Mr Lowrys paintings and always have. This secret collection of his work is know as the "marionette works" and was discovered after his death.
However I should never have posted the comment and I wish I had not. He was a great painter. Maybe my comments can be removed?
