I liked the steal ability in this game it gave you some good stuff earlier than expected but didn't break the game, plus stealing wasn't all that hard with bandit and master thief equipped. Other Final fantasies I don't care for too much except maybe Final Fantasy V
HCBailly, I know this is like almost 9 months after you made this episode, but my opinion on stealing is that it's a great mechanic, but they don't make it very useful. It can be pretty annoying trying to steal items from enemies but getting nothing from them. I barely did any stealing when I started playing this game because of that.
This is starting to look like how the Earth was formed. I'm pretty sure the planet that collided with the still developing Earth was also called "Terra", although this happened billions of years ago and not thousands of years ago.
Stealing in Final Fantasy was the best. It sucked donkey balls in Lost Odyssey, especially since you had to forge rings to offset the abysmally low steal rate but you weren't able to forge the really good steal related rings until the mid to late game. By then you had to do serious backtracking to make it worth your time. Pickpocketing in Fallout 3 is hilarious since you can leave a little surprise behind to blow people up.
Beating Hades was easy because when I first fought this boss, I gave my best party members like asorbing nulling shadow attacks. Now that was smart what I did. That is one smart ways to beat Hades. Just remember to use Eiko in battle when you about to fight Hades. Why? HOLY!
I mostly ignore the steal command in every Final Fantasy I've played, whenever I try to use it it's never all that good and fails constantly. So I don't bother.
That was absolutely hilarious when Zidane cast thievery while dead. The long attack animations killed Amarant, and the long attack animations allowed a dead character to kill the boss.

getting thievery off for the kill right before zidane dies is the most badass and epic thing that happened in this playthrough and btw nicely done powning hades.
Steal is only cool when the item is worth the time, especially when you have to give up something to have the steal ability. Hurray after 5 turns I stole an Ether!.... wait... no... I just bought 20 of those for 1500 each.
( 3:40 ) Oh yeah... now I remember reading about that Optional boss... and the #2 sword thing (Excalibur 2 ?)... and the Ultimate Synthesis Shop... Must have a LOT of money for that final place ;)

I say that, in ANY games, Lich are always pretty interesting enemies or boss... The undead mage thing for more power is a good concept ;)

Stealing is great in this game, I think. Not only are you rewarded with the items, but you are working on Thievery the whole time. This game is so good about giving out items, you basically don't even need to buy any common items.
I wasn't aware Save The Queen had any impact on the ending. I've heard everything from it does, to it only does when you also have the Hammer in your inventory as well. But i've never actually taken notice to what having The Save Queen does for the ending. However, I do know that the Hammer increases it by an entire scene which is omitted if you don't have it. Also, technically, the Excalbur 2 is obtained in the Lich room. Not the Hades room.
Unfortunately, due to an error in the rate the game clock runs at in the US PAL version of the game, it's not technically possible to achieve the 12-hour run.
@Loxagn Actually, from what i've been told, the Excalibur 2 run is infact, very possible in the PAL version of the game. However, the EX2PG (Excalibur 2 - Perfect Game) run is not. But getting to the sword alone is apparently very possible without the use of a cheat device in PAL versions.
It's very possible to make a 12-hour run in the PAL version (there is no "US PAL version", btw; PAL is used in Europe and Australia), it's just virtually impossible to make a perfect Excalibur II run.
I like stealing in theory, it's nice to think that the stronger enemies are walking around with some additional nice equipment that you can find if you try. However, the rare steals in this game are just sadistic and only serve to hurt completionists. I'm not sure what I think the maximum rarity should be - 1 in 8 or 1 in 16? That seems fairly reasonable, without making getting rare items too easy.
If you got wait mode on during battles you can use it to stop the death timer over a character which is perfect if your trying to do something befor the character dies. all you got to do is open the item menu during attack sequences then the timer will pause during it.
You know HCBailly, you make me feel like a noob after watching you do these Let's Plays. I mean, I've destroyed these games , but you make it look so simple. ha ha.
I enjoy stealing in games, since I'm kind of the packrat type when it comes to items. Especially since now I'm playing FFTA again and have Marche as a ninja with steal as a secondary ability, it's so awesome to just take random crap from the enemies. It's also always one of the easier ways to get rarer things. Though I haven't played a lot of games with a stealing mechanic, I do enjoy it.
I've never really liked stealing in any turn-based RPG. It usually ends up being too much hassle for too little reward. Though I do like the stealing system from Fallout 3 and the Elder Scroll games.
Hades was a pushover! If Damarant cant beat you, Zidane is Your bane, Death Lich (context, people)! Over 5 Thoouusand years, well, way more than that. But most of all, I never got past Tiamat- or my disc froze, or never equipped enough, so seeing this whole LP via HCBailly was my favorite Ever(and I may finally see the ending sequences, too)!
man i really wish they would give hc and unlimited amount of time. i love his lps he makes them all so interesting and non stop laughs and helpful information. he really makes u watch it all the way down to the last second and make u wish for more.

I tend to like stealing. I've been playing Final Fantasy X lately (making an LP of it, in fact) and I've been feeling kind of disappointed that there isn't really much to steal. Where I am in the game Rikku is pretty useless outside of stealing still, and all there really is to steal is random customization components and potions.
Super rare steaks are a little too far on the obnoxious side, but when it's useful AND manageable, I really love steal.
I think the stealing mechanic is dumb. If the boss has the item, just drop it when I kill it. He'd still have it either way. It's stupid to sit there for 5 minutes trying to get some stupid weapon.
I always found the Steal mechanic to be annoying. if your not useing an FAQ 1/2 the time you miss or have a useless item so you waisted a turn when you could have been attacking. im not the biggest fan of FF10 but I do like the way the handled the steal conman. the items are almost always useful and have a time were they would be used, and for some enemys like all the machina its an offensive skill and when I do miss later on you get the mug command
Well HC Bailly, to me stealing is nice if the game lets you grab helpful items like Potions so you don't have to buy them, and an occasional rare item. But I dislike having too many enemies having too many rare items to steal.
HC, are you going to do a Let's Play Final Fantasy X? That would be such a good LP, Final Fantasy X has so many good moments in it to counter balance it's bad ones. In general its a good game.
I love the stealing ability in games but I like it better when 1. every one has a steel, 2 a large number of monsters have rare steels, 3 its easy to steal with out failing, or any other factor that makes it worth it.
HCBailly, you are gonna break a trend here.....since FF1, every subsequent FF game you have done, you have done more videos each time. This could be the first time, you have done LESS videos than the previous FF game (took you 124 vids to do FF8).
@SlurpeeTigger Yea, if it was back to 10 minutes, this would have been part 163, so in a sense he is keeping the pace.......makes me wonder how many would FF 10, 10-2 and 12 would be, since he is probably doing 13 next.
Just one thing of note, that isn't to do with EII, as that has already been said, is that the Kraken boss, although it seems weird, is actually weak to fire not thunder.
I think the steal skills should function something like the attacks in Legend of Dragoon. A player skill/timing based deal that at the very least spikes your chances up quite a bit higher than the normal percent chance to steal successfully.
I just did this part last night. Sadly I didn't have the items needed to create Save the Queen. But I did pick up the Tin Armor since I use Steiner a lot. That armor kicks ASS.
Nice 'taking you with me' there, Zidane. i like it when this happens, always looks epic.
On the matter of stealing: I generally don't like it, because it is so luck based and I'm usually unlucky. Maybe if I know my chances and can buff them or to decrease gold farming by stealing stuff in random battles if it's worth something. But being forced to steal for 5 minutes to get decent equipment... Please don't.

Only FF is use Steal is IX because well Zidane is with you 99% of the game. BUT stealing is just so fuckin' annoying; might take ages just to steal one stupid item. Happens to me for example with Holy Lance. Yet every boss usually has something really good that you want to steal... Still, stealing is quite irritating.
This game has the most tedious Steal, in a game where stealing items is most necessary. All other steals were just minor distractions. I thought Locke was awesome for example, but I never had a reason to use him, as opposed to Shadow, Edgar, or Sabin. Edge's steal is almost useless, and the Steal in FFV was only sometimes convenient.
this is the newest video game i cleared, and the last time i played was in like 2004, and my newest vg council is the ps1... but i did clear ff1 to ff9 and love them allmost as much as that feeling i get when watching hcbailly play a game, ty hc you the man!!
I love the stealing mechanic a whole lot better when it is incorporated into a strategy game, because the items up for grabs are usually part of an active inventory that can either be stolen or broken.

Well HC Bailly, to me stealing is nice if the game lets you grab helpful items like Potions so you don't have to buy them, and an occasional rare item. But I dislike having too many enemies having too many rare items to steal.

HC, are you going to do a Let's Play Final Fantasy X? That would be such a good LP, Final Fantasy X has so many good moments in it to counter balance it's bad ones. In general its a good game.

I RARELY ever use the 'steal' mechanic. I used it a few times in FFVIII to get some items to synth weapons. But other than that I don't use it.

I love the stealing ability in games but I like it better when 1. every one has a steel, 2 a large number of monsters have rare steels, 3 its easy to steal with out failing, or any other factor that makes it worth it.

HCBailly, you are gonna break a trend here.....since FF1, every subsequent FF game you have done, you have done more videos each time. This could be the first time, you have done LESS videos than the previous FF game (took you 124 vids to do FF8).

Just one thing of note, that isn't to do with EII, as that has already been said, is that the Kraken boss, although it seems weird, is actually weak to fire not thunder.

I think the steal skills should function something like the attacks in Legend of Dragoon. A player skill/timing based deal that at the very least spikes your chances up quite a bit higher than the normal percent chance to steal successfully.

I just did this part last night. Sadly I didn't have the items needed to create Save the Queen. But I did pick up the Tin Armor since I use Steiner a lot. That armor kicks ASS.

On the matter of stealing: I generally don't like it, because it is so luck based and I'm usually unlucky. Maybe if I know my chances and can buff them or to decrease gold farming by stealing stuff in random battles if it's worth something. But being forced to steal for 5 minutes to get decent equipment... Please don't.

Only FF is use Steal is IX because well Zidane is with you 99% of the game. BUT stealing is just so fuckin' annoying; might take ages just to steal one stupid item. Happens to me for example with Holy Lance. Yet every boss usually has something really good that you want to steal... Still, stealing is quite irritating.

This game has the most tedious Steal, in a game where stealing items is most necessary. All other steals were just minor distractions. I thought Locke was awesome for example, but I never had a reason to use him, as opposed to Shadow, Edgar, or Sabin. Edge's steal is almost useless, and the Steal in FFV was only sometimes convenient.

I love the stealing mechanic a whole lot better when it is incorporated into a strategy game, because the items up for grabs are usually part of an active inventory that can either be stolen or broken.
