thank you very much for all this. you must work as a mechanical engineer. I built a pinto powered trike a couple years ago but it is quite big (autom. tranny, s10 r.end) . I have had something like this in my mind ever since I realized trikes are not bikes. I have an extra chevette motor but I don`t know- . anyway, thanks again, this is just what I have been looking for. sam nolankerry@hotmail.com
Rdhog, Just saw UR VID Great Work... I'm a disabled Vet. & I'd Like 2 Know If U Have Diagrams,Blueprints,Building Guidelines OR a Parts List? If U Do I'd B Interested In Aquireing Them.Dr.s say I'll never ride again. PLZ!!! Contact Me @ itzanazbear@yahoo.com. I Would Luv2 Build1 as a Trike. The Kick Start is Fantastic!!! Like I said any Build INFO would B Appreciated... THANK-YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! U've Given Me A REHAB GOAL & Project 2 Think'bout... I LOOK FORWARD 2HEARING FROM U. NAMASTE' BEAR
The right angle gear box is an industrial box made by Browning. 1:1 ratio with spiral cut gears. I used industrial taper locks on the one inch input and output shafts. As far as I know this gearbox is still made. I need to get out my list of parts bought to get the part number.
Really nice I had a V.W. trike that did'nt run as good as that.. Depenable, it was... I rode it all over the U.S. but that sounded nice... Job well done...
You Sir have taken two things I really love & married them togetter.
That kicker and the micro switch.......blew me away , you have any-more smart pills?
God knows I need some after looking at that! wow
I wish that other Corvair-two wheeler from 69-or70's were still around so we could look at the two bikes! Your's is simpler less hand-made parts, whats the longset trip you've ever taken on your Harley/vair???
Very cool!!...nice use of the right angle gear box, you solved my problem!...I have a 32V Northstar 300hp engine that weighs as much as your Vair motor...now I just need to find a used Harley to mate it to and I'll be on the road...thanks for the gear head video...AWESOME!!!
@johnps12 The engine I started with was rated at 102 HP. The heads were cleaned up and a later model high performance cam is used so I am guessing around 110 HP. The everyday riding fun comes from the smooth running and abundance of torque.
I have a Corvair, and a Harley, now I need a HarVair to sit between them in the garage. That is some wonderful engineering and application right there. When you offer a conversion kit let me know :D I'll be the first in line for one.
Wow!!!! I'm a big Corvair fan, but I just keep buying more, and everything's pretty much stock! I'd love to see it one day, but your vid is super, I couldn''t have done any better!
Must've been a lot more trial and error than you've made it seem...
I use an aftermarket electronic ignition conversion called an ignitor instead of using the old points. I bought two of the ignitor modules and mounted them across from each other on the distributor plate but staggered so the timing is about 8 degrees different. The switch at the kick starter switches between the two modules. It made it easy to start when the kick starter is used and then has the proper advance after starting. It has been a simple trouble free setup.
Great bike Rdhog! I love Corv. engines, and have built two 2 cylinder ultralight airplane engines from one. I'd like to build a hotrod with Corv. engine soon. What gear box is that "right angle" one you used? It must be a strong one to take that much power, and yet it looks pretty small.
The right angle gear box is an industrial box made by Browning. 1:1 ratio with spiral cut gears. It was never intended to have that much HP run through it but the bike is so much lighter than a car the high stress periods are short. I have interests in aircraft as well. Cutting down a Corvair engine sounds like it was an interesting project. Lots of hotrod possibilities with this engine.
I was surprised myself that even stopped in traffic, engine idling on a hot day the head temperature would not climb to redline. With no shrouding the natural updaft of hot air pulled in cool air at the bottom of the engine. With normal driving and the head temperature drops down. Thanks for the comments.
Wow, super great engineering and video. I like the retard feature. I like that the engine seems not to get a high head temp, and as you said it has run for 15 years! I guess that is because you cruise it mostly. Great motorcycle design!

Oustanding work there. Congrats. Now all you need is to slip a 180 hp turbo motor in there...:)

how does the switch on the kickstart retard the ignition timing?

10 stars for ingenuity! Have you slipped it on a dyno? I would be interested in seeing the numbers.
