  • Variants of Theo's Strandbeest are available as 3D printed working models from Shapeways[.]com - they're awesome!

  • Is this the new BMW? Sweet

  • I saw this genius in a conference last night, I even had the chance to talk with him and take a picture with the man. What an inspiring genius he is, and a great talker, I loved the way he explained his projects and philosophy.

  • Holy sh*t!

    That's sickkkkk! :O

  • HOLLAND FTW!

  • Awesome!

  • but, does it blend ?

  • @EspadaAPJ Please don't inflict any more of your overdone memes on us poor video watchers, it's rather rude.

  • Make them reproduce and evolve. Then, you sir have won.

  • WTF does this have to do with BMW???

  • but can they mate?

  • So awesome I can barely comprehend why this is not more common!

  • its a live

  • Comment removed

  • whoah they totaly wreked it by having ''BMW ' at the end

  • God these things are gorgeous.

  • another part of me is a robot……music stops

  • Audio is way too early, but still awesome except for BMW commercial.

  • IM AT THE WRONG BEACH!! ... thanx ollie

  • Actually glompofie, steampunk is using Victorian technology to create things with modern uses.

  • Holy shit! That MOVES!!!

  • Since I was a little child, I always believed in my heart that any thing we can imagine is possible in this Universe. If the Soul is infinite by nature so is the Universe, The fantastic journey of discovery is up to us explorers and find our way to realize our dreams. I love the quote Theo Jansen made, that "The barrier between Art and Architecture is imaginary" Just like the 4 forces of the Universe seemed separate. This is what great enlighten masters meant by saying we are all one.

  • amazing magical!

  • He uses always the same mechanism in his creations to move them.

  • A German Techno Dance tune from Shoutcast works much better for me on this vid then what they used. Seems more up / fun.

  • This man is the living definition of steampunk.

  • @percussionbell actually not really.. steampunk uses the idea of steam powered things. He's like windpunk lol or maybe woodpunk x) Kineticpunk!

  • windpink, maybe:)

  • @LaimonasP I couild go for that. :D

  • @percussionbell There is no steam in his machines

  • @JapaneseModernist I'm aware of that. But his works would at home in a steampunk setting. Wind power and steam are both still air being put to use. These aren't that far removed from each other.

  • @percussionbell u r living in a fuck head of hell

  • @jn6verse51 ...Dude...really? I really fail how you can make any assumptions about my lifestyle based on a comment I made 3 months ago.

  • @percussionbell becuz bitch, im yo DADDY ...i tell u wazzzzuuppp bby girl

  • @jn6verse51 fonny

  • Its funny how this has nothing to do with BMW.. =P

  • @Fiskarfred SOON...

  • @schenkel123 What?

  • Je pense que ce sculpteur s'est inspiré du savoir des anciens . exemple :Héron d'Alexandrie (1er sciècle apJC) avait inventé des machines et des automatismes.

I think the sculptor was inspired by the knowledge of the ancients. example: Heron of Alexandria (first sciècle) had invented machines and automation.

  • The automata in the Hellenistic world were intended as f.e. tools for demonstrating basic scientific principles, including those built by Greek mathematician Hero of Alexandria (sometimes known as Heron). When his writings on hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanics were translated into Latin in the sixteenth century, Hero’s readers initiated reconstruction of his machines, which included siphons, a fire engine, a water organ, the aeolipile, and a programmable cart "

  • " Ancient Discoveries: Ancient Robots "

" In this scintillating programme, we delve into the mysteries of ancient robots. The ancient world is littered with more references to automatic robotic machines than you might think...

    GOOGLE: disclose.tv Ancient_Robots_Pt_1_5

  • ...The mythical golden robot built by Hephaistos was fabled to roam the island of Crete three times a day, protecting its wealth. Its name was Talos, and it was famously depicted in the 1960s film Jason and the Argonauts. The gods were also supposed to have been surrounded by self moving tripods, doors which opened with acoustical signals and anthropomorphic robots...

  • ...

We ask if there is any truth in the amazing and sensational idea that the ancients had robotic devices. We examine the robotic inventions found in the texts of Homer, and compare them with machines known in the ancient world...

  • In antiquity, Heron and Philon were the undisputed champions of robotic invention. We look at three of Philon’s most important automata inventions: the drinking horse machine, the automatic mechanism for supplying water and the automatic serving girl. Philon was working in the third century BC. We ask how he was able to create such marvels over 2000 years ago

    GOOGLE: disclose.tv Ancient_Robots_Pt_1_5

  • ... We also look at automatic devices masterminded by Heron of Alexandria, such as robotic temple doors and the self-automated theatre. We also scrutinise the Hydraulis, an automatic water organ which was the favoured musical instrument of Emperor Nero. In an amazing discovery in Dion at the foot of Mount Olympia in Greece, the remains of a Hydraulis were found in 1992

    GOOGLE: disclose.tv Ancient_Robots_Pt_1_5

  • There is 2700 year old stories of Greek metal robots. Pneumatics are Greek invention or earlier from Mesopotamian's world first science university.

  • AMAZING

  • ಠ_ಠ WOAHHH. incredible

  • fantastico ,

  • modern day , or more precisely non fictional Gepetto.

  • awesomeness

  • eat your heart out banksy

  • What does have to do with BMW?

  • Anyone felt awesome watching after watching this video?

  • so awesome!

  • You made me cry.Wonderful!!!!

  • Genius !

  • He uses space age materials and designs them with the aid of genetic algorithms run on computers, let's no go crazy and talk about olden times here.

  • If mankind get extinct and some extraterrestial archeologists find the earth, it would be great for mankind to them to find jansen's ''creatures''.

  • jaw-dropping!

  • Incredible, eerie, and beautiful!

  • BMW? CMON

  • forget about Greek, this is One Man ...for the asses that built cars and electric crap , we forgot that nature has a beauty of self "Energy" and we could have turned the right direction not using oil . His mind gave us a sight of good engineering for the "Mind" to thing of mobility of materials withing nature . Not some fat ass using it to go and get burgers.

  • @Donatillo1961 electricity is natural, so is oil, it's the application that is abused

  • @Donatillo1961 Ever since oil was discovered, wind power, solar power, and somewhat water power, were all left at the wayside. We still have all these renewable resources at hand and readily available to us. I can't understand how we're all at the mercy of the very few who control the oil resources of the world! WE, the PEOPLE, can make a difference, but we have to make a stand

  • wow... artist ! indeed !

  • Wow, I have never thought of anything like this before!

  • you can see these things out on beaches today.

  • Instead of wind, let's put some solar panels there and a motor, then expert it to third world countries so they can use that instead of a donkey. Better yet, make a camel version of it for the desert.

  • @H8H8er

Maybe if that was profitable somehow..

  • @H8H8er

Sadly though awesome theyre not the most efficient design. (what theo doesnt show is the incredible amount of design, and material research he had to do in order to create such machines. not to mention their upkeep and cost) A solar powered "wagon" with 4 wooden wheels a simple family car starter motor and a 1mx1m solar panel would do most African families fine (i built such a device myself for traveling around ze farm)

  • SOMEONE KNOWS HOW CAN I DO THAT? OR DO U KNOW A PLACE, I CAN FIND OUT IT? PLEASE! I NEED IT FOR DE UNIVERCITY FOR A PROJECT

  • @niania547 still need it? i have alot of info on the technology behind it.

  • In all traditions, Spirit means breath or wind:

Our word Spirit is derived from the Latin Spiritus, which means breath. For the Greeks, the Spirit is known as Pneuma, a term which also means breath. The Hebrew word Ruah is synonymous with wind. Yahweh is derived from the root HWY, which also means wind.

  • Proud to be dutch lol

  • Words can't explain how magnificent it is, maybe this will be a leap to the future, when transportation only needs wind to move...

  • @yazpaul You mean like sailboats? :P

  • @RyuuHatake maybe but on land, a sail car lol.....

  • @yazpaul Sadly I don't think those would travel very far in many places on Earth, but it's still a rather interesting idea

  • Beautiful.

    This man is a genius.

  • very good..

  • It's an amazing piece of engineering, but at time 0.13 I see a group of soda bottles

and plastic tubing, leading me to believe they are powered pneumatically, not really

"by the wind" as stated. They work too smoothly to be only wind powered.

  • @jimtomatola I made a pneumatic arm when I was in grade 8, all i needed to move it was to just pull in and out some syringes... if he can make those syringes move by themselves with the wind, somehow, then it's still considered wind-powered, but structurally it is pneumatic

  • I want more of this and a large picture for my wall.

  • I think some deep part of me that's scared of spiders is causing me to feel disturbed by these things.

  • Unbelieveble work, this guy is genious! but why put him together with BMW?

  • kickass man je bent echt heel goed bezig theo!

  • Does he work for BMW? no -.-

  • Hi Theo, this is unbeliaveble! Your creativity is really a rupture with the conventional and a a passport to the sustainability mindset. my best regards, Ariel de Sousa - Telco engineer from Brazil

  • theo jansen is a dutch soccer player from ajax lol

  • Maybe Theo Jansen is a human being of flesh and bones and needs shelter and food which is not free. Maybe BMW paid him a few euros so he could build a few more of these gorgeous gizmos instead, or in addition to, chase the necessities of life? It's important to keep the free minds alive.

  • What the hell does BMW have to do with Jansen's Kinetic Sculptures?

  • i want to ride it but take away the mini gun.

  • This could've been built in ancient greek times. My god.

  • @EnigmaNovb yep thats holland :D

  • @EnigmaNovb If only the greeks would of realized the possibility of it. We would be so far now.

  • @EnigmaNovb

I bet if they built those and used them in war, they would have instantly won.

  • @EnigmaNovb umm they could have build iPad too.. materials haven't changed much

  • @Electroposit I think you'll find materials have changed a hell of a lot. I might be wrong but I don't think the Ancient Greeks had plastics.

  • @sitjar they could have made one, thats my point, like with this, they could. but didnt

  • @Electroposit if the Greeks could have made one but didn't, then so could any other early homosapien....but didn't.

It's only since the industrial revolution that people started understanding mechanisms to the degree they do today and I doubt this would be possible using wood. Plastic is horrible stuff but it's opened up a completely new world, hence Theo Jansen's sculptures and the trillion other creations using the stuff.

  • I've never had such a dual feeling of horror and mesmerism in my life. Still, I want one! I'd use it instead of a car just to freak people out... including myself.

  • This is the future.

  • the man is a genious and I have a lot of respect for him, bmw ate either using him for their marketing or they are genuinely using his talents as a creative engineer....

who do you think may replace him when he is no more?

  • why isn't this bloke at Nassa?

  • WHY BMW???!!!!!

  • OMG this is beautiful!!!

  • i do have to admit that when i see his creations i get a tad fearful.

  • I would crap my pants if I see one of these things walking towards me.

  • Comment removed

  • @JulianGaviriaDotNet lets hope its solid & doesn't splat all over your pants, guess it depends on your diet.. Looks like Theo is taking your problem into consideration at 0:18

  • Im Intrst 2 Join.

  • Great video and work.. I like this artist too:

  • Such a wonderful sculptures is a very sensitive artist , who made sculptures what supose to be inmovil , inanimated but he made for live with the wind. that is marvelous.

    best regards from mexico

  • Whats wrong with BMW? They make amazing vehicles.

  • omg this is amaizing

  • will it blend ?

  • this is the most amazing thing i hav ever seen wene do you show them?

  • yea..but can it make french fries?

  • walks into the ocean, movie over

  • Does anyone perhaps know if similar instruments are available for purchase (certainly on a smaller scale, I'd assume)? We live in the U.S., and are fascinated by this video (plus there is a birthday coming up). Many thanks!

  • @chettmansberger Nope & why should a American have one? When you's steal everything off other proud countries that earn their success from there inventions & creation of such many things. Its very sad to see a nice country like the USA steal so many machines that were inevent by other countries.

  • @GayBoyRunning true that but other countries should pick up their game and move forward. America hardly has any competition these days so they rake in all the dough.

  • @webmastertool Why america doesnt have any competition with any other countries because they like beening on top of everything else with there stealing & greedy habits. The USA is nothing but a Greedy Selfish Inconsiderate country.

  • @GayBoyRunning Like i said before, more of a reason for other countries to up their game. if someone is beating you you don't site there and take it. get up and innovate.

  • @webmastertool Well Australia is 5 years ahead of the USA is some types of a technology that at this time im not bothered to tell u cause its 6am in the morning & i just got up to check any thing has come by like ur comment.

  • @GayBoyRunning care to elaborate?

  • @webmastertool Well look at our Inventions & Engineering & you'll see.

  • @GayBoyRunning Ok then...take your light bulbs out and smash em. live by candle...the light bulb was invented in america. oh...and your phone too since the telephone was an american invention. As well as many many other things that everyone all over the world uses every day of their lives. It is not about who discovered what or anything about that. We should all be working for the benifit of mankind and get rid of silly notions like you have. Don't tred on me.

  • @brandishednail Haha, you've proven yourself wrong on some comments.

The light bulb, well the 1st one wasn't invention by a American but by a British gentleman by the name Humphry Davy back in the 1800's tho it was the 1st light. But another British gentleman invented a long lasting light in (1878) that was far more brighter & mostly used in light houses.

    (continue in next comment) -

  • @brandishednail - Well you were kinda right about the telephone, tho I guess you didn't know about Elisha Gray that was working beside the Scottish gentleman Alexander Graham Bell.

Changing the subject. I know some one who invented 1st flight befor the Wright Brothers did. Guess who.

Did you know the British invented alot of machines that people today can not live with nor get to places by. I could name you some next time if you like?

  • @GayBoyRunning ok...but my point is that invention should be shared with the world. it is about the betterment of the human race. I could care less who invented what or what country is was done in. If you want to hate on america then fine. we do have our short comings. But the british aren't perfect either. to much is put on where you come from and not enough put onto who you are. You may see Brittish, American, African, and so on but I see human.

  • @chettmansberger

My goodness, what anger you have. I was mearly asking an innocent question, not representing, nor speaking for the entire marketing world. Sorry to have offended you.

Oh, and P.S... if you're going to insult anyone in the English speaking world, perhaps you should learn the languge first. It will assist you greatly in getting your point across by written word.

  • The guy is off his head, sure, he can make things move but how does he expect them to live? Ridiculous.

  • @SoooBlue it's art. And science. Don't be so stupid and open your eyes.

  • @hck112 What, so you're saying that these things have the ability to live?

  • @hck112 Think for a second, it's a metaphor to "real" living things. These mechanic engines are "alive" because they can move independently with nature supplies, like a "real" living creature; have a brain to measure the steps and winds (see more of his documentaries) or sensor to "guide" them toward the wind directions.

As a metaphor for these lifeless things Theo Jansen means they can think, move and sense on their own; just like living creatures do to survive.

  • I wish he would make ones that go in circles and leave them lying around in deserts for people to find and shit because they would go forever.

  • That guy's awesome. BMW sucks.

  • I'm guessing these sculptures don't have the constant maintenence and repair of BMW cars?

  • @jandm9002 BMW.. what are you comparing them to? I mean, Honda cars are great cars, almost never need repairs, and have an extremely long life. But BMW's are better than Hondas....

  • @AdamSavage88 Hey there, I wasn't comparing them to anything. The maintenece price for them is high.

  • @jandm9002 Yea... One of my friends had a porsche. And when he had to change the spark plug he had to crank the engine out of the car, and flip it over to change it. But i think that is just a generalization of german cars.

  • @AdamSavage88 Wow, I believe it. BMW is now making their brake rotors out of a softer metal compound. Their PR spin on it is so that it improves braking. Funny how it now enables them to charge you for changing the rotors as well as the pads every time they go for a brake job. I compare BMW's to Harleys. They are a statement and people like what they say. Might not be the greatest product but they have an image that people will pay for.

  • @jandm9002 Those kind if cars are made to go fast and be race cars though. So when you buy a bmw or a porsche you are buying a potential race car, so the components enable it to be a better race car. But if you go to VW, it is made more for luxury. And race components are not necessarily made to last.

  • @AdamSavage88 an excellent point. Unfortunatley I think only a small percentage of the buyers appreciate the potential.

  • I think this is really cool. Great engineering, and artfulness. It is really important to remember why art funds are so critically important to all of us.

Now for the posters............... dialogue,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I had to scroll down,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what are people thinking (or not) on one page exists stupidity, thoughfulness, ignorance, brilliance,,,,,,,,,,victims of marketings power and vulgar displays of ineptitude.........I suppose thats why DARWIN Rules prevail.

  • Make the AT-AT!

  • genius man!

    ...bmw ?! seriously ?? -__-

  • "Only inventors can never design"

  • thats fuckin cool

  • Shit, i'm dutch but i never heard off this guy. This is amazing!

  • Fuck BMW.

  • so sad that this video ends with a BMW logo.

  • @citizenjlk I'm with you on that.

  • @citizenjlk I think he's an engineer for BMW... Maybe they sponsered this? I don't think that's too sad if it's the case.

  • @citizenjlk someones has to fund it.

  • @Mralec007 Yes your right and BMW's money has made this great video possible. I still find it sad however because ultimately the logo tells us that this is an insidious advert promoting a mega-corporate message.

  • @citizenjlk What he made is actually real dumbass =.=

  • @Deady4u When did I say it wasn't real? Learn to read dumbass.

  • @citizenjlk sadly, these sculptures cannot be built without funds and since society is amazed but offers no real help, this is probably his only way.

  • i wonder how he got those on the beach

  • You are a very special man! Thanks for sharing your vision!

  • Ben een liefhebber van deze bijzondere kunstenaar, wat een eigenwijs werk supertof!!!

  • doesn't surprise me that BMW are backing such a pretentious and useless idea. never seen anything so 'up-your-own-arse' in my life. 'kinetic sculptor' indeed. stop scribbling silly drawings and get a real job, make a proper contribution to the 'real' world if you really are that talented.

  • @torino390 lmao, you are an idiot! art contributes moe to the world then people like you can understand. You are one of those people who is so locked in their bubble that you hate anything that's not 'your life'. Kinetic sculpture describes this perfectly, considering it is a sculpture powered by kinetic energy...so how is that pretentious!? Also, what is incredible about this is that it could make it's way into mainstream engineering in ways you cant imagine.

  • @ribenawrath art? art? you'd buy anything wouldn't you? it's art because someone says so right? i'd also bet you believe so-called designer clothes are far superior to supermarket clothes, and the most expensive coffee tastes the best, and that BMW badge sets you aside from the rest of the 'normal' people... etc etc. step back, take a look. this has nothing to do with art or sculpture or anything really. but you'll buy into it, because you're shallow, materialistic, and really quite sad.
