That if you use too much oil and then heat it upside down in your oven, the cooking surface because un-smooth because bubbles and droplets form.
I think vegetable oil not good for seasoning. I have tried that and lard and I think saturated fats make a far better seasoning. I also never us steel wool on my pans.

She should have put the pan in the oven upside down, that way the excess oil will drip out and not pool inside.

True, but then unless you have a pan underneath to collect the excess oil, it'll drip into your oven.

A sheet of foil on the bottom to catch the dripings works best.
