The E55 was a very quick car, the inlet valves 202 with 180 exhaust in very tallport heads, Carter Thermoquad 780 cfm Spreadbore carb. Some had high compression. 12:98 1/4 mile factory stock. Tall differential ratio produced extreme top speeds.
de-tuned e55 were built to satisfy bathurst , this lean mean race motor was given a automatic , smaller valves in the head to the american version , 318 cam and a smaller carby . this pussy whiped excse for a race car was built but in limited numbers and was not ment for bathurst and by this time chrysler usa was looking for money and chrysler australia a devision of plymouth started looking at ways to save money mussel car scare in australia rest of the world was concerned about oil prices
@vcval The motors did have big valves and very tall ports, some had high compression, I saw a factory stock E 55 340 do 12;98 at AIR Raceway. The later VJ had a de-tuned 340 version smog motor with small valves etc. The E55 was toned down after the muscle car scare and autos were fitted. They were meant to have Super T10 manual boxes. Many were exported to England. 410 were built according to what I was told. 110 had TA blocks.
so in australia the big 3 was more like the big 2 but they let chrysler pretend they could have a chance by letting them race with the gm's and fords , after ford australia sent a team over to newzealand to see why they were not doing as well as in australia they saw australian 318,430,360 creaming the fords , ford rushed back to australia and the bathurst threatening to pull out if chrysler were alowed to build a race car , so the e55 that was tested streight from usa was detuned
what chrysler had to do to get the e55 to bathurst , all has to do with todd's of new zealand, bathurst rules so many had to be sold throught the dealers before the could race it at bathurst , in new zealand if you cold get it to the track you could race it , in new zealand importedmost cars they were not limited to the big 3 as we called it new zealand racing chargers had manuals and big v8s and dominated in new zealand and were raced up to 1982 when they ran out boddies to race
the e55 was to replace the e49 i am un sure on how well they would have run the story as told to me the 340 was chryslers americas answer to the 350 and 351s at daytona , chrysler tested them in 2 utes one vf and the other a vg both shortened and weighted to charger specks the 340 failed on the track the tortion bars letting as with all chryslers creat in the streight just lookout for the corners,i am uncirtan if the test utes or "the mule" as it was know at the factory was a manual or not ??
I remember when these were worth nothing and they were scrapping them in the early 80's like they were with all the classic coupes back then, how things have changed.

This car was next to me when I showed my AP6 at the all chrysler day in 2005.
The old stag helped me find the place, we were coming from the north.
