You should make a video on the proper way to clean the switches and controls on a vintage clock radio. I would be forever indebted to you if you would!
That my friend is a very unique clock radio. I'm used to seeing the clock on the left hand side and the radio on the right. And the arrows as the station indicators, one word; WOW!
AFC is automatic frequency control, it is to help keep the FM tuner from drifting off of the station due to things such as temperature changes in the components.
I happen to own two of these old radios I picked them up from a thift store on 11-25-09 and the one of the rca's was dead the other one was barley working but I fully restored them both mine is working great I have one in my bedroom at home and one on my computer desk.
I replaced all caps and new powercord them both and they work again.
I have an LLOYD'S model 1j61G-1188 mechanical digital clock radio my self. I like the mechanical clock radio's better anyways. I had to spry the motor out with WD-40 and its working better now but were can I get that stuff your talking about? I've never heard of it.
I have seen some other radios probably from around this time (with the RCA block letter logo) that have a really late 60's style to them, he may have had a part in designing them? It seems like sometime in the maybe mid 70's RCA quit making radios. I see a lot more "RCA Victor" radios than those with the more modern logo on them.
He didn't design them so much as he ran the design department back then. Earlier in his career, he designed automobiles for Ford and Raymond Loewy. Sometime in the future, I aim to do an article on him in our radio club bulletin.
ohhh man Wilkes85 is gonna love this one! I've always wanted one of those things too. I wonder if you remember those old early 70s battery operated wall clocks that had the magnetic balance wheel instead of being quartz. we used to have 2 but my mom threw them out a looooong time ago I'd really like to get one!
I think I know the type you mean...we have a Howard Miller mantel clock with chimes and it runs on 2 D Cells. It seems like it's just a straight electric motor, not quartz. Also there's a Seth Thomas battery powered school type clock I have which has a continuously running second hand like an AC powered clock...this may be also a non-quartz type.
yeah the ones i'm thinking of actually ticked, they had a regular clock movement, but you never had to wind them up because this little magnetic balance wheel that was powered by a stationary electromagnet

I am surprised it did not slide off your workbench. Sound really good and it has great reception. Nice radio!

Thanks! I think I had most of its weight on the bench. I had the alligator clip power cord hooked up to test it out.

Looks like something Tucker Madawick's RCA Design Center came up with. I got to interview him before he passed away. Remarkable man...
