  • they should throw away that stick and freak armor and use flimsy blades similar to the sabre or epee blades equipped with electric scoring system. use fencing helmets that have protection to strikes against the back of the head. have them use lames that covers their neck and down to their thighs. use wireless scoring system....uh..jianshu anyone? unfortunately the jianshu league cant or probably never thought of doing this. well thats a suggestion.

  • @ShuyuKoukin

It´s not their idea and concept - using electric scoring system and or epee blades! What you are talking about is sports not arts... In their jianshu style, they want to make it close to a "authentic swordplay" - and that is of course different to other jianshu styles...

    greetz

    frank :-)

  • @wudangjian what "authentic swordplay"? name one form that they actually applied in those bouts. just because you try to make your cuts and thrusts look kung fu-ish it doesnt mean that it will be called authentic chinese swordplay. you can fool the layman but not people with experiences. true, western fencing is definitely a sport but it's also a solid no-nonsense defense system. we have PROPER parries, riposte, transports, etc that are being perfected everytime we stand on the strip.

  • @ShuyuKoukin

hey dude, you have to ask / to talk to the guys from the sword league not me. ;-)

I understand what you are trying to say ... but its pretty easy at least: it´s the skill of the practioner/fighter and not the style or the techniques...

and once again - it makes a difference if only some techniques and aim zones are allowed (sports) or you can do everything anywhere (arts) at the fight. and that takes at least a big effort to learn and to apply .... ;-)

  • @wudangjian yeah i agree. the style never makes the user good its the user that makes the style good. i practice the chen taijijian and i apply many of the forms in fencing. which is why i find it awkward that these people who huddled under one banner labeled "jianshu" consider themselves as a jianshu practitioner. unlike me they dont use any jianshu. so do you think it makes sense for them to consider themselves as a chinese sword stylist? lol

  • can someone explain to me why they are fighting with one hand since they are not holding shield or another weapon?

  • @loveryoda

because that´s the way they fight. ;-)

  • @loveryoda they're using a one handed weapon. There isn't a lot of room for another hand to hold it. Two handed Jian (Straight swords) exist, but not many people use them for some reason. It's not exactly against the rules or anything.

As for the shield, well, the rules only allow one "ne" sword and nothing else.

  • holy shit however i look it seems every duel last like 2-3 swing, then thats it. It seems that parrying isnt even efficient a bit in a real swordfight. and they all swing in what seems a complete disorder. I knew it couldn't be as kickass as in the movies, but yet... I wasnt expecting something as dis-gracious!... so deceiving... i'm so decieved.

  • @jwul28

jep. "real" fightning is pretty different to modern wushu shows and martial arts movies. ;-)

besides that, it depends of course also on the skills of the swords men, the style and the range of used techniques....

  • @wudangjian but i looked even to some tournament final match and stuff... i haven't seen only ONE fight that was cool. it seems its all about 2 or 3 seconds, and bam someone touches. i was expecting at least a couple of "clashing" sometimes. it's like a tennis match that would end after the first or second return... anyway, wich martial art would you suggest me to try? I always wanted to, (but european foil fencing seems gay to me, i wanna try something else, less "regulate") thx!

  • @jwul28

i know exacly what you mean! there where 5 referees who tried to judge fair as possible.

it was pretty hard to judge who hit first and which hit was the more effective one....

the question is when to make a breake while fighting and hiting....

less regulate means martial arts! i like the traditional kung fu with its weaapons and sword-styles. ;-)

    we do meihua tang lang.

    greetz

  • @jwul28 thats how people in this "league" do it. they always use the excuse as..this is real fighting or..its not choreographed. dood i practice taijijian and taijidao and i was able to use many applications in my sabre bouts. sabre fencing is way faster than this, idk why these people cant pull it off. my applications arent godly like the ones in chinese movies nor gracious..but those applications that i pulled off represents "Jianshu". this represents nothing. no offense guys.

  • Anyone interesting in competing, the next European Tournament is already in the works for Mid-May 2012 in the Netherlands. More info about the Traditional Chinese Sword League can be found at: swordleague*com

  • did they consider using fencing armor?

  • @kaindrg

not really, because the fencing armor is "too thin" for that heavy wooden swords.

all techniques have to be executed pretty hard, to get a point for it...

    greetz :-)

  • Now, that certainly looks interesting. Did you take part yourself or did you spectate?

  • @KlausBeckEwerhardy

i first wanted to spectate. the investation for the equipment is pretty intensive and i wanted to see what the people are like and how the jury is interpreting the rules... we spent some time before the tournament and had friendly sword exchanges ;-) next time i´ll take part.

    greetz :-)

  • @wudangjian

How much does the equipment set you back?

  • @KlausBeckEwerhardy

I suppose in a range of 250 to 450 euros.

they use parts of lacross gear, kendo helmet, special thick cloths & the wooden jian.

    probable only for freaks ;-)
