Russians whining about dirty play? Are you fucking kidding me? You guys play a pussy style, hallmarked by dives, hooks and other assorted cheap shots. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black lol! Gretzky and Lemieux are better than any player the USSR EVER PRODUCED! Get over it. 2nd best is nothing to shake a stick at. Canada will always own you at hockey. Your olympic/international achievements didn't mean shit until the pros could play. Keep crying!

Well I can also say that the Canada Cup wins for Canada did not mean shit since it was a biased home tournament and the USSR did not always send its best players there.
Pros always played in international tournaments, just not always from the NHL. But when NHL players were allowed in the World Championships after 1976, this did not affect the Soviets winning almost every year.
Also Canadian teams were known for dirty play and diving, so I don't know what you are talking about...
@unnamed00 You are an idiot. How can you talk about pros participating in the world championships with a straight face? The WC take place during the NHL playoffs meaning very few of our best could take part. That's a very weak argument. As far as diving goes the Russians perfected the art. How did it go for you guys in 2010????
@SuperStrik9 well still russia was the best several times before, then canada & usa, but now days take a look at us in europe. how many gold medals have russia, czechia, sweden, finland won under the 2000 and before you say canada olympics in vancouver, check the team differencials in salarys etc Czechs and swedes dont line up with 120% superstars from Nhl and still grab medals almost every time
I always find it strange that three of the greatest games in history were played in a city with no NHL team back then and still has never gotten a team.
Canada wins 2 games to 1 and sets off all of Russia in a 23 yr campaign of lying, whining and denial trying to claim they didn't really lose because they can't handle being beaten by a better team. Ya have to love it!
I guess you're just so used to watching the refs and judges cheating for Russian all the time in every international event that when they don't you apparently think Russia actually got screwed because they're supposed to be cheated for. Pathetic.
I laugh at the whiney cry baby that claims the refs cheated for Canada which is the ONLY reason they won, who whines about Canada getting away with everything and Russia getting away with nothing, who claims that all of Canada's goals were faulty and has the audacity to look at the first Russian goal in this game (46seconds into this video) and claims that was Fuhr taking a swing at the Russian and NOT a Russian knocking him out of the crease to create an empty net goal illegally. What a joke.
@unnamed00 Nemchinov wasn't pushed you lying sack of crap. He crashed Fuhr intentionally and after he was knocked out of the net he pushed him back. That part doesn't matter though as the play should have been called dead for a Russian penalty for goalie interference immediately and thus no goal. You just can't be honest enough to admit that it was CANADA that got screwed on several of the calls because it would ruin your excuse. You are truly too clueless and full of crap for words
Canada cheated in the 1987 game against USSR. I've seen the replays a USSR player was tripped twice and no penalty was called. I know the referees did not see it, I'm not arguing that. But Canada did cheat, because you are not allowed to trip someone. It really baffles me when people say Canada fairly.
The World Juniors is a better tournament than the World Senior tournament because the best under 20 players are all available to play. Not so with the supposed "World Championships".
Well, I know it´s not well supported in Europe, which is a shame because the quality of hockey at the U20 tournament is very good. I watched some of the games in Pardubice in 07-08 it was excellent hockey played before sometimes not-so-big crowds. I know the IIHF wants to increase its popularity in Europe and I think the European teams would have more success if more people paid attention to it.
That's part of it, but also you could say that Canada does well because it's so popular . . . for Canadians it's an important tournament to win. Its popularity also has to do with the time of year it is (right after Christmas, cold outside, mid-point of the NHL schedule). Also, junior hockey is very popular in Canada. I know that in the top junior league in the Czech Republic, admission is free to games and only friends and family go to watch, generally.
@zheka1780 no, we love the future players, just like americans love College Football & basketball.....nothin like seeing yur team's draft picks playing at the ultimate level. Of coarse being a Leafs fan, i don't get to see many draft picks.
@zheka1780 yur not too bright when it comes to hockey. The world Juniors is the 18 year olds in the World. @quincee33@quincee33 not really...probably the greatest game in world junior history was new year's day 1988 in Moscow. Canada won 3-2 and career backup Jimmy Waite was unbelievable in goal. The winning goal was scored by some guy named Marc Laniel who never played a minute in the NHL.
Anyways, how can junior players, in general, be better than the pros?
@vdven i don't think they're better. but it's completely even - 18 year olds versus 18 year olds...the future of the NHL so to speak. Just like some people like college football and college basketball better than the NHL and NBA. I love Olympic hockey but that only happens every 4 years. the World Championships are a bit of a joke since so many NHLer's are still ion the playoffs and some players are too tired to represent their country. at least the World Juniors are every December/Jan.
I remember watching this series when it happened. Incredible drama! Living in Sweden, I was used to my team losing regularly (though not always) to the Soviets. We knew Canada were the only team with a realistic chance at stopping the red machine. Looking back, I think the two teams were evenly matched, separated only by the mercurial genius of Gretzky. Remove him from the Canadian roster, and the Soviets dominate.
Smoke another dube Hinkelbein! Some guy named Yzerman didn't make the Canada team in '87...and can anybody tell me who the second line was for russia? didn't think so.
Sergei Priakin was the first Russian that was allowed to come over freely to play in the NHL (for Calgary at that time). The rest followed shortly afterwards at about that time, yes.
The Russian goaltender Belosheikin was to be the next Tretiak. Had incredible talent. He was drafted by Edmonton in 1991, but had big-time alcohol problems and eventually washed out of hockey altogether. He committed suicide in 1999.
Played with the Vancouver Canucks for a year but the dude couldn't stay out of the doughnut shops..He had a serious weight problem..They nick named him Vladimir Crouton
Okay: Finally I get to tell the real story of the game winner ingame 2. Look close, it's Brian Propp that backhands the pass to Mario for the winner not Gretzky. I broke it down on another tape... Yep Propp should get the assist. If I ever see Brian I'm gonna ask. But I'm 99% sure Propp beat Wayne to that puck. Check it out, look close and I think you'll agree.
Yes The Great One would get the other assist but Propp didn't get any. Propp passed it to Murphy then to Mario. The announcers had such tunnel vision for Grets & Mario they forgot Propp. Ya he got the win but didn't get the credit for the great pass to Mario... To bad! Look close Propp backhands and Wayne was at his full extention so theres no way! Not even Wayne...Which brings me to my next Q. Why didn't Wayne speak up and give Propp his due?? Thanks for your reply
Heggster44, no worries. I would not be so sure that Gretz didn't get the first assist. It's difficult to tell from the camera angles, and without actually being on the ice it's tough to say. Secondly, why didn't Coffey say something, as it was Coffey who was awarded the 2nd assist, not Wayne. It was Coffey's point to give away since Gretzky would have had the assist regardless.
Coffy No Way! Murphy passed to Gretz who shot then Propp & Gretz went for the pass (Propp) shot (Gretz) I don't even think PC was on the ice. Bourque, Murphy, Propp, Gretz, Mario. Are you sure PC got the assist if so wow! what a mistake!!
meant to say Murphy, not Coffey. Same logic applies, though. It was Murphy who should have said something, as it was his point to give away, not Gretzky's.
I can mention only Cancup91 where in final serie CAN-USA it was not so fair and referees showed a bit support to canadiens. Wcup 96 I did not see and ´04 I saw only CZE-CAN game.
I think referees were O.K. also in Worldcups and Olympics, nobody can speculate about that Canada has won CC thanks to help of referees,it is a nonsense.
Canada has won four of five Cancups, small ice rink was an advantage and no longterm built team was canadien disadvantage compared to drilled USSR, so 50:50 ,Canada was better a little.
Fuhr in that style of play in the 80's was a better goalie then roy, yeah in this video you can only see the goals but the russians in this game had over 50 shots if you watched the first overtime fuhr saved canada.
interesting observation.Does hanging back long enough over the blue line constitute an onside call or was it just one of many questionable calls by the refs?
What it means is the puck crossed the blue line before Lemieux's back foot...hit the pause button at 3:28, then quit your chirpin' and stop trying to discredit a legit win that happened over 20 years ago...
You Russians are embarrassing in your need to justify a loss that happened 20 years ago...I guess going a quarter century without winning a significant tournament must really sting...
HUGE goaltender interference run by Kamensky on the Russians' first goal, allowing Khomatov to capitalize on an out-of-position Fuhr...no call, what gives?
Gimme a break unnamed, there were non-calls both ways. You guys weren't saints, and you sure as hell didn't play clean. It was a great series, and you're tarnishing it with your prepubescent whining.
Kamensky was pushed into Fuhr and Fuhr was sticking out of the crease. Anyway, it would not have been a goal if Fuhr did not decide to go try to punch Kamensky, making himself look like a fool.
Look at it again, Kamensky makes NO EFFORT to get out of the way whatsoever, which is the determining factor in the ruling as per NHL standards. If he was pushed into Fuhr a foot away from him, perhaps you've got more of an argument...but you're telling me physical contact at least 6-7 feet away from Fuhr was enough to send him flying into him?
And if I'm Fuhr, I'd throw a shot too, let'em know what'll happen if he tries it again.
Leafs-Islanders about three weeks ago...Toronto's third goal disallowed because Ponikarovsky and DiPietro tangled up accidentally...play reivewed, goal called back, Islanders win 3-2 in a SO. This might be the point that sees the Leafs miss the playoffs.
Do you even watch the NHL today? Or are you still breaking down Russia's 1988 Calgary Olympics victory play-by-play?
You are the one being dump, ignoring the fact that the only reason the goal was scored was because Fuhr was dumb in going after him and not because he got accidently bumped.
You are so full of it, it's not even funny reading your ridiculous whining anymore. To cry about Canada cleanly beating the Russians in an event 21 years ago and blaming the refs for all of Canada's goals, while making up ridiculous excuses for no calls on blatant offenses on some of the Russian goals (like the first Russian goal in this game) is beyond pathetic. Get a life kid.
You seem to be mad, why? Because you know what I am saying is true and the truth hurts you.
And I am not making excuses. The counter arguments for supposed serious Soviet offenses are ridiculous. Yes it is the Soviets' fault that Fuhr was stupid in trying to punch a player instead of worrying about where the puck is... :)
Merely pointing out how pathetic you are. Fuhr gets knocked over in his crease, that's ok, Bourque (the puck carrier) gets hauled down in his end for another goal and that's ok, something happens well behind the play and Canada scores a goal and you cry your eyes out blah blah blah. The best team won and you'll make any excuse you can find to try to discredit it because you can't handle it 21 years later. You're wrong and can't handle it. Get over yourself and your tantrum kid.
You are pathetic. Fuhr does not get knocked over, but accidently bumped while sticking out of the crease. And then he tries to throw a punch...
Bourque (I guess you are talking about game 3) gets the tip of his jersey touched and falls. Whether the hook pulled him down is debatable, as even the Canadian commentators say that he just fell. If you want to see what hauled down is, look at Messier's hook, about 30 seconds earlier (shown here: watch?v=RCh4PtteLuY at 1:45).
You apparently see what you want to see, that's fine, having read your previous comments, I wasn't expecting any credibility out of you and you didn't display any. You're simply wrong on all accounts and really need to let it go, it was 21 years ago and the best team won.
Which is exactly what I said. Anyone that chooses to ignore the facts and just sits back making one excuse after another has no credibility. (In case you hadn't noticed, it's unanymous around here as to who that applies to)
You just need to quit making excuses and accept that the best team won. There were 33 goals scored by the two teams in the 3 game series, some of those goals had contact (such as Fuhr being knocked over outside his crease, Bourque being hooked down, and Hawerchuk touching a player well behind the play). To cry because one of those goals was scored by Canada, while pathetically dismissing those scored by Russia is just making silly excuses because you can't handle the truth. The best team won.
Again the best team does not need such advantages and help to barely win.
Funny how you talk about the supposed Soviet offenses (which again are bad attempts at excuses from you), and downplay what Hawerchuk did. He hooked down a player that caught up with Lemieux. Open your eyes...
You can continue to enjoy this Canadian win, but denying that it came after dirty play and officiating is dumb.
I don't get it...the Canadian winner in OT...it's a hook behind the net, but why is he dragging his ass to get back into the play? You can't tell me that 10 seconds pass after that interference and he can't get back into the play, that's bullshit...watch how long it is from the hook to the actual goal...not to mention the HORRIBLE defensive coverage in the neutral zone on Bourque.
Canada gets away with at least a hundred penalties a game when playing the Russians, other wise it's no contest.

2) Gretzky and Lemieux were on the ice for almost every goal. Both for Canada and for Russia.
elgan123 4 years ago 2
if im correct, soviet/russian hockey players were not allowed to play in north american until the fall of communism, which happened in 1991.
paulwalderman90 4 years ago
Sergei Priakin was the first Russian that was allowed to come over freely to play in the NHL (for Calgary at that time). The rest followed shortly afterwards at about that time, yes.

Cool. My coach was played in that game.

This is one of the best hockey games ever...Kamensky !!!

The Russian goaltender Belosheikin was to be the next Tretiak. Had incredible talent. He was drafted by Edmonton in 1991, but had big-time alcohol problems and eventually washed out of hockey altogether. He committed suicide in 1999.

Check it out, look close and I think you'll agree.
heggster44 4 years ago
Even if Propp backhanded the pass to Mario, Wayne still gets the 2nd assist, so it doesn't really change anything. 5 assists either way.
nazzytuzzy 4 years ago
Yes The Great One would get the other assist but Propp didn't get any. Propp passed it to Murphy then to Mario. The announcers had such tunnel vision for Grets & Mario they forgot Propp. Ya he got the win but didn't get the credit for the great pass to Mario... To bad! Look close Propp backhands and Wayne was at his full extention so theres no way! Not even Wayne...Which brings me to my next Q. Why didn't Wayne speak up and give Propp his due?? Thanks for your reply
heggster44 4 years ago
Heggster44, no worries. I would not be so sure that Gretz didn't get the first assist. It's difficult to tell from the camera angles, and without actually being on the ice it's tough to say. Secondly, why didn't Coffey say something, as it was Coffey who was awarded the 2nd assist, not Wayne. It was Coffey's point to give away since Gretzky would have had the assist regardless.
nazzytuzzy 4 years ago
Coffy No Way! Murphy passed to Gretz who shot then Propp & Gretz went for the pass (Propp) shot (Gretz) I don't even think PC was on the ice. Bourque, Murphy, Propp, Gretz, Mario. Are you sure PC got the assist if so wow! what a mistake!!
heggster44 3 years ago
meant to say Murphy, not Coffey. Same logic applies, though. It was Murphy who should have said something, as it was his point to give away, not Gretzky's.

this is possibly the greatest (offensive) game ever.

I can mention only Cancup91 where in final serie CAN-USA it was not so fair and referees showed a bit support to canadiens. Wcup 96 I did not see and ´04 I saw only CZE-CAN game.
AMOLADOS 4 years ago
I know very well what I am talking about after so many matches watched .
AMOLADOS 4 years ago
If you say that the refereeing was unbiased in the Canada and World Cups, then you don't know what you are talking about.
unnamed00 4 years ago
In your opinion
chichigord 4 years ago
Didn't the Soviet team specifically request Don Koharski to be the referee for this series?
prootwadl 4 years ago
I think referees were O.K. also in Worldcups and Olympics, nobody can speculate about that Canada has won CC thanks to help of referees,it is a nonsense.
AMOLADOS 4 years ago
Again, you don't know what you are talking about.
unnamed00 4 years ago
Canada has won four of five Cancups, small ice rink was an advantage and no longterm built team was canadien disadvantage compared to drilled USSR, so 50:50 ,Canada was better a little.
AMOLADOS 4 years ago
You can maybe say that if the referees were fair. And why are you only talking about the Canada Cup?
unnamed00 4 years ago
Im very glad Canada won, but sorry...."The Big Red" is the best team ever. The fight was in Canada with a referee who was not objective.
Also, the game was in a smaller rink. Ok, thats was the deal but im sure Russia should outplay Canada in a biger rink (Europe size).
The was to simply to fast, Makarov and CO.

should have had Roy in goal not fuhr
milankiev7 4 years ago
Fuhr in that style of play in the 80's was a better goalie then roy, yeah in this video you can only see the goals but the russians in this game had over 50 shots if you watched the first overtime fuhr saved canada.

I'm talking about the goal not about the game.Lemieux was clearly offside was he not?BTW I am a proud canadian and big hockey fan of this series.
yoda124 4 years ago
No, he wasn't offside...he "clearly" hung back just long enough to be onside..."clearly"
chichigord 4 years ago
interesting observation.Does hanging back long enough over the blue line constitute an onside call or was it just one of many questionable calls by the refs?
yoda124 4 years ago
What it means is the puck crossed the blue line before Lemieux's back foot...hit the pause button at 3:28, then quit your chirpin' and stop trying to discredit a legit win that happened over 20 years ago...
chichigord 4 years ago
Lemieux was clearly offside when he scored the 3:31 goal.
yoda124 4 years ago
You Russians are embarrassing in your need to justify a loss that happened 20 years ago...I guess going a quarter century without winning a significant tournament must really sting...
chichigord 4 years ago
...And yahoo!
chichigord 4 years ago
Man, this was Belosheiken's moment in the sun... it's really sad just how far dowbhill he went after this series.
barkingclam 4 years ago
HUGE goaltender interference run by Kamensky on the Russians' first goal, allowing Khomatov to capitalize on an out-of-position Fuhr...no call, what gives?
Gimme a break unnamed, there were non-calls both ways. You guys weren't saints, and you sure as hell didn't play clean. It was a great series, and you're tarnishing it with your prepubescent whining.
Flamesfan7 4 years ago
Kamensky was pushed into Fuhr and Fuhr was sticking out of the crease. Anyway, it would not have been a goal if Fuhr did not decide to go try to punch Kamensky, making himself look like a fool.
unnamed00 4 years ago
You're more biased then I thought.
Flamesfan7 4 years ago
I am sure you would. That is the Canadian hockey thinking which makes them very foolish at times.
You might have a point if Fuhr was not partially out of his crease blocking him.
unnamed00 4 years ago
BLOCKING HIM?
How bout cutting off the angle on the shooter?
The more you talk, the more it looks like you've never played the game past a street hockey level.
That was the dumbest thing you've said yet.
Flamesfan7 4 years ago
Dumb post? Look who is talking.
I meant that he was in his way and not all in the crease. That would probably not even be a penalty in today's NHL.
unnamed00 4 years ago
Once again, even dumber than the last.
Flamesfan7 4 years ago
You are the one being dump, ignoring the fact that the only reason the goal was scored was because Fuhr was dumb in going after him and not because he got accidently bumped.
unnamed00 4 years ago
You are so full of it, it's not even funny reading your ridiculous whining anymore. To cry about Canada cleanly beating the Russians in an event 21 years ago and blaming the refs for all of Canada's goals, while making up ridiculous excuses for no calls on blatant offenses on some of the Russian goals (like the first Russian goal in this game) is beyond pathetic. Get a life kid.
nahlsy 3 years ago
You seem to be mad, why? Because you know what I am saying is true and the truth hurts you.
And I am not making excuses. The counter arguments for supposed serious Soviet offenses are ridiculous. Yes it is the Soviets' fault that Fuhr was stupid in trying to punch a player instead of worrying about where the puck is... :)
unnamed00 3 years ago
Merely pointing out how pathetic you are. Fuhr gets knocked over in his crease, that's ok, Bourque (the puck carrier) gets hauled down in his end for another goal and that's ok, something happens well behind the play and Canada scores a goal and you cry your eyes out blah blah blah. The best team won and you'll make any excuse you can find to try to discredit it because you can't handle it 21 years later. You're wrong and can't handle it. Get over yourself and your tantrum kid.
nahlsy 3 years ago
You are pathetic. Fuhr does not get knocked over, but accidently bumped while sticking out of the crease. And then he tries to throw a punch...
Bourque (I guess you are talking about game 3) gets the tip of his jersey touched and falls. Whether the hook pulled him down is debatable, as even the Canadian commentators say that he just fell. If you want to see what hauled down is, look at Messier's hook, about 30 seconds earlier (shown here: watch?v=RCh4PtteLuY at 1:45).
unnamed00 3 years ago
And what happened well behind the play?
You are the one who is about to throw a tantrum here and can't handle the truth that anyone with any objectivity sees.
unnamed00 3 years ago
You apparently see what you want to see, that's fine, having read your previous comments, I wasn't expecting any credibility out of you and you didn't display any. You're simply wrong on all accounts and really need to let it go, it was 21 years ago and the best team won.
nahlsy 3 years ago
I see what I want to? Look who is talking...
If you choose to ignore facts and try to come up with bad excuses then you don't have any credibility.
unnamed00 3 years ago
Which is exactly what I said. Anyone that chooses to ignore the facts and just sits back making one excuse after another has no credibility. (In case you hadn't noticed, it's unanymous around here as to who that applies to)
nahlsy 3 years ago
That depends on whether you are a blind Canadian fan or not.
Unlike you I don't sit back and whine, but prove my point in the other video.
unnamed00 3 years ago
You just need to quit making excuses and accept that the best team won. There were 33 goals scored by the two teams in the 3 game series, some of those goals had contact (such as Fuhr being knocked over outside his crease, Bourque being hooked down, and Hawerchuk touching a player well behind the play). To cry because one of those goals was scored by Canada, while pathetically dismissing those scored by Russia is just making silly excuses because you can't handle the truth. The best team won.
nahlsy 3 years ago
Again the best team does not need such advantages and help to barely win.
Funny how you talk about the supposed Soviet offenses (which again are bad attempts at excuses from you), and downplay what Hawerchuk did. He hooked down a player that caught up with Lemieux. Open your eyes...
You can continue to enjoy this Canadian win, but denying that it came after dirty play and officiating is dumb.
unnamed00 3 years ago
Anyone know why there were only four Soviets in their zone on the last goal?
unnamed00 5 years ago
I don't get it...the Canadian winner in OT...it's a hook behind the net, but why is he dragging his ass to get back into the play? You can't tell me that 10 seconds pass after that interference and he can't get back into the play, that's bullshit...watch how long it is from the hook to the actual goal...not to mention the HORRIBLE defensive coverage in the neutral zone on Bourque.
Flamesfan7 4 years ago
I did not say that this hook was the reason. I just want to know what happened to him.
