@LongLiveWho green day fucking rocks! but Nirvana changed music history.. there is no better or worse.. there is no comparison..and how does liking one band over another equate with taking a dick in your ass?
@KONAROCK1 if you actually read my first comment, it says that why listen to nirvana when u can listen to green day?, tlking to someone else. never said nirvana sucked.
I don't understand when people say "sellout." it's absurd. People forget the ramones, sex pistols, and the clash (punk founders) were all on Major labels.
All the people that doubted them and said they would fail? Look at them now! They continue to inspire new generations and their music is still fucking amazing! Suck it!
this part is so fucking stupid, they make it seem like signing to a major label is equal to murdering someone lol dramatic music and all..''it was scary'''
@MajorLeagueLover thats what ive been trying to tell everyone that says theyre not punk by going to a major label. If punk is doing whatever the fuck you want, then thats exactly what they did, the didnt give a shit what others thought, they just did what they wanted and thats why theyre punk. :)
@MajorLeagueLover THEY NOT SELL OUTS! THEIR MUSIC AND TALENT JUST CANNOT BE DENIED!!
Selling out is SELLING ur tunes 2 fatcat car and beer co. ad&commercials! They just their music out to the world so anyone who listens can go any store and get,and online etc......instead of chasing round trying 2 get indie records that had JUST SOLD LAST ONE B.S.!! GO,ROK ON.!LONG LIVE GREEN F******DAY!!!1
billie joe, mike and tre's future..AND ALL OF OURSS!!!- would have been changed astronomically if they confrormed to a make believe set of 'rules' just to stay true to people that were only holding them back....if they really were a true community, they would have been supportive
if punk is about being yourself, everyone is different, so not EVERYONE will want to stay underground...'true punks' are infact conforming so strongly, by trying not to conform- they all become the same
if punk is about being yourself, everyone is different, so not EVERYONE will want to stay underground...'true punks' are infact conforming so strongly, by trying not to conform- they all become themselves
but isn't punk supposed NOT have any rules or codes? so technically, green day didn't do anything bad, they didn't sell out. they did what they wanted to do and THAT is punk. they went against judgement from their "hardcore peers"
Thats freaking stupid. All this talk about "Punk code" and "Punk rules" is the the stupidest crap I can think of. There is nothing less Punk than setting rules like that. Punk is really just being yourself and doing what you want and not giving a crap.
@GRIFpenguin That's exactly what I believe. I hate the so called "hardcore punks" or "true punks" who just hate and get nasty towards everyone who don't go by punks "rules". It's like WHAT THE FUCK, why the hell are there rules? What rules? It's about NO rules. Being true to yourself and who you are. Doing whatever the fuck you want, not caring about what society thinks about it in general. Being alienated in some way, but taking that and saying fuck it. I am who I am. Love it or fuck off.
The funny thing is three years after this documentary was made they released American Idiot and they did become the biggest band in all of Rock music.
if you think about it, if they had never signed to a major label, they probably wouldnt even be a band anymore. they wouldnt have made any money, and they would have had to get jobs and they most likely wouldnt have wanted to be in a band anymore. saying they sold out is so stupid, just because they sell millions of records doesnt make them any less punk.
@Bullet4MyA7X if they didn't sign to a major record label, then more than half of us wouldn't know them. and they wouldn't be the people they are today.
@Bullet4MyA7X good for us as fans, anyways. but you heard what billie/mike/tre said. they still don't know if they did the right thing. and they'll never know cause they can't turn back time and live out their lives to see what would happen if they stayed with lookout records. in my opinion, i think they'd just end up signing to a major label in the end. they're very ambitious. or at least billie is.
Having a "punk code", saying if you sign to a major label you're a sellout is itself, dumb actually. Signing to a major label was the punk thing to do. And it was because they were good, and not just a random thing. Green Day were good enough to have been recognised by major labels which is hard to achieve.
Did wal-mart kno who they wer talkin to? The punk rock kings. I hate the way the narrator dude makes them look like asshole sellouts when they are not.
I love their name! i tryed to come up with a name as cool as theirs for my band so i came up with Tomorrow Has Come but it sounds to weak so i turned it into Marahaz. they have the best damn name in the world!
i dont think they're sell-outs. They refused to take out the f-bombs on 21st century breakdown when wal-mart asked them to be family friendly. i actually laughed out loud when i read that and said "That's my boys"
In my mind, most punks are idiots. Bands like Green Day didn't REALLY sell out, sure they signed to a major label, but they never gave up any of their beliefs, they never let the label boss them around creatively. I fuckin' hate stupid twats who think they own a fuckin' band YOU DON'T!They can do what they want, write what they want,If they were so amazing earlier why weren't they big then? And as for calling them sellouts, they are entitled to earn money aren't they?I mean it IS their job is it not?Grow up and shut the fuck up
Listen, I love punk rock as much as the next true lover of punk, but I think it's kind of stupid to say you can't be on a major label and get your music across to a wider audience. Why not? What's the point?
GREEN DAY FOREVER!!!!!!! I dont care if they became sellouts, even thought their older stuff was better, theyre still punk, and they started a new age of punk too, GREEN DAY!!!!!!!!
When most of the famous musicians or actors tells you that they dont do it for the money, I dont usually believe them.. Not all of them at least.. But when Billy said it.. and after hearing their story I cant help but believe it.. Cause they are just real.. Like, they are nor fake. and you can see it on how they behave and talk.. Totally real and them.. I LOVE green day..
that is one reason i don't like punk as much and i'm stil true to metal.....because if your a metal act and they sign you the crowds just got nuts.if you sign to a major in the metal scence the shows might just end up getting bigger.. But for Punk Rock the crowds and fans turn their backs on them. I think that is a load of crap. And even today some people still don't give punk and metal the true respect they deserve
One thing is bothers me. It's that everyone seems to care about wich musicstyle Greenday is. Who cares, they play amazing music and thats all that matters. Thats at least what i think

Its funny no one bitches about Nirvana being on a major label, but the minute Green Day and Bad Religion signed to a major label everyone was up in arms. Hell the only reason I discovered either of those bands was through MTV...back when they had 120 Minutes at least.

Also a lot of people never considered Nirvana punk so that is why there was not AS MUCH bitching.
Personally I could care less, do what you want but do not conform and change your sound for them.
I guess...I wouldn't know, I guess I jumped on the bandwagon when Grunge/Punkcore became popular in the early to mid 90s. I mean, Bad Religion is my favorite band and the first time I was exposed to them was hearing "Infected" on the radio. So if that puts me in the wrong, I don't want to be right.
Bad Religion is a great band. I have seen them live a good amount of times. There are pros and cons of going mainstream. You get tons of fans. Some bandwagon fans but then real fans who will stay with you all the time even if the record some what sucks, but it can drain you as well. Example Cobain.
So true. I remember when Bad Religion released No Substance and The New America, both of which betrayed their original punkcore sound. It made a lot of fans mad (Even Fat Mike from NOFX himself hated The New America), but I absolutely love those records. Bad Religion is an example of a band who can change their sound and still rule. I guess the opposite would be The Offspring. They are true sellouts cuz ever since Smash, their records have gotten worse and worse. Their latest record SUCKS.
Smash was great, after that you are right they became complete shit. NOFX really has no room to talk since they allow their songs on EA sports video games and that is worse then signing to a major label so haha. They are hypocrites.
My favorite actually hardcore punk bands are Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Minutemen (more funk punk), Flipper, Scratch Acid (more noise punk), same with Sonic Youth. There are so many bands that are good bands that are famous it is insane.
Green River, The Melvins, Soundgarden, Flipper, basically invented Grunge. Grunge was also a marketing term that grouped the bands from Seattle. Nirvana was very punk. You are very ignorant it seems when it comes to music.
Oh god, it just came to me, now I understand why Billie once said "Punk rock is dead and I killed it". I get his point and god damnit it's deeper then I excpected it to be:P
@Martinthedrummer Billy Joe is not BISEXUAL,shut up faggot,Ill personally shut you up,why would you try to spread striff and discontent amoung the brethren??
@NAMTRIP Well no you havn't, cretin. He's commented about himself. He finds guys attractive and stuff, but said he probably couldn't bring himself to actually be with a guy. It's just the way he's been for his whole life. You're just kicking off because you're straight and aren't comfortable with Billie Joe being Bi. Selfish cunt.
.. in my oppinion... its all about the music and what you feel... doing what you want to do and changing the world or influencings the world in some way is punk as hell.... but labels of any kind like punk and what not are actually not that rebellious... punks spend all of there time trying to not be like everyone els... so it all goes back to conformity... but.. green day is kick ass and i love them . fan for years.
Green Day is nothing but just an ORDINARY/boring group of "misfits" with marginal talent. I've seen bands in NJ consisting of just high school and college kids that blow this band away and would make you question why people listen to their gay music.
sooo... how is obeying a bunch of ppl and doing what ur expected to do, punk? lol that sounds rilly conservative to me, signing to a major label and doing whatever the hell they wanted to do was probably the most punk thing they couldve done bc they beat out their status quo, green day does what they want not what theyre told, isnt punk all about listening to urself and not everyone else, i love how those supposed real punks go so far to the left that they start going2the right :P its hilarious
@Punksnotdeadbitch1 Exactly, I always though punk was about doing what you like, so if they wanted to make some real money for a change, they had to sing to a bigger label, so fucking what? I mean, gosh, for not giving a fuck about anything, some of the 'real punks' in this interview have some really strict and not so liberal 'rules'. -.-
Bull shit, they're burning out now. It doesn't bother me that they signed with a major label... Dookie, Insomniac, and even Nimrod were great records. But their latest bunch of albums have just gotten worse and worse. I don't know if I can call it selling out if that's the music they want to make, but I sure as hell prefer their previous work.
But I've gone off track. You can remain just as influential on an independent label. Look at Black Flag, Misfits or the Descendents. Very influential.
True but Lookout was more of a idk....they were a label that basically signed local bands, so the bands would have something to sell at shows and they could make money off them...They weren't a label that intended to make superstars, get major radio play, and major distribution... If that makes any sense...

Bad Religion is a great band. I have seen them live a good amount of times. There are pros and cons of going mainstream. You get tons of fans. Some bandwagon fans but then real fans who will stay with you all the time even if the record some what sucks, but it can drain you as well. Example Cobain.
Cheers man.
RadioFriendlyNoise 2 years ago
Collegejew629 2 years ago 2
Smash was great, after that you are right they became complete shit. NOFX really has no room to talk since they allow their songs on EA sports video games and that is worse then signing to a major label so haha. They are hypocrites.
My favorite actually hardcore punk bands are Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Minutemen (more funk punk), Flipper, Scratch Acid (more noise punk), same with Sonic Youth. There are so many bands that are good bands that are famous it is insane.
RadioFriendlyNoise 2 years ago 2
Nirvana is also a punk band IMO. Very abrasive, musical freedom is very noticeable with songs like Polly.
I can not get into Green Day's new sound, but hey that does not mean they suck just not my style.

dude nirvanna are grunge
dumbass
they fuckin like invented grunge
hahahahaa
numbnuts

wrong wrong wrong.
Green River, The Melvins, Soundgarden, Flipper, basically invented Grunge. Grunge was also a marketing term that grouped the bands from Seattle. Nirvana was very punk. You are very ignorant it seems when it comes to music.

@Martinthedrummer Billy Joe is not BISEXUAL,shut up faggot,Ill personally shut you up,why would you try to spread striff and discontent amoung the brethren??
NAMTRIP 1 year ago
@NAMTRIP Well no you havn't, cretin. He's commented about himself. He finds guys attractive and stuff, but said he probably couldn't bring himself to actually be with a guy. It's just the way he's been for his whole life. You're just kicking off because you're straight and aren't comfortable with Billie Joe being Bi. Selfish cunt.

@NAMTRIP Billie said it himself.

@NAMTRIP Actually, I'm almost certain he's admitted that he is bisexual. Do you have an issue with that?

@mainecolbs I can verify that. Coming Clean was actually written about his bisexuality.

.. in my oppinion... its all about the music and what you feel... doing what you want to do and changing the world or influencings the world in some way is punk as hell.... but labels of any kind like punk and what not are actually not that rebellious... punks spend all of there time trying to not be like everyone els... so it all goes back to conformity... but.. green day is kick ass and i love them . fan for years.

"THE PUNK CODE"?
Green Day is nothing but just an ORDINARY/boring group of "misfits" with marginal talent. I've seen bands in NJ consisting of just high school and college kids that blow this band away and would make you question why people listen to their gay music.
SeanIsri21 2 years ago
college kids. rich assholes. most of them at least. green day had nothing but talent

punx1122 2 years ago 7
sooo... how is obeying a bunch of ppl and doing what ur expected to do, punk? lol that sounds rilly conservative to me, signing to a major label and doing whatever the hell they wanted to do was probably the most punk thing they couldve done bc they beat out their status quo, green day does what they want not what theyre told, isnt punk all about listening to urself and not everyone else, i love how those supposed real punks go so far to the left that they start going2the right :P its hilarious

Being "Punk" is doing what YOU want to do.
Punksnotdeadbitch1 2 years ago 84
totally right
engivalkire123 2 years ago
@Punksnotdeadbitch1 Exactly, I always though punk was about doing what you like, so if they wanted to make some real money for a change, they had to sing to a bigger label, so fucking what? I mean, gosh, for not giving a fuck about anything, some of the 'real punks' in this interview have some really strict and not so liberal 'rules'. -.-

imagine if they didn't sign with warner... i wonder if they would be just as big now?
sethnuva 2 years ago 4
Nope because Lookout didn't have the distribution or radio connections reprise has. If they'd stayed on Lookout they would have probably burned out
BoUnDnBrOkEn627 2 years ago 2

Bull shit, they're burning out now. It doesn't bother me that they signed with a major label... Dookie, Insomniac, and even Nimrod were great records. But their latest bunch of albums have just gotten worse and worse. I don't know if I can call it selling out if that's the music they want to make, but I sure as hell prefer their previous work.
But I've gone off track. You can remain just as influential on an independent label. Look at Black Flag, Misfits or the Descendents. Very influential.
PapaGio 2 years ago
True but Lookout was more of a idk....they were a label that basically signed local bands, so the bands would have something to sell at shows and they could make money off them...They weren't a label that intended to make superstars, get major radio play, and major distribution... If that makes any sense...
