I'd like to see what it looks like inside the Soyuz; both the Orbital Module and Decent Module.
I have a question:
It's been over 40 years since they've designed it, so why can't they integrate the two modules into ONE ship?? Isn't it a waste to just to trash the Orbital Module upon reentry? It seems they are still using a 1960s solution to getting people into space. Yes, I know it works(!), but couldn't the actual DESIGN be updated as well as the computers in it?
@mlovmo It is a brilliant design. By not having the OM come back to Earth it does not need nearly as much shielding. This makes the craft much lighter and more efficient to launch. It just so happens they came up with the good idea in the 1960's.
Cheap, reliable, but does not look any bit as glorious as a Shuttle landing. And those dudes running around not caring about the camera... so not like with the American flights, where a good show is an important part of the job.
@LeadHammer Yes, Those New British (which you call americans) know how to make good shows. We all remember show on Sept. 11. Bravo! Killing your own people. No need to pay to movies extras!
@LeadHammer The space shuttle is way more glorious, but the russians have a way stronger stomach. I mean look at that! the damn thing just falls like a rock!
Well that is true, the good show should be part of the job for the russians too, I wish that they will start paying more attention to that, because they have awasome machines that would look much better and sell much more, with the adecuate filmation. But don't go to far neither, like when american soldiers staged the capture of saddam hussein or the rescue of one of their soldiers. DragonToko also said another example
@Kenjineering Yes, Soyuz descent modules are equipped with several rockets on the bottom to help soften the impact. Its still a pretty good jolt, several cosmonauts and astronauts have reported bitten tongues and lips and feeling jarred after impact.
Because arbaigs are to protect your face, not the entire body. Here the whole body must be protected for the impact the soyuz makes. So, like people said already: it fires rockets to slow down the speed to about 20 km/h wich is still not soft, but it won't hurt.
Can everyone put their heads together and help to save the animals in the Golf of Mexico? and I'm not talking human animals after all we are overpopulating the earth. And NASA have no idea how to colonize the moon.
@peppeddu Well, the problem is that the shuttle is an overly complex spacecraft due to the fact that it isn't always a spacecraft. Its also an aircraft, with all the complexities and drawbacks. That being said, the shuttle has put more people into orbit and has had more flights than the Soyuz spacecraft. Shuttle: 132 Soyuz: 105 Now consider that you'd think that the Soyuz would be in the lead with its first flight in 1967, the shuttle first flew in 1981. That's a 14 year gap.
I agree, the Space Shuttle is a remarkable aircraft and I personally love it.
The problem is cost. 500 Millions Dollars per flight vs 20 Millions makes it a big difference. How many people would you be able to carry on a Soyuz with the budget of one Space Shuttle flight?
Thinking about that it was originally sold to the congress for 5 Millions per flight (yes, the Space Shuttle) things for a bit our of control over the years.
Seyains have jus landed on planet Earth!!!

Did that let out a short burst of thrust, for deceleration, just prior to impact?

@graymattermarketing Thanks a lot for the informative reply!
Kenjineering 1 year ago
Yeah, it's the same impact, but this time devided in 2....but they occur so fast after each other, that the body "feels" them as 1, only less hefty.

why no air bags?

@Dragonlor140 Maybe just could make seats softer I gues. Cheap and effective solution.

Ouch, I hope that has airbags
jackjohns01 1 year ago
@jackjohns01 it has rockets that fire right before touchdown instead of airbags like some other capsules have had.

@Palgh actually after watching again i did see the rocket firing to soften the landing just before touchdown.

The return is not as high-tech as the Space Shuttle, but they have a much better reliability record for a fraction of the Shuttle's cost.
