I would assume the girl is sitting in front of a green screen when she's flying, if you notice how straight she's holding her legs out. The scene with the flowers? You can tell she was being pulled/pushed by something.

I find it a cross over between America and Britain, as a lot of the humor is very British. That's just the case with the film though, the book isn't Americanized.
