your hips are open before you move then as your feet pass the mid point and you slide forward you tense your stomach and squeeze your legs together whilst punching forward making sure your hips throw the arm and body forward but making sure you dont rotate your hips past square and also dont lock your arm fully or you will hurt your elbow joint when repeating this because of the force generated soon as punch lands relax and start again and always breath
JKA instructors' videos are the best ones because they have a great and beautiful form, very perfected. It's a great help for starters. As for me, I have already learned most of the Kihon but I've decided to start over and perfect them step by step, starting with a proper stance, moving on to a proper movement and finally the technique itself. I'm planning to take my Karate to the next level and this videos are being a great help.
I've been learning this punch for some time now and I always feel this uncomfortable impact along my front leg and entire back upon landing forward. Is there something I'm doing wrong I wonder.also i just feel unbalanced and my oi tsuki seems to have no power behind it.Any suggestions?
@jcrae217 hmm, that normally happens when ya lean into the punch. make sure ya back is straight and you are standing on your mooto or zengetsu stance properly. also, your advancing foot should glide forward rather than stomp on the floor, energy of the punch is forward. you could try doing the punch with a camera recording beside you. hope this helps!
@jcrae217 Also make sure your fist rotation happens at the right moment. Hip Movement is the key here. Use the shoulders as well for a bit push. For me i found a good way to learn how to put strength in the punch was to train with the punch but the elbow is not extended fully. Leave it bent and progressively extend it a bit more. I dont know why that worked for me i just know it does. lol
Use a double push. Push with your back leg as hard as you can (like a sprinter out of the block). Then push with the other leg (like a sprinter with his first stride). You should literally "run over" your opponent and knock him down if your punch misses.
ok I just started my training in shito-ryu karate. My Sensei keeps telling me to keep my heels out while doing the Zenkutsu Dachi(front stance) and in every video I've come across, their heels are in and toes are out.
@tman229 oi tsuki is fist relative to the advanced leg; example left fist when you have left leg advance, ghiaku tsuki is fist opposite to advanced leg, left fist with right leg. my english is notr very good, but i hope you understand.
The guy is a great martial artist. That is obvious, but I have to say, that after playing karate 40 years, I long ago reached the conclusion that this way of executing oi zuki, where the hand strikes the target at the moment the foot hits the ground, is wrong. Shotokan guys now throw what they term a version of gyakuzuki that is in fact the proper way to deliver oi zuki. Search for "yamaguchi gyakuzuki" on Youtube and watch how he makes that punch. I don't have the space to explain why.

@brickshooter front leg pulls you forward, not back leg push.

So Oi zuki is a Gyaku Zuki but with a step forward? I'm not good with the Japanese terms and really only recongize it as a reverse punch.
