WOW!!! How did they do this without us knowing? This is major legislation starting a slippery slope. I listen to NPR every day I wonder why they never picked it up.
Basically for the last 30 years our fuel economy has been flat to a bit south. What has happened is we have cars that are capable of being more fuel-efficient but instead consumers have chosen more horsepower over fuel economy. It makes sense when gas is cheap. Today a minivan is faster than a muscle car of the 70s. I've checked the numbers. Since we live in a free society it is our right to choose but the government wants to force us to choose lower power/higher fuel efficiency.
They are doing so under the guise of forcing car companies to improve fuel efficiency. People will go along because they don't understand what is really going on. They think it is between the gov and the auto companies when really it is the gov making their shopping decisions for them.
Reality will set in when people get in their new 2015 car, stomp the gas, and it takes off like a 1984 Dodge Caravan--or it's a hybrid and it costs $5000 more. $5000 is enough to drive a 25mpg (today's mandated average) vehicle 41,666 miles at today's prices.
wow governmet stupidity strikes again. We are deeply in need of a herd thinning when it comes to our so called leaders.

What's so great about top-loaders? Just get a front-loader. Big deal. I hear you can't get any good colors in lead paint anymore either.

NPR???? Surely you don't expect the government disinformation machine to rat on the government itself?????

More expensive *and* worse performance? Sounds like a government solution to me.
