I vidily remember watching the final episode. Especially that last scene when Carol comes back in and says bye to the house.
Unreal how it really felt like losing a member of the family, and feeling that void. Shows today are more edgy, dark, real, but totally lack heart that is remembered far after they're gone like many great shows from the past .
Can I get this version on iTunes? I love this version...I remember singing along along with it when I was a kid (doing all the accapella parts of course). I miss all the theme songs/music from the 70's & 80's. Bring them back!!
So sad that today's shows don't have a real opening to them...To be honest, I do LOVE Modern Family, but I can watch in one time, & I'm done...I don't watch repeats, no saved recordings...I would LOVE to have Growing Pains on somewhere where I can watch all the shows from the start, (without no DVD version...Like back in the day when they came out) cause you never grow tired of these repeats ;)
Too bad tv shows don't theme songs like this anymore. Golden Girls, Cosby, Seinfeld, Cheers, Full House and of course Growing Pains. These shows all had TRUE theme songs.
@JordanDryceSchultz Its actually done by a group called Rockapella (you might remember them from Where In the World is Carmen...) and was released as an IMPORT single (too many legalities to be released in the states). I SERIOUSLY doubt you can buy the cd anymore, but it was released in Japan. I have a copy, but I still listen to it. If Rockapella ever releases a b-sides or a box set, you might be able to get it on there, but the cd had this, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and another song. Good luck.
@ariasha45 You are incorrect. Rockapella definitely did NOT sing this version. I'm a huuuuge Rockapella fan. People always assume it's them because of their popularity in 1992. It was not them, and it was not Take 6, as others also assume. I'm searching for the group. The end credits of that season might say, but I can't find it yet.

this would make a great song for a wedding! I am so proud of the man that Kirk Cameron grew up to be, so honorable and respectable- how many role models today can u say that about!
I AGREE!! The other versions were great too, but this one really has it's place at #1...I can't think of one show out there today that has a great beginning like this! Nothing is family-related anymore either!
@gjhalani yeah they've missed the best yrs of family sitcomes.. and the theme songs were all good.. including this one! now we have shows are too simliar like Gossip Girl, etc.... it's not the same. I think 7th Heaven was the last family shows that brings back the memories of these shows.. after that.. its not the same.
@gjhalani they will because time has ended, didn't you know? all culture & media was current once high speed internet became available. You think the "kids" are watching TV?
I just love this theme song and it describes the show so perfectly. lol It's all about family who sticks together and uses that to get through things. And the a capella version is so beautiful. With this version and what it's saying about the show almost brings me to tears. They did really good with this. :)
I just typed the same thing on another message board! Kids today don't know what we had when we were growing up...Now it's all internet, & iphones for kids...Such a shame!
There has been alot of speculation in regards to who actually performed this song and although the good folks @ wikipedia claim that it is "Rockapella", I can assure you it is not. I would have to think that for as many voices that can be heard, it must be a relatively large group of session or backup singers all assembled for this acapella version. It certainly sounds good though doesn't it? Life was so much easier back then.
@cagekicker18 Whoever is singing sounds to me like *maybe* two men singing the entire thing with 8-12 voice overdubbing. Listen to this again, and then look up a Carpenters (Karen & Ricahrd) accapella recording (Without a song is a major one) and then compare the two. I am thinking Overdubbing here and it sounds GORGEOUS.
@Chromyne Ahhh, yes Wikipedia. The world's greatest source of questionable information. Wikipedia can be and often is, an information outlet that is subject to personal beliefs, rumors and innuendo. Just because someone decided to enter info that they THINK is true doesn't make it fact. Although there is a small fragment of useful and concise information contained on the Wikipedia web page, that information can be edited, twisted and manipulated. Ha ha!
@happy543210 I don't know why, but it happens all the time. My dad was born blonde and now his hair is almost black (well gray now). I was a few shades lighter as a child as well.
I remember hearing this theme for the first time and thinking how awesome the harmony was! It really makes me sad to think that music nowadays relies so much on technology, especially singing, that we will probably never hear vocals that sound this smooth and harmonious. If you want harmony, just hit a button, your voice will be replicated 5 times in whatever key your singing in, Sang a little flat? let antares autotune fix it for you? Don't worry about the effort of singing well!

the only reason i signed on youtube was this song, gosh, it brings a lot of great memories n tears (T_T) (why nobody makes this kind of songs nowadays?). i'm 29 and a father too, wish my eight months daughter could watch this someday.....
Probably cause we hate the crap that is out on tv now.....and are very nostalgic about our younger years....when music and tv/film was much much BETTER
It was great when Nick at Nite started showing Growing Pains then it sucked when they took it off and out of their line up. Not sure why they did that. This is a great show!

Wait, what generation are 30 year olds who watched this show as kids? I'm not a gen X, is it Gen Y? Anywho, I loved this show, all these 80's tv shows, they taught morals, they taught personality, they taught good manners, and were funny. Honestly, this type of sitcom needs to come back. Our kids deserve it. Wow I'm so preachy, somebody slap me!
when i heard this when this aired.. omg i loveeeeeed it.. They used to switch it back and forth.. so on some days we'd hear the acappella and on some days it's the regular tune. Ahh man i love this show.. :)
Rumor has it that Alan Thicke and some other guys did this a capella... ( you can kinda hear Alan's voice) perhaps Jeremy Miller and Kirk? ( NOT Capt. James T.!! :-P)
I had a HUGE crush on Kirk Cameron back then! Growing Pains Rocked! A true family show for everyone! But seriously, I hate to get all sentimental and all, but it's shows like these that brought families together back in the 80's & 90's! At least when shows like Growing Pains, Family Ties, Cosby Show, ect came on, parents knew where their kids were. I think if the TV industry whould go back to shows like these, families whould be a lot closer.
I hear ya. I'm going to be 30 next year, and I can't believe it. For some reason, I've been listening to these old 80s theme songs, from shows that I loved as a kid. This a capella Growing Pains theme was one of my favorites. I think Growing Pains was wrongly categorized as just a dumb kids' show. Maybe it was in the beginning, but the later episodes were really witty and clever.
I'll be 31 in a couple of months, and can't believe how fast it's all gone by. It's seems like just a few years ago I was watching stuff like this weekly (or even daily with evening re-runs) but it's really been a deceade and a half.
i love this version of the theme song. alan thicke is truly a handsome man. this song gives me chills, it's sung so beautifully. my intern and i have been listening to it non-stop all day. We have been inspired to create our own acapella group, and will work as hard as we can to create a television show theme song to be heard by millions some day.
Along with several other flubs, I am now convinced this theme song, too serious and somber for a sitcom, is one reason the show tanked in its later days. That and the fact that the kids just grew up a little too far when all was said and done.
Then again, if Mike had become a daddy then you could have continued the show into a new generation of Seavers...
Is just me or did they change Ben Seaver's character, a male version of Carol (more like her season 1 character a geek with brains) and gave the ultra cool hip character to Leonardo DiCaprio when played Luke in the last season. And when Cameron decided to chose Faith. Miller could of been the Teen Idol up there with Leo, (if memory serves me right) The show could of last...If Gold wasn't sick, and Cameron a Religion freak, (dont mix faith with work) other wise you commit career suicide
No, it was just puberty for Jeremy Miller. His name actually became a byword for kids who get uglier as they mature.
BTW, I wonder why they used the same set of opening photos in the 7th season that they did in the 6th? By the end of the 7th season those pictures of Jeremy, Ashley and Leo were almost 2 years old, which is awfully obsolete for kids and teens.
These dudes need to go on American idol. This song fucking rocks!

Idoljunky32: You are SO right! I couldn't agree with you more. It seems that you can't watch anything with your family nowadays! :(

Maybe it was in the beginning, but the later episodes were really witty and clever.

im in the same 30s boat with you. And its hard for me to watch things like this from when I was a kid.

Never liked this version of the theme..sounded too serious
mooky9669 3 years ago
I think they used this version to wind down the show in the last season so, yeah it's more dramatic, but I like it.

wonderful!!! my childhood...even in germany... and this song.. memories... :)

this show was perfect as far as a sitcom is concerned. the song is genius for its short length
cocoyoyo01 3 years ago 2
Along with several other flubs, I am now convinced this theme song, too serious and somber for a sitcom, is one reason the show tanked in its later days. That and the fact that the kids just grew up a little too far when all was said and done.
Then again, if Mike had become a daddy then you could have continued the show into a new generation of Seavers...
ComradeSephiroth 3 years ago
Is just me or did they change Ben Seaver's character, a male version of Carol (more like her season 1 character a geek with brains) and gave the ultra cool hip character to Leonardo DiCaprio when played Luke in the last season. And when Cameron decided to chose Faith. Miller could of been the Teen Idol up there with Leo, (if memory serves me right) The show could of last...If Gold wasn't sick, and Cameron a Religion freak, (dont mix faith with work) other wise you commit career suicide
Keepitgreasy11 3 years ago
No, it was just puberty for Jeremy Miller. His name actually became a byword for kids who get uglier as they mature.
BTW, I wonder why they used the same set of opening photos in the 7th season that they did in the 6th? By the end of the 7th season those pictures of Jeremy, Ashley and Leo were almost 2 years old, which is awfully obsolete for kids and teens.
