The great Getz was the first to launch the jazzsamba, with his sound and the staff as well as the classic vibrato tax, has used harsh Reed, one of his characters. The Best for me.
Stanley doing Jobim's Masterpiece one of my favorite tune's by my favorite Tenor Sax Artist in Wonderful Copenhagen! Dude it doesn't get much better than that! Kudos to those that make this possible to view. Thanks so very much
Best lesson from Stan Getz - make some space for the notes! Smooth as silk, whatever he plays. From Black Orpheus to now, no better music exists than Bossa Nova.
Long time Getz drummer Billy Hart in this video. Excellent, as always. Can't say for sure who the other band members are, so I won't hazard any guesses.
I dont understand Danish but for sure one can hear the presenter in the beginning saying "Dave Brubeck". But this lovely melody is by Brazilian composer Tom Jobim. João Gilberto sings it under its Portuguese title "Vou te contar". Cheers.
@abraham4770 u mean WAS the best, right? (he passed in June 1991.) however, if were talking best of all time i disagree since--even though he had a very a pretty tone--i could never vote for someone as best ever who only used the upper register (and mid range) of the tenor. to me the best tenor men of all time are those who were great AND used the whole range of the horn--guys like Coleman Hawkins and Don Byas...but different strokes...
@soulfullyanointed If you are talking about using the entire range of the tenor, nobody took it further than John Coltrane, although his direction in the final yrs were a bit way out for my taste, his music from 1955-1964 was, timeless, innovative, original (in presentation), my humble opinion................
@starfly7 I disagree and think of JC as mostly an "upper register" tenor player as well--a style ushered in by Getz and JC in the 1960s that deviated from the "old school" sound of Hawk and Byas which favored the lower register of the horn. When I think of players of the '60s with a lower, more robust old school approach, names like Johnny Griffin, aka the "Little Giant," come to mind--or even Sonny Rollins who came out of the "Hawkins school" rather than the "Young school" as did Getz and JC.
@soulfullyanointed Well, I respectlfully disagree, but thats what the world is about variety and tastes, but no question about it, they are all masters of their craft, hard acts to follow.
Stan plays Stan's way, he was an original! I read Wayne Shorter thought he was eloquent and heard him play 'Infant Eyes' on the Montreux Summit Vol. 1 and became a fan. Stan was great on Bossa Novas but after him playing the Shorter tune I bought 'Captain Marvel' with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Tony Williams. Rollins, Dexter, they all add to the language! In the 70's I loved Grover Washington but how about Joe Farrell ? Modern is modern , race has no place in jazz being original.- Fc
@DAGUY Get Stan's 'People Time ' double CD with pianist Kenny Barron, It is a timeless live recording! I will check out the one you mentioned but I am a Getz fan and love his taste.- Fc
Rawego, i hope you were only kidding when you said i was racist and brought up Getz's Jewishness ( which of it is true i was not even aware of ) . I have posted a fairly detailed comment which i hope clarifies what i meant.
To all those who thought my comment was racist, i understand thats the impression my comment may have given you when u read it, but let me clarify i DID NOT mean it that way. I was just trying to convey that the Getz sound was not as appealing to me as the Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson kind of `dry' sound . I am not comparing them of course but just meant to say that i had never given Getz a fair chance ( associating him mainly with Bossa Nova tinged music ) till i watched this video.
I understand my comment may sound racist when u read it but let me clarify i DID NOT mean it that way. I was just trying to convey that the Getz sound was not as appealing to me as the Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson kind of `dry' sound . I am not comparing them of course but just meant to say that i had never given Getz a fair chance ( associating him with just Bossa Nova tinged music which was only a small part of what he played/recorded ) till i watched this video. @vvsivakumar well you've made the first step, just remember that JS Bach was thought the founder of walking jazz basslines and he was German! Soul is within us all the trick is letting it free in a world that judges too hastily and without true knowledge. Jazz, like Love is free!

No man! Thats why we should bring up the personal demons! Its how we bring them up that matters. Its like wine, the grape that is strained produces the sweetest wine. Stain strained with internecine (look it up) and turmoil and he produced this! bravo!
Me too buddy, me too. Mr Getz was/is the finest saxophonist, ever! The sometimes elusive quest of perfection can take a lot out of a person. People shouldn't bring up someone's personal demons, which are too often part of the creative process, don't you agree? RIP.
Oh, but it was if only you knew Danish. I don't, but that's not the point. Getz chose Copenhagen as his residence for quite a few years, because he liked it so much.
Great Stan! He makes you feel as though you hear this tune for the first time.

Nah, I think you're way off!!!
Sonny Rollins produced and still produces music way, way ahead of
what Getz could ever dream of! I couldn't agree more that Stan Getz had a lovely tone and kicked off beautifully on bebop,
but Rollins is a living legend - Listen to his xtremely soft playing on ballads
and his ingenious improvisational skill is unsurpassed!
Dexter Gordon was a true giant, but if you like tone there's Hank Mobley!
