  • Whitaker sure likes hugs.

  • Whitaker took him to school in this fight. Both are among my top five favorites all-time though.

  • it was a draw because in order for a fighter to defeat a champ he need to punish him not just out box him chavez did not look beat up that is why it was a draw look at all the fight and the only time the champ loses is when hes face looks f up and the challenger is all clean

  • run, hug and dirty shots, that is a great fight????? jajaja lol

What a diference of the Greatest ALI (DANCE AND FIGHT) .. sorry i like the boxing defense style but that fight is bizarre.. Pernell 32-1 maybe win by slap points but is more young than chavez (33) with 87-0 .. the fact is chavez prime is a mothaFuc assasin unbeatable pit bull . The record speaks for itself. floyd too get a gift with castillo and DLH. DLH with Trinidad etc etc

floyd style is more cleaner than Whitaker

  • I had it 117-111 for Whitaker and even then i was generous to Chavez. This was an exhibition by Whitaker and why was there no rematch?

  • 2 complete legends, for me pernell is the most technicly perfect fighter ive ever seen,no one does hit and dont get hit better than sweet pea,

  • taylor got robbed to> he would have survived 9 seconds.

  • @shannontomsik TAYLOR DID NOT GET ROBBED CUS IF YOU LOOK WHEN HE GOT KNOCK DOWN THE REF ASK HIM TWICE ARE YOU OK ARE YOU OK AND HE DID NOT RESPOND WHICH MEANS EVEN IF IT WAS ONLY ONE SECOND LEFT HE WAS OUT

  • i dont understand...how this was a draw ?

  • Someone please explain to me how this fight was even close.

  • @Sniper219 thats what i was wondering.

  • i agree that this was a robbery, because Whittaker shouldve been DQed,he's a dirty bitch

  • One of the worst decisions in the history of boxing. Whittaker took this fight hands down. he controlled the fight from start to finish. He was a master.

  • pendejos. chavez es mejor ke toda esa pichi bola de cuervos.

  • I remember scoring this fight with a couple of buddies who were fighters. we all gave it to Witaker by a comfortable margin even though we all dug Chavez. Witaker was one of the smoothest fight ever when he was at the top of his game. Chavez is lucky to have an iron chin that night because he was getting clocked very often. I Loved witakers ability to totally nulify Chavez' power!!! Meldrick had the right idea but couldn't get out of the why.

  • Whitiker was the man period. Never ducked anyone and even fought the young lions late into his career, unlike alot of these guys today (Floyd and Pac) who ignore or have promoters talk thier way out of fighting young champions. Gotta respect greatness from a guy who's losses and draws are all debated besides the trinadad (a beast young lion) fight. The guy fought anyone, ANYWHERE. He has went to many fighter's hometowns and knew in his head that they wasn't messin with him.

  • robbery

  • Whitaker was a dirty figher hold chavez arms he is a loser

  • @spartantournament Whitiker was puttin on a clinic. Mentally on the outside, Whitiker had chavez losing a guessing game and kept him fustrated of the jab while on the back foot firing combinations. He also took chavez to smother school showing him how throw combinations shoulder to shoulder, as well as coming out of close quaters. In and out, then while in range he showed chavez why he is considered the best defensive fighter of all time in the eyes of some. Whitiker definately won.

  • your danm right this was no draw that dirty fighter should have had way to many points taken away

  • im suprised candy didnt pour out of chavez from all those hits{ human pinata}

  • maybe Pernell did not have enough points taken away for his sloppyness

  • Watch how Pernell backs up Chavez every time he gets sloppy, and too aggressive.

Lightening shots, on the counter, backing the guy up every time.

What Floyd will do to Pacquiao.

Give me a break that's a close fight?! Easy UD

  • @MrCeej9999

hhahahah sloppy by low blows pathetic dirty figther never deserve this fight ....

  • Chavez vs. Whittaker = Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

Same result - Floyd's skills too much

  • Salvador Sanchez would have given Whitaker a better fight then Chavez

  • Sweet Pea whupped that ass...this was one of the worst decisions ever. Don King and the rest of them crooks were only concerned about getting Chavez to 100-0 but we all know Pea won that fight, then Frankie Randall handled him anyway

  • sweet pea WON this fight

  • chavez is tough as hell. whitaker never really did hurt him. but sweet pea made him look outclassed and chavez never did much to whtiaker. JCC clearly lost to a better fighter.

  • Don't b stupid all u haters chavez never stopped fightin those shots did nothin to chavez what was it Whitaker that did not want the rematch

  • Duran would have ripped Whitaker apart.

  • Chavez was an overated bum, any fights he won were due to terrible judging ( JUST ASK WHITAKER)' most of the fights Ive seen hes usually geting his ass handed to him

  • @KleioCotto but he never got kod like the bitches he kod before he went 90-0 so shut the fuk up n watch the pros nfuk taylor2 bitch ass monkey

  • @1stnaruto Talk boxing and stop your racist words.

  • @KleioCotto Then you haven't seen enough Chavez was a great fighter. Whittaker beating him like he did shows Whittaker's greatness. Chavez usually dominated fighters and Taylor was a ruined fighter after his fight with him his resiliency beat out of him. However Sweet Pea did get robbed and I think Taylor did also they should have let him finish the fight or at least try no matter how much time was left but a few secs left shorted a courageous Philly fighter from perhaps his only great moment .

  • whitaker didn't get the decision because he hugged to much......he tried that with DelaHoya and got kicked out of Dodge

  • this fight went the distence so i give cesar chavez a draw!!

  • Chavez was great but Whitaker was greater.

  • @PREZ150 witaker was2weak to me the strong are great not the weak that nigger monkey did not go 90-0

  • Why isnt Chavez punching? He didnt look like the aggresive Chavez of old looks like he went in 2 get hit doesnt even throw combos wtf Whitaker was a good fighter except he hugged 2much looks like he wants 2 kiss Chavez dam I think he hugged more times than Chavez threw punches

  • Whitaker, the hugging champion.

  • sweet pea beat the fuck out of chavez. this is coming from a huge chavez fan.

  • Ur honesty is greatly appreciated..................I remember this fight and was disappointed with the score and I liked both of them.

  • why did steele have to take a point away from whittaker, cuz seet pea really needs to get his shit off but the germans wont seem to let him

  • Ha! Up in the MGM coked up psych.....

  • hahahaha WU TANG

  • there is no way you can compare floy to pernell... i mean pernell could do it all, and he could fight inside.. Floyd only runs.. pernell had all the tools. it they were both at their primes today floyd would look ridiculus against sweet pea

  • @parracatau Floyd dose not only run he proved that against shane.

  • @Archangel3127 shane? he got rocked a long time ago wayb4that u make it seem like he was fighting pacquiao

  • mayweather and whitaker are so damn similar

  • @truthseeker215 no there not pernell is a south paw floyd is orthdox big diff

  • @lucky70duce fuck man? shut the hell up! just because one guy stands one way and the other guy a different way dosent mean they are not similar and how can u even call yourself a boxing fan if you dont see how close mayweeather and whitaker were

  • Im not a boxing fan i am boxer a south paw does more than stand diffrent you fucking dumbass whitaker and mayweather are totaly diff obviously you dont know shit about boxing

  • i dbout it very much i mean the fact that you say mayweather and whitaker are not similar shows me you know very little about the sport whitaker took more chances then mayweather whitaker commited more to his punches then floyd dose floyd is harder puncher with one punch but he dosent put his combos togeather as well as pernell dose

  • it so clear you dont know shit about boxing a guy wuth only 17knockouts in 46 fights buts his punches together good hahahahaha you dont know shit about boxing man even whitaker him self will tell you he is no puncher everybody in the game knows him for his defense stop flip floping to what im saying because you dont know shit about boxing mayweather and whitaker are not so damn similar just a littel you cant even spell similar you fucking dumbass

  • im not going to write a big ass post for you and explain all this diff comparing maywether and whitaker is like appels and oranges whitaker pitty pats mayweather has more power in shots

  • @truthseeker215, lucky is right....both defensive first fights but thats where the similarities end. Stances......No Mayweather Shoulder roll for Pernell.....and no Squatting to his knees to avoid punches like Pernell for Floyd....Pernell constantly pumps the jab....Floyd seldomly uses his....Lead left is the money punch for Pernell.....counter right is the money punch for Floyd. .....Floyd superfundamentally sound and Pernel always threw out the rule book.

  • on the surface..similar but under further inspection....vastly different

  • Whitaker got robbed in this fight, in know way was this a draw

  • Don King wanted them to fight again, but something never allowed it to happen. Sweet Pea was a helluva fighter with great style.

  • @jarel101

you're right...i remember watching this fight fight as a kid and distinctly remember the two fights before this bout...the first fight went the distance and a winner was announced. Don King himself I got ahold of the microphone inside the ring and there was an announcement that the score cards were miscounted. A recount and all of a sudden that first fight was a draw.

  • whittaker is my last name, lol

  • dude ur such an ignorant racist piece of shit .. its kinda funny in a way

  • Are you mad you did not get a raise at your job as a janitor at Wal-Mart? Wal-Mart is makin millions off you cleaning their toilets. Garbage mouth.

  • Im a Chavez fan and Pernell should have got the decision even tough I think sweet pea was a boring fighter. Lou Duva in an RING magazine admitted that they avoided Chavez years before because Chavez was better than Pea at that time.

  • Sal Sanchez would have beat both

  • Sanchez was great, but at 126lbs? no way, no shot he's coming up to 147 to fight these two, not a shot

  • crybabies lmao go Chavez

  • jones in 88, whitaker here, holyfield recently against valuev. all complete bullshit calls

  • lmao stop crying move on

  • This was one of the biggest robberies I ever saw in boxing. I remember the night of the fight and the day after, it was pure BS. Chavez was a good champion but on his best day he was nowhere in the same realm as Whitaker. Chavez knew he got his ass whipped.

  • Nowhere in the same realm as Whitaker? Everybody remembers Chavez, his record speaks for himself. His fights are watched many times and he is known and cheered everywhere, Pernell?? Hahaha. He was just hugging and running. He should be thankful he didn´t fight Julio 3 years earlier, he would have ended in the morgue.

  • hugging and running ? all sweet peas hugging and running was certainly snapping Chavez' head back a lot -

strange what all that running and hugging can achieve .

    fucktard .

  • @budfr The only reason Chavez was more remembered is because he had all of MEXICO behind him. Pernell was a brash black fighter, run of the mill. He beat chavez this day or any day. He was the better boxer. Whittaker got robbed here and against de la hoya. Chavez got ktfo by de la hoya twice. No comparison of who is better. Whittaker all the way.

  • @twiceasnice45 All of Mexico?? Of course, but remember Whitaker was American, and American media also had great words for Chavez. Whitaker had people on his side, mostly blacks and some reporters, but the hardcore fans were with Chavez because he was aggressive, powerful and not a hugger. Whitaker ran for half his fights. Better boxer?? Better runner.hugger in my opinion. This is the reason why in Mexico and Latin America ( except Ricans) people prefer pacman and not Mayweather. The latter bores

  • @budfr Boxing is boxing. It's not stand there and throw punches, that's called MMA.

  • Chavez was definantly in the same 'realm' as Whitaker, if not better. He's undoubtedly has more of a 'legend status' than Pernell. Dont get it twisted though I'm a Pernell fan, and he was so blaitenly robbed in this. Think this was a career defining performance from Sweet Pea- just a shame he was up against corrupt/blind judges.

  • jones getting robbed in 88 AND this fight were two of the biggest screwjobs in boxing imo

  • Como sea pero "pernell" perdiooo!! CHAVEZ lo encimo toooda la pelea...ya superenlo...

  • It is funny how you don't see too many Mexican commenting on this one. Pernell was robbed!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah. no i wont take a thing from chavez, the guy is a legend as far as im concerned. but sweet pea clearly won this fight.

  • Comment removed

  • The judges just robbed this man. It don't matter if he was out of his prime or whatever. If thats the case then he shouldn't of been in the ring. The just robbed that man of this fight back then.

  • History? Yeah, it was a historic robbery.

  • alot of things to consider chavez at this point of his career was already a drunk, coke head, and wife beater jaja seriously though he was !!!! also was his first fight as a welterweight which was 145 i believe. all his fights were at light welter which was 140 and below. in this fight he seem tired ..he look like shit. maybe the bad life and extra weight caught to him. this man was a beast but the bad life caught up to him. today i know for a fact that he is always on coke everyday. shame

  • how do you know for a fact? were you there?..........uhhh nope.

  • uhhhh .......yeah i have

  • he sold him the coke...lol

  • another travesty! first tayler then pernell. its rediculous

  • this is alot worse than taylor....i dont blame the ref with taylor he prolly kinda fucked up but taylor dint answer twice when asked if he was ok

  • MOTHERFUCKIN ROBBERY!

  • One of the first big fights I saw as a kid. Also a day I grew up with the reality of boxing judges.

  • Don't get me wrong, I love Chavez. He's one of my great idols, and on another night he way have won. But I'm also a realistic person. Whitaker won this fight.

And there is no shame in losing to an all time great like Pernell Whitaker.

  • nobody looks good against pernell

  • Sweet Pea.... Enough said...

  • Robbery.

  • to much low blows from witiker but all chavez needed to doe was time him wait for a jab from witiker pull his head back to his left then come back with a left jab followed by a right hook. but chavez got frustrated and that's all a guy like witiker needs. classic fight

  • Whitaker dominated the fight. At worst you can score it 8-4 for him and even then that's a stretch. It's amazing that he even beat Chavez in the exchanges. JCC got hit with some big power punches.

  • Well it depends on who is scoring the fight, He got out worked but you cant see that in the video because these are just the Highlights not the full fight.

  • whitaker and taylor were robbed of their fights with chavez.

  • Whitaker > Ali

    maybe Whitaker = Ali

  • niggers

  • spics

  • whitaker= boring fighter

    another mayweather

  • are you kidding me?

A fighter who never gets hit.

  • I scored the fight 9-3 for Whitaker. He boxed beautifully, there's a reason the sport is called "the sweet science", he moved, he made JCC fight his fight, and controlled the action. Whitaker had his greatest win ever stolen from him

  • If you wanted to take Chavez throne he should of Ko him, but he didn't!!! so stop complainting!!!

  • lol. Man i give Chavez his prop's he was a great one. But, he had no chance when he ran into Sweet Pea. Just two different styles bro. The art of boxing, to hit and not be hit. I still think Chavez will be able to wipe his arse when he's 70. He didn't have a heavy hitter in this fight and he gave more punishment than he took in his career. Peace

  • .....worst justification for a robbed victory I have ever seen, period.

"If you can't KO him you don't deserve to win!" Did it occur to you that not all boxing styles revolve around a knockout, and that some fighters with iron chins have *never* been knocked out?

Too much idiocy to deal with it all in one post. I give up. You're a blind idiot whose mexican name betrays all the bias I'll ever need to see.

  • Robbery?? to chavez. He went forward the whole time, chasing whitaker, who probably landed more shots but none of them hurt chavez. Guys like whitaker began the " fad" of huggin, running, throwing slaps. He even hugged after he threw a punch! Chavez was a bit past his prime here, and still chased whitaker all over the ring.

  • YOUR FULL OF SHIT!!!!!!!!!

  • Chavez got his ass whooooooooped

  • To hit and not be hit. The art of boxing

  • Not sure what fight yer watchin guys, Whitaker won this fight clearly and decisively, he woulda knocked him out if he had more power.

  • yeah?? he won in the hugging-running department. check for example at 1 : 50, whitaker huged even after landing a shot!! you will never see a mexican doing that pussy stuff.

  • Yeah, he won in the hugging-runnng department and he also won in the clown a wetback department also! LOL Styles make fights, TWINKIE. Chavez was a pressure fighter and Whitaker was a slick boxer with great defense and footwork, he used those assets in this fight because he knew he could'nt knock him out. Chavez loss this fight!!, and some intelligent wetback have admitted it, DUMBASS!!!!!

  • Wet back? Come on bro. It's obvious that Sweet Pea won. No need for racist comment's, it's about change. Where's the intelligence?

  • The way I score each round is simple win = effective offense vs effective defense. Offense is essential in the sport so more important of the two. Offensively PW had little to offer round by round except for four rounds. JCC offense was not as domnt but a little more effective. Then you look at D's and both PW and JCC displayed great D. PW D used lateral movement, jab and not risking. JCC D was headmovement, pressure and blocking. Both were equally effective. JCC won on a 10 pt sys

  • Chavez was totally out-classed, out-boxed, and out-punched....its called boxing....Whitaker was robbed!

  • tiene razon budfr el whitaker era una cobarde. A lo mejor era su estrategia pero que no mame.

Whitaker was a chiken boy. He runaway all the time, maybe strategy but come on, its borin to see somebody who runs all time

  • Floyd Mayweather Jnr best fits the description of a boxer who runs all the time. Whitaker was a defensive genius and wasn't afraid to stand toe to toe when he had to.

  • Mexican or not. He lost the fight, period. I know you idol Chavez, and that's cool, he will go down as one of my greatest fighter's. But, like it or not that pussy stuff got him in trouble when he faced Sweet Pea. You don't have to give him prop's Pea is one of the G.O.A.T and no one can dispute it. To hit and not be hit.

  • Chavez kicked his ass clearly!!!!! A robbery!!!!

  • Utter nonsense pal! Whitaker whupped him! disgrace of a result! Whitaker's friend Meldrick Taylor was also denied victory against Chavez in dubious fashion!

  • hahahaha, yeah and bears can fly like birds and mice can bark like dogs!!!!

  • nah, he was getting his ass kicked

  • Comment removed

  • chavez jr and sr is really the same..they always let their oponnent punch their face..its like they dont mind..

  • ii watched this fight over and over and i stii cant see how this was called a draw. JCC was a great boxer but on this night he was clearly outclassed period.

  • they only show whitaker highlights here, i admit whitaker slightly took it but it was really close, a draw is sort of fair.

  • You must be on dust!!!!!

  • A ROBBERY...this is as clear as someone going into a bank, nothing hiding their face, gun point blank in the face, demanding money, and saying"THIS IS A ROBBERY"!!

  • thanks i enjoyed that

  • i know what ur sayen...i seem to favor brawlers or inside fighters.....jabing and running around isnt exciting...yes hes good but id rather watch someone else fight

  • damn Whitaker was robbed.

  • See man, this is the same old shit. People like heavy-hitters, and show-boaters, and people with big personalities better than they like technical boxers. People think that winning by decision isn't real winning, and amazing boxers like Whitaker get forgotten. It's the same reason almost all listings of greatest heavyweights has Dempsey above Tunney. It's very sad.

  • Whitaker won this fight and was robbed.

  • Yeah, Chavez lost this fight. But going 87-0 before truly tasting defeat is a good accomplishment in itself, the fight was quite boring with no real memorable moments (until the shocking outcome at the end). And for the people whether black or Mexican who have to resort to racial insults it shows nothing but ignorance on your part.

  • whitaker beat the shit out of chavez

  • Comment removed

  • what fight were you watching, pernell clearly won the the fight ,out boxed ,out landed, and at one point stood toe to toe

  • JCC won this fight jajajajajajajajaja, yeah and mice can bark and bears can fly high like birds!!!!! GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!!!!!

  • yeah fuckin chavez wasnt fightin a smart fight and whitaker was and plus wat a great D

  • don't overlook Tito Trinidad a modern day warrior! and at 147 could of hung in there with the best of them.

  • Your troll attempt failed. Let it go.

  • don't understand your jargon? troll?

  • chavez came to fight, like always, whitaker is good, but his fights are never exciting

  • Chavez is a 1 trick pony!

Chavez, Gomez & Pryor are the most overrated fighters in recent memory.

  • chavez overrated? gettin to 87-0 overrated? LMFAO, name another recent so called "great" that came even close? lol

  • Chavez like Pryor and Gomez didn't even debut at 1 of the original 8 weight divisions? fought a lot of blown up featherweights after they'd been softened up the much greater Salvador Sanchez.

  • oh salvador sanchez is the greatest, i dont care what u say, chavez is second to him, and to say chavez fougth soft fighters shows u know nothing about boxing, Meldrick taylor was the baddest mutha in the world, and had the gold medal to prove it, thats soft? lol, rosario soft? la porte was soft to huh, wow

  • would you not agree the Taylor fight was controversial? could you honestly say Rosario was a great fighter? a damn good one yes! but damn the word "great" get used very loosely these days? LaPorte that's another story? like I said softened up by the great Sal Sanchez and even so? he gave Chavez all he could handle considering he's a natural featherweight.

  • controversial because they didnt give meldrick the last 3 seconds for free? that wouldnt be fair to chavez, it is what it is, if it wasnt for those ropes, he cant get up, watch the vid dude, ur wrong again, barrera, morales, are really good boxers, chavez and salv are in another league, thats great, floyd think at 39-0 and fighting all those non significant opponents is great, lol, thats aight in my book, Tito trinidad, oscar, gomez, la porte, are really good, but cant be in sentence wit jc n SS

  • forget the ropes? point is he made it back to his feet! it was a judgment call on the part of Steele? now weather he was part of the apparatus working for Don King on Chavez's behalf? that's another story? I think the point your getting across is that Sal was the greatest from Mexico? in which I concur. But as for Chavez being #2? I strongly disagree! many people overlook Olivares a 3 time champion just like Chavez with a record of 100 fights and 77 KO's. All his opponents were in their primes.

  • well said, sal is the greatest mexican that has ever lived to box, no doubt about that, but chavez has to be 2, 87-0 c'mon, that is hard shit, olivarez is 3 in my book, just as good, but i gave the slight advantage for chavez,

  • Chavez 3rd. Olivares was superior!

  • yea that why he couldnt get to 87-0 uh, chavez took out meldrick taylor, end of story, he was the baddest gold medalist at the time, olivarez never fought someone of that calliber

  • what? actually he fought a real professional and fellow all-time great in Arguello. Now Chavez never fought anyone like that before.

  • meldrick taylor kid, go do ur homework

  • I know who Taylor is; what about him?

  • he was one bad muthafucka, one of the scariest boxers i have seen in my life

  • the way I see it: Chavez didn't even debut at 1 of the original 8 weight divisions; he started at 130 a jr/super division? Olivares at was a 2 division champ, but only his were 118&126; 2 of the original 8. As for Chavez the opposite the only real championship that counts is 135 the 130 and 140 were just adornments.

  • of course all gringo assholes see whitakers,,,,winner...but the true stand up....and the true is MEXICAN PRIDE RULE........assholes gringos......

  • The worst decision ever.

I don't know how many flush shots Pennel landed but they were so many.

The fight was staged in that shithole state of Texas and the decision was not surprising offcourse.

    Stupid TEXANS!!!!!!!!!!

  • I sorta feel bad fr sweet pea, he wuz robbed of several fights in hs career tht he shoulda won

Fr Ex: De La Hoya-Whitaker, and Ramirez

  • There are heavyweight fights in 16 foot boxing rings. These two small fighters fought in a 22 foot ring! This definately helped whitaker run around. Chavez still landed his shots. See the interview after the fight. Whitaker's face has more punishment than in any other fight in his career.

  • mambosando: You make a good point; the size of the ring did favor Sweet Pea, but Whitaker didn't use all of the ring throughout the fight. There were extended periods throughout the fight where Sweet Pea traded punches w/ Chavez. And Chavez LOSS THE IN-FIGHTING PART OF THE FIGHT!!! That was his specialty. Sweet Pea beat him at his own game.

One of the worst decisions in the history of boxing.

    Period.

  • at least somebody makes sense yell

  • why everybody says Whitaker won? los dos se dieron con todo, both make a lot of clean punches, well if run(1 point for every mile) and land low blows makes points, then yes, sweet pea won.

  • you sound stupid as fucc hahahaha yell

  • I like Chavez but Pernell won he was robbed in both the Chavez and De la hoya fight.

  • whitaker was robbed
