67 percent? in math class thats a d, which means its a bad movie. how the hell can you give it a 67? fuck you rotten tomatoes, why dont you go make a movie and let me review it instead of bashing every single movie that comes out in order to make noise.
Shutter Island is real masterpiece - great acting, directing, producing, everything. Some moments were even scary. Leonardo DiCaprio is real master (Leo acts even better than Johnny Depp). Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo were great as well but I don't understand why so many people found the ending unpredictable. I predicted the ending after first 20-30 minutes. This movie is masterpiece but not as unpredictable as The Others, The Game, Identity, Fight Club, Cube 2 or The Prestige
I think it would be better if i watch annoying orange rather than this video. this was the third movie review i watched and all the movies are under rated. maybe what they want a very simple movie where there is no confusion or twist. maybe barney or dora the explorer can do.. well about the suspense, it actually showed us what rily happens on an insane mind and it makes us guess what the ending will be making it more exciting and making us focus more on the movie.
If you don't understand it and hate it because of that, you're a fucking idiot lol. Just because you're not smart enough to get a movie, doesn't mean it's bad
@angelchinky thats an opinion dipshit, just becuase your so self centered that you think your idea needs to be opinion of the world, doesnt make it true.
@marinlabyrinth yeah,, i understand, i mean there wasnt a labyrinth in it soo. i mean labyrinths are where its at.. and it was also directed towards the more intelligent portion of the population so i can see how you would be frustrated at not being able to stand it. you are so right.
@redhead363363 lol nice try honey, but I have a 99th percentile IQ.
Making something complicated does not make it intelligent, making something emotionally relatable makes it intelligent. Characterization>Bells and Whistles. There is plenty of complex media (Lost, The Matrix, Donnie Darko.....shall I go on??) THAT ACTUALLY HAS GOOD CHARACTERS.
Plus, labyrinths ARE where it's at. XD Ever heard of , I don't know, The Shining? Pan's Labyrinth? And dare I say it, Labyrinth?? (David Bowie kicks ass)
That rating is spot on! I felt like i'm having a deja vu through the whole movie. Like i've seen this movie before and it was therefore really predictable.
I wouldn't say it was bad, but if you've seen this sort of movies before, it was mediocre.
Wow honestly this entire review was done by Jack asses... They didn't really make any valide critasisms of the plot the mostly bitched about cinamatography and scoring...
@Chopstixz5 agreeeee. this is like the third movie review I have watched by them now and i want to claw their eyes out. they are soooo friggin annoying (regardless of their opinions)
@Kamaka2345 "....or was to stupid enough"? You're obviously one of the clever ones that got it...
I actually understood what Scorcese was TRYING to convey here and it was neither mysterious nor any kind of a "mind fuck". If you think this movie is so utterly brilliant, intriguing and thought provoking i.e: I guess, a "mind fuck"...well then, I guess it says more about your mental capacity and insight than it does about Scorcese's accomplishments....
THIS MOVIE WAS FUCKING BRILLIANT! Inception DOES NOT compare! There are so many small yet meticulous details incorporated to mess with your head and everything isn't explained step by step like Inception. I thought the ending of Shutter Island was more mind blowing than that spinning top. I've watched this movie many times and I'm still heartbroken every time I hear his screams of agony when he finds his children. Inception practically stole the Teddy Daniels character.
LOL. 67% you guys dont know shit about movies. you would probably give the The shawshank redemption the same score and give 99% to legally blond or the strangers, go fuck ur self, the movie was well made, no matter if you liked it or not. it had excellent character development, psychological background, historical background, and of course one of the best directors of all time and actors of all time

Anyway, beyond illegally downloading BAAAAAAAAAD versions of a GORGEOUS film, it NEEDS to be seen MANY times to sink in (for anyone and EVERYONE-NO-ONE I've watched it with "gets it", paying more attention to incoming text messages, etc), so it is just WONDERFUL to be able to grab your OWN (bought) DVD off the shelf and watch it on a LARGE Monitor with GREAT sound (indeed a highlight of this multi, MULTI-layered film!). "The Sound?", you mean Hollywood's BEST present to Gen Y -none of it being written FOR the film, but appropriated by Robbie Robertson, and team (Feldman, Cage, Scelsi, Ligeti, Scnittke and EVEN Nam June Paik! -people PLEASE check these guys out, as they are the A-list of 20th century Composers. This film gets better with each viewing, 2nd time 'round (knowing the twist) it's like "..Cuckoos nest" with Jack (Leo in this case) wearing his "Chinatown" get-up. 52nd viewing 4 me tonight: CANNOT WAIT!
Lol, this movie deserves A LOT more than 67%. This review is basically a dumbed-down explanation of the movie intended to reach the intellectually slower viewers who could not understand it and ended up hating it as a result.
@lisajean1 Good synopisis. That's why it irks me to hear people say they figured out the twist. Oh yeah? How on earth did they figure THAT out? They must be supernatural or have an out-of-this-world imagination. Okay, maybe they figured out something was off with Teddy. Who didn't after witnessing his first dream. But I seriously doubt anyone who hadn't read the book could've have predicted such an elaborate scheme. They need to be writing novels if they did. I'd read them.
@angelchinky Excuse me for the misunderstanding. I read your comment in a hurry and missed 'exactly' at the beginning of your comment , so I thought that rest was intended for me. --------Embarrassing.
Fuck you! Shutter Island was mind blowing! If you didn't like it, you write "u" instead of "you" and you are a complete retard. You probably didn't understand it, either. If you are a complete retard, of course you won't like it, but these films aren't made for complete retards, are they?
Crappy review. This movie is simply the best, and this review doesn't really imply that. It's way better than Inception. The people reviewing probably didn't go see the movie.
I think the reason you keep seeing these "The movie was ok, guess" reviews is because the movie was depicted as a scary movie in the trailer, and that is totally not the case, it's a psycological thriller: a movie where you can't turn your brain off.
I'm really disappointed with the mass number of people that really don't appreciate movies like this and Inception
@watcherthatboxer my all-time favorite types of movies! These movies are just 100% fun and I think every movie should tease your brain like this! I felt like I was on a ride at a theme park while watching Shutter Island its the first movie in awhile I have seen where I actually waited till the end to pee lmao
If you think this movie is unpredictable , of course it is .The whole movie is Leonardo Dicaprio , a mentally unstable person's imagination . If somebody could predict that , go see a psychiatrist.
The way they mock Scrosese's use of sound, close-ups, etc demonstrates how stupid & jaded they are. That's how it's supposed to be done. You dictate a mood with music and camera angles. I wonder what they would have done instead. How would they create suspense in a film if not for the use of sound and visuals. And for all the folks who claim they figured out the ending - exactly how? How does your brain deduce that ending? The ending is not logical, so I call bullshit.
Did anybody ever see Identity? I related Shutter Island to that movie too much to enjoy it, and honestly I think Identity did a better job of hiding the twist ending until the end.
this was an incredible movie. it was fuckin brilliant. and I agree with @sandwhichlol. it's for people who like to think while they're being entertained!
This is what I believe happened (there MIGHT be other explanations but after talking to a TON of ppl, I think I've got it!)
****SPOILER ALERT********
Teddy is really Andrew Laedis. He is a former federal marshall whose wife went crazy and killed their three children. He killed her because she asked him to "set her free." However, he cannot face this reality. He instead pretends that he is a federal marshall who has been sent to Shutter Island to investigate an escaped patient.
He has built up a fantasy world (like the fake Rachel, who supposedly pretends that the hospital is her home & her family is still alive). His doctors decide to let him act out his delusion so that he will be forced to face reality again. At the end, they succeed & he realizes that he is actually Laedis, not Teddy. He PRETENDS to relapse so that they will kill him. ("It's better to die a good man than live as a monster")
a lobotomy isn't fatal. I don't exactly remember though whether they said they would kill him or give him a lobotomy. I thought that the Ben Kingsley character said that he was too dangerous and that they would have to kill him. There is also the quote, "It's better to die a good man than live as a monster" (or something like that lol), which I think implies that he will die.
BUT I am not 100% sure about it being capital punishment and not a lobotomy, sorry.
@lisajean1 It was probably INTENDED for people who like to think wile being entertained throughout a movie, but it FAILED....and instead catered to that OTHER group, leading them to believe that they were actually clever for understanding the thing..
Unfortunately that's not the case, you're defending an ultimately failed attempt at conveying something profound and clever:))))))))))))))))))))))
I honestly hate these Rotten Tomatoes Show reviews. Its like they've compiled a group of the most annoying and condescending hipsters on the planet THEN asked them to review movies. I'm pretty sure this will be the last time I ever watch their review.
soo is he crazy or not???..at the end he told his so called partner that they are to smart for them and his partner was going along with it but ppl say he is crazy...
This guy in the blue shirt is trying too hard to be funny. I wanna snuff him. And don't listen to them, it's an amazing movie, I give it a full 5. It has such a crazy twist to it. So creative and thought out, deff worth watching. Don't look to critics for the review of a movie. They get payed to talk negatively
i just watched shutter island last night i liked\loved it because i'm a HUGE leonardo dicaprio fan but i knew where the movie was gonna go as soon as it started but i watched it anyway. i give this movie 4 stars
The ending to this movie kinda pissed me off...he went through all of this and watched it all, and he, well I will not spoil the endingbut if any of you guys have seen it, you knowwhat I mean
that's what i want to know. Does he basically have himself killed at the end? Remember he say's "Would you rather live as a monster, or die a good man" as if he wants to die for feeling guilty of his children's death
well. this movie was only good for people with more then 1 brain cell. What they did in this movie, was create a complex series of riddles you can answer yourself in many ways, Example the ending can be taken in many ways. the movie is alot more satisfying if your smart enough to think of all the possible stuff that could happen in the movie. Like was he actually crazy at the end? or did he just want to die becuase he learned the truth?
@sandwichlol Well, ironically, Synecdoche New York got a sixty-eight percent, which is similar to this movie. You actually have to think. Which... people don't like, apparently.
@sandwichlol Would it be better to live as a monster, or to die a good man? Then again he didn't literally DIE, but a good lobotomy was bound to wipe out any conscious awareness of the "monster" he so badly didn't want to be. I took that to mean he hadn't truly recessed into his delusions, but decided he couldn't live with his own reality anymore... better to go under the hooks and live out his days as a vegetable. Like you say though, that last line left everything open to interpretation.
@sandwichlol A very intellectual comment coming from a guy named sandwichlol.... he he he. But actually; there's no question at the end that he died because he didn't want to live as a monster, why would anybody think that he's still a fool at the ending.
@sandwichlol I believe the only reason that it is so much more geared towards a more intelligent group of people is because of the slow pacing. I just think it could have been done a wee bit better
@sandwichlol BOTH, he wanted to die cuz he realized the truth that he was crazy, but he faked being crazy to the doctors, so they would put him down once and for all, he obviously didn't want to go trough it all over again
@sandwichlol It sounds like you disliked the movie. You actually need "brain cells" to understand, fully, what's happening. People with only one brain cell would just ask questions constantly throughout until they see the big twist in the end. The end might make people wonder the same thing your saying, but really he just wanted to die. Remember when he said, "Would you rather live as a monster or to die as a hero." Something like that, but anyway, the riddles can be solved with common sense.
It's the ones that actually does have "brain cells" that are able to see this movie for what it is; a failed attempt at oh so many things.Even if the director's name is Scorcese you shouldn't automatically let your brain go into slumber mode and give it a 10/10.
Could you please explain to me what's so complex and intriguing about this veritable flop?
I guess you, like a LOT of other people defending this movie, are unable to come up with a decent argument and instead retort to personal attacks
great movie

AlbinoPolarBears 1 year ago
@AlbinoPolarBears I actually agree it is better than inception

God damn, the movie deserved more than 67%
I think the reason you keep seeing these "The movie was ok, guess" reviews is because the movie was depicted as a scary movie in the trailer, and that is totally not the case, it's a psycological thriller: a movie where you can't turn your brain off.
I'm really disappointed with the mass number of people that really don't appreciate movies like this and Inception
watcherthatboxer 1 year ago
@watcherthatboxer my all-time favorite types of movies! These movies are just 100% fun and I think every movie should tease your brain like this! I felt like I was on a ride at a theme park while watching Shutter Island its the first movie in awhile I have seen where I actually waited till the end to pee lmao

WTF!? This movie is amazing!! Bad sounds effects and acting?? Yeah, Brett was right about working with a bunch of mental patients :P
MisterModder123 1 year ago
If you think this movie is unpredictable , of course it is .The whole movie is Leonardo Dicaprio , a mentally unstable person's imagination . If somebody could predict that , go see a psychiatrist.
balwindergill1 1 year ago
The way they mock Scrosese's use of sound, close-ups, etc demonstrates how stupid & jaded they are. That's how it's supposed to be done. You dictate a mood with music and camera angles. I wonder what they would have done instead. How would they create suspense in a film if not for the use of sound and visuals. And for all the folks who claim they figured out the ending - exactly how? How does your brain deduce that ending? The ending is not logical, so I call bullshit.

It is not predictiable because you can see it from 2 different point of views.. (hope you understand my point here)

Did anybody ever see Identity? I related Shutter Island to that movie too much to enjoy it, and honestly I think Identity did a better job of hiding the twist ending until the end.

@lisajean1 can u explain what the fuck happened in this move....i am lost as FUCK
wikedman6 1 year ago
@wikedman6
He instead pretends that he is a federal marshall who has been sent to Shutter Island to investigate an escaped patient.
lisajean1 1 year ago
@wikedman6
**SPOILER ALERT**
He has built up a fantasy world (like the fake Rachel, who supposedly pretends that the hospital is her home & her family is still alive). His doctors decide to let him act out his delusion so that he will be forced to face reality again. At the end, they succeed & he realizes that he is actually Laedis, not Teddy. He PRETENDS to relapse so that they will kill him. ("It's better to die a good man than live as a monster")
Is that good? ask more if you want :)
lisajean1 1 year ago
@lisajean1 I thought they gave him a lobotamy. Is a lobotamy fatal?
martiangoomba 1 year ago
@martiangoomba
a lobotomy isn't fatal.
BUT I am not 100% sure about it being capital punishment and not a lobotomy, sorry.
lisajean1 1 year ago
@lisajean1 It was probably INTENDED for people who like to think wile being entertained throughout a movie, but it FAILED....and instead catered to that OTHER group, leading them to believe that they were actually clever for understanding the thing..
Unfortunately that's not the case, you're defending an ultimately failed attempt at conveying something profound and clever:))))))))))))))))))))))

@videogamer618 Rotten tomatoes is almost always full of BS. I love them, but their reviews are shit.

@videogamer618 they always make really lame reviews for good movies... really bad reviews! don't let it get to u!

I honestly hate these Rotten Tomatoes Show reviews. Its like they've compiled a group of the most annoying and condescending hipsters on the planet THEN asked them to review movies. I'm pretty sure this will be the last time I ever watch their review.

This guy in the blue shirt is trying too hard to be funny. I wanna snuff him. And don't listen to them, it's an amazing movie, I give it a full 5. It has such a crazy twist to it. So creative and thought out, deff worth watching. Don't look to critics for the review of a movie. They get payed to talk negatively

that's what i want to know. Does he basically have himself killed at the end? Remember he say's "Would you rather live as a monster, or die a good man" as if he wants to die for feeling guilty of his children's death

@killertone83 he wants to die because he killed his wife who killed his kids and he felt like a monster
Rockhead1997 1 year ago
well. this movie was only good for people with more then 1 brain cell. What they did in this movie, was create a complex series of riddles you can answer yourself in many ways, Example the ending can be taken in many ways. the movie is alot more satisfying if your smart enough to think of all the possible stuff that could happen in the movie. Like was he actually crazy at the end? or did he just want to die becuase he learned the truth?
sandwichlol 1 year ago 62
@sandwichlol
I don't know what you mean, seeing as how finding out the truth is actually finding out he was crazy.
rafayealmeida 1 year ago
@rafayealmeida sandwichlol meant that he found out the truth about shutter island, about the experiments on people and all.

@sandwichlol You are SOOOOOO right.
ebianca33 1 year ago
@sandwichlol Absolutely agree, people should start using their brain to enjoy this kind of movie
Ersguterplaya1337 1 year ago
@sandwichlol Well, ironically, Synecdoche New York got a sixty-eight percent, which is similar to this movie. You actually have to think. Which... people don't like, apparently.
Uhhxhi 1 year ago
@sandwichlol I agree
DoryokuFiripin 1 year ago
@sandwichlol Would it be better to live as a monster, or to die a good man? Then again he didn't literally DIE, but a good lobotomy was bound to wipe out any conscious awareness of the "monster" he so badly didn't want to be. I took that to mean he hadn't truly recessed into his delusions, but decided he couldn't live with his own reality anymore... better to go under the hooks and live out his days as a vegetable. Like you say though, that last line left everything open to interpretation.
7heRagingAngeI 1 year ago
@sandwichlol yeah the movie inception does that to it just has you thinking through the whole movie
pargauskaspranas 1 year ago
@sandwichlol A very intellectual comment coming from a guy named sandwichlol.... he he he. But actually; there's no question at the end that he died because he didn't want to live as a monster, why would anybody think that he's still a fool at the ending.
ShookerTrooper 1 year ago
@sandwichlol I believe the only reason that it is so much more geared towards a more intelligent group of people is because of the slow pacing. I just think it could have been done a wee bit better
TWeisbergPhoto2 1 year ago
@sandwichlol BOTH, he wanted to die cuz he realized the truth that he was crazy, but he faked being crazy to the doctors, so they would put him down once and for all, he obviously didn't want to go trough it all over again
rwasta7007 1 year ago
@sandwichlol It sounds like you disliked the movie. You actually need "brain cells" to understand, fully, what's happening. People with only one brain cell would just ask questions constantly throughout until they see the big twist in the end. The end might make people wonder the same thing your saying, but really he just wanted to die. Remember when he said, "Would you rather live as a monster or to die as a hero." Something like that, but anyway, the riddles can be solved with common sense.
bigdogrecordz2010 1 year ago
It's the ones that actually does have "brain cells" that are able to see this movie for what it is; a failed attempt at oh so many things.Even if the director's name is Scorcese you shouldn't automatically let your brain go into slumber mode and give it a 10/10.
Could you please explain to me what's so complex and intriguing about this veritable flop?
I guess you, like a LOT of other people defending this movie, are unable to come up with a decent argument and instead retort to personal attacks
