Hanging the plants upside down makes them easier to deal with. The vines hang down instead of flopping all over and needing to be staked or caged. I think it makes watering a little easier too.
I was just gonna say, that aint a 2 inch hole!Whats the real benefit of hanging them upside down? Space saving? I am thinking of doing this inside my restaurant.
My feeling is that a 2 gallon pail would be on the small side. But you can try it.

Thanks for the comment. I agree, it's always good to bury a lot of the stem with tomatoes.

I find that the plants are stronger, in the long run, if you bury a lot of the stem, leaving about 2-3 sets of leaves showing.
