As noted, the audio quality doesn't do justice to the brilliant vocals of Peter Gabriel. This song closed out the soundtrack for "Shall We Dance". The music continued well after the vocals were done. It was so good it gave me the chills.
Sorry Magnetic Fields... your version (which of course is the ORIGINAL) is quite good... but Peter Gabriels's cover version simply is the best... by far! I saw him performing it in Berlin at this very concert you can see in ths video... it was one of the most touching concerts of my life. My band and I tried to cover the song - you can hear it on my channel ;-)
@dholmes974 THis song was written by a pure made genius (you spelled "genius" wrong) Stephin Merritt. Peter Gabriel didn't write this song, and it was never meant to be performed like this, this big Hollywood style extravaganza type thing. It's a simple love song written by the most talented man in the world. Stephin Merritt.
@senatorgreenday With all acknowledgement of Stephin Merritt's creative genius, Peter Gabriel elevates this song. As an artist with 3 decades of history behind him, to even select this song is a tribute to Merritt's artistry. But Gabriel is without question the superior vocalist and this arrangement has far greater emotional impact than the original.
Stephin Merritt is to be commended for creating such a brilliant poem. Peter Gabriel is an enormous compliment of a successor.
@caveatemptor27: Well said. While I respect both artists and enjoy both versions for completely different reasons, it has to be said that PG's rendition is immeasurably better than the original.

The Book Of Love is such a great song - I like this cover version by PG the best!
On my YouTube-channel you can listen to a completely different version by a German rock band from Berlin.
