It was Officer Crowley who "misstated" in his report that she identified "two black men with backpacks" when in fact the tape of her call confirms that she didn't say anything about "blacks," that she said "suitcases" not "backpacks" and that she said maybe the guys weren't breaking in at all, but might actually live there. Officer Crowley took it from there.
Crowley's report was the first thing made public, and he obviously "misstated" the facts.
This press conference shows, first of all, that you have to be your own advocate these days.
My opinion is, Crowley should have acted like an adult and defused the situation by NOT cuffing Gates and chalked it up to routine misunderstanding. Obviously Crowley didn't know how to handle a situation whereby everyone could step back with their dignity intact.
& give Gates a break. When's the last time you got back from China, jet-lagged? It can be a thirty hour ordeal with no sleep.

Professor Gates didn't cause her anything. It was Officer Crowley who "misstated" in his report that she identified "two black men with backpacks" when in fact the tape of her call confirms that she didn't say anything about "blacks," that she said "suitcases" not "backpacks" and that she said maybe the guys weren't breaking in at all, but might actually live there. Officer Crowley took it from there.
Crowley's report was the first thing made public, and he obviously "misstated" the facts.

This press conference shows, first of all, that you have to be your own advocate these days.
My opinion is, Crowley should have acted like an adult and defused the situation by NOT cuffing Gates and chalked it up to routine misunderstanding. Obviously Crowley didn't know how to handle a situation whereby everyone could step back with their dignity intact.
& give Gates a break. When's the last time you got back from China, jet-lagged? It can be a thirty hour ordeal with no sleep.

Ms. Whalen appears to be a troubled person. Obviously she was reading a script, too bad she couldn't speak from the heart. Scarce American dollars are being squandered on this foolish case.
Hopefully Dr. Gates and Sgt. Crowley resolve any differences and have a great time at the White House tomorrow.
All Americans should view this matter as a learning experience and move forward.

Police have a history of fabricating events in their reports. It has happened yet again.

It is the Cambridge cop who should be blamed for the mistake in his report. The report clearly states that the caller spoke to him and used the so called racist words at the residence of Gates.

But. H.L.G. is far too "emininent and distinguished" a black studies scholar (& buddy of big time politicos) to apologize to one of the "unimportant little people"!

Why should Gates apologize? Everyone, the media included, took Crowley at his word when he said two "black" males with "backpacks" were reported "breaking into" the house. In fact, the 9-11 tape shows she didn't say anything about black men, she said suitcases not backpacks, and she even says maybe these guys live there and are having trouble with the keys.
It was the officer who obviously misinterpreted/botched what was happening.
And Gates is indeed eminent and distinguished.

We've no reason to think the police dispatcher relayed the 911 call WORD FOR WORD to the police on the scene (now do we!).
We weren't privy to any conversation between the cops & this lady on the scene (now were we!).
Gates' bad attitude and harrasement / tantrum directed at the police (engaged in a legitimate investigation of a possible B&E) resulted in his arrest.
Gates was the one cursing the cops (listen to the back ground "music").
Gates' reputation IS somewhat diminished!

"The lady," last I heard , denies she ever talked to Crowley.
If the dispatcher relayed it incorrectly, then it's police error. If Crowley "misheard" it, then it's his error. In any event, AFTER Crowley established Gates was there legally, he said "Keep the cars coming." Coming for what? To handle an old man with a cane? Great use of police resources!
If Gates wants to yell in his own home, that's his right. They ban people yelling in their homes in Iran. Not in the USA.

Yeah now that I watch it again, the only time I heard anything was at 1:07 when she said "figyad". And, most of the time, when Bostonians try to hold back their accents, they still have elongated vowels, like saying "lawt" instead of "lot".
